He clearly has an honest desire to see the American Church move in a direction that is motivated more by love and less by fear

While "No Fear In Love" is not the book I was anticipating it to be, it is nonetheless a book that many people will find appealing for a number of reasons. The author shares a number of interesting, personal stories showing a glimpse into his life and insight into how his convictions have developed. He clearly has an honest desire to see the American Church move in a direction that is motivated more by love and less by fear. Braner has come to diagnose some of the symptoms of what ails the church as a disease called fear - fear of change, fear of others, fear of many things. His conclusion is that fear should be replaced by love. Many will probably find strength not only in his assessment of the problems facing the church, but with his proposed solutions. I, however, find the book to be disapointingly naieve and unhelpful on both counts.

While, I do not wish to point out all of the ways in which I disagree with the author, it would be helpful to share one example that comes early in the book and sets the tone for the chapters that follow. In chapter two, Braner brings into question the need to "protect the gospel" and what he views as the doubtful motives of those who wish to do so. In this section he starts with a confused understanding of what it might mean to protect the gospel, moves on to a false dichotomy pitting the two ideas (which are in no way antagonistic towards one another) of protecting the gospel and loving others against each other, and finishes with a good deal of smug condecension. Let me explain.

Protecting the gospel
The author would have you and I believe that because God himself needs no protecting, the same is true of the gospel. He asserts it without defense and without seeming realization of the missing logical connection. He misses the point that the gospel, the message of good news that is THE only hope for eternal life, has been something the messengers have defended going back to the writings of the Apostle Paul. One familiar with the New Testament need only hear the words "You foolish Galatians" to begin to recall Paul's defence of the gospel against those who would change it. There simply is no doubt that Christians are tasked with keeping the message of the gospel pure. However, there is also no need to confuse the defence of the gospel with an attempt to protect God from some sort of attack.

A False Dichotomy
Within the same pages, Braner moves quickly into setting up a false dichotomy. He wants you to believe that protecting the gospel is diametrically opposed to the idea of loving people. The author starts from what may be a good intention, but does so blindly. You see, he wants us to believe that it is inherently unloving (or at best immature) to attempt to win someone over with the gospel (which seems to be his actual understanding of what it means to protect the gospel). While the perception may be right, that some Christians go at evangelism with an "us vs. them" mentality, seeking to conquer opponents - this does not negate the biblical mandate to be the bearers of the Good News. After all, "How beautiful are the feet." Braners strongest attempt to disabuse us of the notion that we should protect the gospel is a mishmash of historical critique of Martin Luther and others who stood behind some unloving acts. This is akin to saying, "he did it wrong, so nobody can do it right."

Smugness
One note that repeats throughout shows some immaturity and unpreparedness for this platform is that of the authors smugness or condecension. For example he says, "I must admit, I find people in faith circles who fear extremely interesting". And a page later, "So when I meet someone who is fearful and finds the need to 'protect the gospel,' I wonder what God do you actually serve?" There are other examples, but these two will suffice. If you read them in context the condecension will likely seem even stronger to you. The author's attitude towards those whom he believes are motivated by fear is not something that will win many over.

To the author, the doubtful motive is always "fear". He assumes it of others while projecting his one time (though no longer present) fearful disposition on to all within the Church whose actions he cannot reconcile with his view of love. Braner's view of love occasionally touches on truth, though only partial truth. He rightly encourages Christians to build relationships with people outside the faith that doesn't depend on their conversion. He is wise to encourage believers to listen to nonchristians, and not just talk at them. However, all of this falls short of love if we follow his path of unwillingness to tell the gospel to those same people with the desire to see them become new creations in Christ. Yes, it is God alone who brings about new life, but his chosen tool to accomplish this is the humble servant who speaks the Good News.

Loving over fearing is a good thing, but this book isn't for everyone.

Andy Braner grew up in a conservative, fundamentalist church and it seems that his adult journey has been spent trying to overcome its effect on him. He realized that he had spent a lot of time getting to know about God rather than actually trying to know God and let him influence the way that he lived. As he unpacked his own experiences and why he was taught to respond to certain things in certain ways, he realized that much of the response that he had been taught was governed and fueled by fear.

Braner writes, “We are far too concerned with the outward appearances of daily life without really addressing the core fears brewing deep inside ourselves.” Instead of questioning and spending time in relationship with those with whom we disagree, he says, we attack. We don’t build relationships but build walls instead. He asks his reader to ponder what might happen if Christians began to look at people as people and relationships rather than battles to be won or arguments in which to triumph.

