Although "9 Secrets of Successful Meditation" offers many interesting and useful psychological, philosophical, religious, and cultural concepts, it offers very little practical information about how the beginner can actually practice meditation. In fact, it is not until the Appendices on page 169 of a 184-page book that we encounter "Techniques of Meditation."

So if you are interested in learning how to meditate, this book, in my opnion, is not for you.

Great Practical Book on Meditation

When I started reading this book by Yogi Dr. Samprasad Vinod, I continued reading it till end. It is full of interesting stories, anecdotes, practical guidelines that are useful for beginners as well as advanced meditators. The language is simple and lucid. Important thing is it is written by an experienced yogi who has a rich family tradition of yoga running in the family. The author is himself a medical doctor. He is the world acclaimed authority on yoga and meditation. His preface From the Mindshore is very interesting and gives an idea of his transparency and sincerity. It is appreciated by luminaries from the field like Howard Kent from UK and Dr. David Frawley from USA.

Jim Newheiser: MA, DMin, Westminster Theological Seminary. Jim has been practicing biblical counseling for over 20 years is an ACBC Fellow and has served as the director of IBCD since 2006. He has been a pastor at Grace Bible Church in Escondido, CA since 1990. Many of GBC's former interns are serving as missionaries, seminary professors and pastors. Jim is a founding member and Executive Board member of the Fellowship of Independent Reformed Evangelicals. He is an international retreat and conference speaker. About the Author

Iwao Hirose is Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department and the School of Environment, McGill University. He is the author of Moral Aggregation (OUP, 2014), Egalitarianism (2014), and The Ethics of Health Care Rationing (with Greg Bognar, 2014). He is also editor of Weighing and Reasoning (with Andrew Reisner, forthcoming from OUP).

Jonas Olson is Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at Stockholm University. Before coming to Stockholm, he was for three years a Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford. He works mainly on value theory, metaethics, and the history of moral philosophy, and he has published articles in journals like Mind, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Philosophical Quarterly, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, and Utilitas.

This is a worthy reference volume that would improve a scholar's library

Oxford University Press recently released another entry into their series of Oxford Handbooks, this time the topic is value theory. Like most of their handbooks, The Oxford Handbook of Value Theory is designed to be a mid- to upper-level reference volume and not an introduction, at least not an introduction to someone without some background in philosophy.

Value theory is a key concept for all of ethics. How do we determine what is of value, especially what is of ultimate value? How do we evaluate between two things that are each good? Where does value come from?

The twenty-two new essays in this volume are a worthy attempt at bringing some clarity to an otherwise exceedingly complex portion of philosophy. Indeed, I found that though some of the essays challenged me with symbolic logic and dense philosophical prose, my understanding of contemporary value discussions was improved significantly.

After a brief introductory chapter by the editors, Iwao Hirose and Jonas Olson, the book is divided into three sections. The first is on foundations. In ten chapters, authors provide overviews of the differences between evaluative and deontic value (quality versus morality), intrinsic and extrinsic value, value and emotion, and more. These first tend essays tend to be simpler and clearer for the relatively uniformed. The second section deals with the structure of value theory. There are important definitions of incomparability and incommensurability, a discussion of ranking different value structures, and an evaluation of theories of value aggregation. The six essays in this section are more focused and philosophically dense, but they inform the reader of important arguments in the field of value theory. The final section includes six chapters that apply the earlier concepts. How will health be valued? What is freedom worth? Can we assign value to nature? The practical orientation of these chapters relies on the framework provided in the earlier discussions, but rounds out the volume to show why the whole discussion matters.

The essays tend to be basic and informative, which is to say they are not strongly polemical. The authors are trying to explain the field more than sway the reader toward one system or another. This is an essential characteristic of a handbook like this.

This is a not a book for the faint of heart. Indeed, it is a reference book that will best serve individuals with some background in philosophy to improve their grasp of the field. In reality, the world would be better served if more people understood value theory more thoroughly and were able to differentiate between aesthetic goodness and moral duties, or, in some cases, see value in aesthetics at all.

Ethicists and moral philosophers should begin petitioning their librarians to get a copy of this book in their collections. It is the best entry into the depths of value theory that I have found, and I have looked before. Reading this volume has been enormously helpful in my understanding of discussions in environmental ethics, which I hope will pay dividends in the future.

I like the book and some of the things in it. I have been practicing for a long time. I don't believe that you must take ritual bath for every spell. Who did the spell check in this book. Quite a few typos.

Another Book where Neo-Wicca is equated with witchcraft...

I was hopeful when I picked up this book. The cover made it seem that this was not going to be another book filled with Neo-Wiccan teachings about love and light and was actually going to be a book on witchcraft. However, I was sorely mistaken. From the very introduction of this book, Witchcraft is defined as Wiccan and using Wiccan principles. It is defined as having one be closely connected with nature and harmony and loving the Earth. Not all witches are interested in that or even connect with nature at all. It begins with dismissing Satanism as false as well as contrasting its definition of witchcraft with the Abrahamic faiths. There are plenty of Abrahamic witches out there thank you very much. It also provides false history about Wicca, insinuating that it is an ancient religion when in fact it has only existed since the 1950s. The book also mentions the rule of three, another Wiccan only concept. The partial Wiccan Rede is also brought up. It continues as such for the rest of the book.
In short, skip this book. It is filled with historic misinformation. It is another book that equates Wicca and witchcraft and shoves the Neo-Wiccan concepts down your throat. It feels like a Silver Ravenwolf book and that should be enough to make you close the cover and never open it again.