Somewhere along the way, Braner claims, Christians excelled in becoming defenders of the Gospel and of God rather than becoming examples of Christ to the world. In these efforts to protect God and the Gospel, we have actually created places where sin is prohibited and managed to such an extent that people can’t be open and honest with their struggle and where they can’t confess to one another because of the fear that’s driving them. God is not a sales pitch, Braner adds.

In embracing a culture of protection, we have feared the “other,” anyone who is different than us. We have failed to engage them and find common places of thought as starting points. Instead, we have created walls, building them up instead of building the relationships that are so important in which God could work. Braner suggests that we enter into relationships free of agendas and with a simple desire to know the other person and where they are coming from, regardless of the differences in opinions, beliefs, and ideologies.

Throughout this book, Braner shares personal stories about how he has found success in confronting his own fears and found ways to engage the “other” in his life. He shares of praying in a mosque, of engaging a whole group of Jehovah’s Witnesses and inviting them to dinner, of boldly mixing Christian and Muslim teenagers for a week of summer camp, and other stories. He says that, “The most compelling adventures are those that happen when we recognize fear, address it, and move to a place of reliance on what God is doing in the hearts and minds of others.”

Braner questions where Christians are known more by what they are against or by what they are for. In our media-saturated culture, he sees that we have lost the art of healthy dialogue, instead tending to trade it for brief shouting matches between experts in which the winner is the one who yelled the loudest. He adds that, “This practice has done nothing to help us reach out and discuss things in a civilized disagreement. It promotes anger, yelling, and extremism.”

Overall, I didn’t walk away from this book feeling as if Braner had shared anything groundbreaking with the reader. In some ways, he dwelt heavily in generalizations to the point that he made it seem as if there are no Christians out there who are making in-roads in building relationships with those with whom they don’t see eye to eye. In fact, there were times that I felt his stories were shared more for their shock value than because the readers could actually benefit from them. If the average Christian falls into most of the generalizations which Braner lays out, chances are that they wouldn’t be impressed with his stories as much as they might be shocked and turned away.

I appreciate Braner’s heart shining throughout this book. The reader can tell that he is passionate about which he writes. He is passionate about building relationships with those with whom he doesn’t see eye to eye. If you have sought a third way, a way to engage the “other” without offending, turning off, or defeating, Braner offers his own stories as possible suggestions. If you fit into the generalizations of Christians that Braner shares, you might be better served looking elsewhere for a safer and more comfortable read. Braner doesn’t pull any punches and he does so with a purpose. While this book didn’t “wow” me, I don’t feel that it was a waste of time either.

Love Overcomes Fear

The Bible says that there is no fear in love. What does that mean? In many societies, fear is a powerful and effective tool to make people follow the rules. It can also be used in relationships to keep people in check. Unfortunately, it has a lot more negative connotations and unhelpful consequences. Worse of all is the fear that grows inside us. In this book, author and founder of Ahava Ministries, a non-profit youth ministry that teaches a Christian worldview to young people, shows us that we can love fearlessly even in the midst of disagreements. Written in three sections, the first section deals with personal encounters with fear. The second section covers the author's encounter with specific worldviews. The third section works on the wider culture at large.

In Section One, we see a personal view of fear. When we are able to love people the way God loves them, we will no longer be afraid to touch on taboo topics like abortion, homosexuality, immigration, and many other controversial topics. All it takes is a change of perspective, something that Braner learns when he starts to deal with his inner fears. He realizes that his work is not the most important thing; trials are not the most terrible; natural events are not the most disastrous; but to know God inside and to hunger for God. From his forest fire encounter, he realizes how fear can often take over the person's life and corrupts everything. Just as one is fearful of failure, there is a corresponding fear in succeeding; For example, the fear of not able to sustain that success. Going back to the biblical model of holy fear, he shows us that when we put our human frailties and anxieties in its proper place, we are better able to live free and to live without fear. Through understanding, we bridge racial and religious gaps. Through places of common thought, we know that truth can be expressed in other ways, not just ours. Just because we cannot convince others does not make our beliefs wrong. In the same light, just because others can express their religions well does not make them right either. If we are in the search for truth, there is no fear in expecting truth to show up in whatever truth forms it takes. We can learn of Jesus on how fear can be dealt with as we share in the fellowship of suffering.

Section Two extends the coverage of fear to one's relationships with other worldviews. In theological tussles with the Mormons, Scientologists, and the Jehovah Witnesses, are we more afraid of losing an argument? Or are we more afraid that we are not able to express the truth we know? Maybe we are embarrassed about our lack of knowledge about our own faith? During these times, in the spirit of God is love, we can choose to care for the person rather than to be too concerned about what people believe. In relating to Muslims, Braner has to deal with his fears of terrorism and Islamic radicalism. When at a mall in the Middle East, he cannot help but be amazed that many typical Muslim families share many things in common with non-Muslims in the West. They all want a good life, a reasonable standard of living, with similar desires for happiness. In his visit to the mosque, he experienced an excitement that begins with common ground, that both Muslims and Christians can start with common beliefs and work from there. It reminds me that very often, when we interact with people who are different from us, we tend to begin with differences rather than similarities. Why not begin with what is similar? When we are able to overcome these basic differences and to work on common grounds, we can start to build relationships by inviting each other to our homes for a meal, which plant seeds for greater harmony and understanding.

Section Three takes aim at other popular issues of fear. Some of these issues are more prevalent among teens, such as sex and abortion. Others touch on the homosexuality debates, where Braner brings up the example of Chick-fil-A, to show that one can believe in heterosexual unions without being haters of homosexuals. One illustration of how a little girl chooses to stand with her parents on the side of traditional marriage that advocates marriage between a man and a woman, and at the same time, holding up a sign that says: "Free Chicken Sandwiches For Gay Couples." While affirming one's stand on traditional marriage, one at the same time asserts acceptance of people who disagree with them. This is the area which more people need to work on to avoid the simplistic dichotomy of "we vs the rest."

Fear is nothing new, but it is prevalent. Fear has been written about before by other authors and this book may seem to be another addition to the huge library of resources. The fact is simply this; because fear is so prominent, and that it is unlikely to go away anytime soon, there is always room for one more book to help us deal with fear. This book is one of them, written for the lay person.

Fear is like cancer. It is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) threats to faith. It enters slowly; Spreads gradually; attracts aggressively all kinds attention to itself, both legitimate and illegitimate. With fear comes stress, anxiety, and all negative images that only serve to aggravate matters. Worse, it creates fear in loved ones around us too. What then shall we do? Remember this. Fear is sometimes called "False Evidence Appearing Real." Thanks to Braner, we have another resource to battle this fear.

If you and I are new to each other, let me start here: This is not how this was supposed to go! In the portrait I had long ago painted of my family, I didn’t intend to include words like “widowed single mom.” I had envisioned many more decades with my husband Robb in the complicated, beautiful life of marriage. But in the course of twelve hours, our family of four became a trio, and since that day my boys and I have been creating a new life in an upside-down world.
 
I have written this new book, which in a lot of ways is a sequel to And Life Comes Back, to answer the question so many have asked: “And then what happened—after the crisis became reality and your life began again?” I’ve leaned into honest storytelling to offer a look into the chaos and beauty of who we have become.
 
I’ll be honest, this book was harder to write because I’m living it right now—I hardly feel like an expert who has figured it out. I hope my straight-up-honest stories will give you encouragement to take the next step. And the next. And the next. 
 
Sometimes, you just have to pretend you know what you’re doing, pretend you’re brave enough, and pretend you can do this. Sometimes you just have to pretend you’re normal until the new normal finds you.

About the Author
Tricia Lott Williford’s great loves are teaching, writing, and her two young sons, Tucker and Tyler. When Tricia suddenly found herself to be a thirty-one-year-old widow with two preschoolers to raise on her own, the blog she had been writing for several years became her lifeline and her readership grew dramatically and went worldwide, resulting in her first book, And Life Comes Back. She and her sons live in Colorado.

35-year old single dude loves it

I'm a single 35-year old dude, not even sure if I'm interested in having a family, so I didn't think this book would be up my alley. But a good friend sent it to me and IT IS SO ENTERTAINING!!! The hilarity and depth and heart-warming stories kinda makes me want to have a family, but until I do it is like I get to see what it is like to have one. Her husband passed away a few years ago to a freak medical thing, and he was the more grounded one. But now a fun, creative, gregarious woman trying to raise two rambunctious boys is quite spectacle. It doesn't come easily but she handles it superbly.
Her style is really fun, clever, and deep. I find myself chuckling despite my myself on like every other page, and swallowing a knot in my throat on the others.
This is a great book for anyone who wants to see a single-parent family raised with love, empathy, discipline, and joy. Well done Tricia!

Great insights into loss of a spouse and single parenting.

I read the book after I had heard Tricia's story. I lost my wife to an accident 10 years ago when I was 52 and I remembered the times of building our family back again. Tricia tells a great story that both brings back old memories and reveals some hidden truths of that it is like to loose someone. The stories of raising her boys ring true to where I am now raising additional step sons and daughters. The book is a joy to read and I found myself with both a smile and then later with a tear as I turned the pages. Tricia is a gifted writer and great communicator.

I couldn't wait For this book to magically appear on my new Kindle since of course I pre-ordered it. But I admit I truly thought there was no way this book could match Her first one. OMG ( because that's the most fitting set of words I can come up with while in jury duty), I'm 12% into this book and cracking up!! Please just tell me you are already working on book three. I dread already the withdrawal I will feel when this one is over. I love this little family.

Omg! This woman right here knows how to pen a novel that leaves you reeling from the drama! Verlonda has done it again, I was impressed with her debut novel, but this right here shows she's the real deal. Masquerade will leave you second-guessing everything you think you know about your friends, family and significant other!

I think this is first book I have read from this author but definitely wont be the last. This story had three best friends and the different paths their lives took but in spite of their friendship didnt waver. It was full of twists and turns and just right amount of drama. On to Part 2

Scrambling onto the shoulders of a giant

It's far too soon for me to be writing this. I have no idea how this singular little book is going to alter the course of my life. I only know that it will. Some things you simply know - without analysis, without synthesis, with hardly any reflection. I feel like an explorer who has just stepped onto a new continent - my eyes can barely discern the outlines of mountains in the distant mist, yet I can already taste infinite promise in the wind.

I have never held a book like this: one that addresses all the big questions that have riveted my attention since perhaps the age of ten, and speaks to them in my own language. A book written by a man who has so obviously found the doors of perception for himself, and is able to give directions to them in words that other travelers can understand. When my wise partner reminds me that I should always leave space in my life for miracles, this book is the kind of thing she is talking about.

Part of the reason for my reaction is summed up by this paragraph from the book's introduction:

"Overall, this work is characterized by a new readiness on my part to go all out with my points of view. In my previous works, I’ve held myself back in the interest of striking a more moderate note with broader appeal. It is, however, unclear whether that was effective. What is sure is that it pruned the full expression of my views. Now, having turned 40 and witnessed my life take turns I’d never expected, I feel less motivated to compromise on my discourse. Life is just too short for that. Therefore, this book tackles, head-on, subjects I have hitherto kept out of bounds: God, ‘conspiracies,’ the obvious flaws of science as practiced today, the often insidious role of the media and a number of other polemical topics. You be the judge of whether my uncensored views still hold up to reason and the available evidence."

I'm not going to discuss specifics - as I said, it's far too early. But anyone who has followed the twists and turns of my peripatetic mind - from technology to ecology; from Peak Oil and climate change to non-equilibrium thermodynamics and evolutionary psychology; from Dawkinsian scientism to Buddhism, Taoism and Advaita; from materialism to idealism; from anger and outrage to radical acceptance and surrender - and wondered what shore I might wash up on next ... well, this appears to be it.

An explorer of life can feel no greater thrill than the discovery of new territory. Like the countless other giants along the way who have offered their shoulders as vantage points, Bernardo Kastrup gives us a perch from which we may see the lay of the land for ourselves. I can imagine no higher compliment.

His theories provide elegant answers to some of the world's greatest mysteries. As a former staunch materialist

Bernardo writes lucidly in a rational, level-headed manner that eludes so many philosophers and scientists. His theories provide elegant answers to some of the world's greatest mysteries. As a former staunch materialist, Why Materialism is Baloney helped me see through the facade and true lunacy of this untenable theory. In Brief Peeks Beyond, he elaborates on his version of idealism and adds his commentary on the state of our society and culture. I particularly love the format of this work because it lets me show essays to family and friends without having to convince them to read an entire book. My only criticism is that Bernardo seems a bit complacent -- not in the sense of what he talks about in section 8.5 regarding what we can do individually (I actually agree with him on this point that real change must start within) -- but I get the sense that he views this book as his magnum opus of sorts (I could be wrong, I don't know him personally). But why stop here? He has only touched briefly on questions about physics and the nature of time -- there are books' worth of material here relating your theories to the natural sciences. I want to see him get into the nitty gritty. Elaborate more on healthcare applications, show me even more scientific studies that support an idealist rather than a materialist interpretation. Make hypotheses and test them in collaboration with other like-minded scientists! There are countless more questions to address and it would be a true shame if Bernardo's contributions, incredible as they are, stopped here.

standing up for truth at last!

I'm very impressed by the intelligence of Bernardo Kastrup. He's like a man who sees through the Matrix and exposes the giant with clay feet because he knows. Sometimes we don't notice what's in front of our nose. Kastrup helps us to focus.

Much of this mans genius is found scattered here and there, in thick books or forgotten minds. But Kastrup writes so eloquently and with the confidence of one who knows that, the ghost of Kant, or some other German, must be whispering in Berbardo's ear!

Bernardo says it so succinctly and he easily criticises this crazy materialism, especially the 'neuromania' we see all around and he explains idealism so precisely, that you know that materialism is wrong. You just needed a helping hand to point you this way.
As an aside, professor Raymond Tallis coined the terms 'Neuromania' and 'Darwinitus' in Aping Mankind. But Tallis could never crack it because he is hesitant to take the position of idealism. So Raymond Tallis writes 400 page books, excruciatingly long winded books, tiptoeing around the truth like most philosophers do. All the best are today hesitant, probably for fear of ridicule, or, even worse, they don't know what they are talking about.

Arthur Schopenhauer wrote an essay arguing that, well, most people who get a degree in, say, philosophy, are not philosophers. They are like bureaucrats who get a little office room, as a temp worker, and work their way up the ladder of bureaucracy. Now imagine if the common man or woman started worshipping the bureaucrats because they knew no better? The higher up the rung the bureaucrat is, the more heaps of praise and glory is given to this bureaucrat and the bureaucrat becomes the only authority and the common men and women, who know no better, because they are fed documentaries and books, listen to the opinions of the bureaucracy, and so a momentum builds up. Schopenhauer argued that because a bureaucrat has a Phd in philosophy, the bureaucrat concludes that Plato was a philosopher, and, therefore, the bureaucrat is now Plato!!! We see this sort of thing all of the time. Schopenhauer wrote this in the 19th Century. It is much worse today.

Well this is the modern academy and, hence, the modern world and this is why Bernardo Kastrup sounds like a genius when, in reality, he is merely exposing the clothes of the bureaucrat.

Bernardo Kastrup is very different from the academic rung. He knows what he is talking about, he goes out and says it as it is. No bureaucrat balloney, just the truth at last.

About the Author
Henry B. Freeman, Ph.D. is a fundraising consultant who works with nonprofits and educational institutions throughout North America. He is also a frequent guest speaker and specialist in the areas of board training, motivation, leadership and organizational development. Additional titles include father, husband and Co-Founder with his nine-year-old granddaughter of Addison & Grandpa's Tomatoes , a micro agricultural enterprise (twelve tomato plants) that sells home-grown tomatoes on Saturday mornings at a small town Farmers Market. A native southerner born and raised in the Carolinas, in 1992 Dr. Freeman left the comfort and security of a college vice president to spend a year living with orphans in war-torn El Salvador. Upon his return to the United States, he left a twenty-year career in advancement and positions of leadership at Earlham College, The University of Michigan, and Yale to found his consulting firm, H. Freeman Associates, and to spend the next ten years raising the funds needed to send 150 poor and orphaned Salvadoran children to school. When not travelling for speaking engagements and work with clients Henry spends his time gardening and at home with his wife Sandy, two dogs and a cat named Bill in Richmond, Indiana.

For those who feel called to the ministry of fundraising

This is the most powerful book I have read in ages!!! Many of the stories were very powerful and took me back to my own significant donor experiences when I took the risk to be authentically present in their lives. It reminded me of why I have loved what I have done over the years.

Written in the tradition of Henri Nouwen's "A Spirituality of Fundraising," it deserves a place on anyone's bookshelf and now sits between that classic and Bill Sturtevant's "The Artful Journey." As soon as it becomes available, I will want to buy about a dozen copies to give to these special friends to help validate their shared approach to our important work.

These stories come as close as words can possibly take us to meeting each person in person

I don't know whether a review written by an author's brother carries any weight but I have known him all my life. Henry has always been curious about people. He has always, even as a child, sought to meet and understand everyone regardless of their differences. Henry would talk with the meek as well as the bully and each would usually respond to his sincere interest and compassion. He takes chances on people; he presents himself, open-hearted and vulnerable, at every opportunity to meet someone new and he listens - really listens.
Among those who already know him Henry talks a lot, a whole lot, but he doesn't usually talk about himself. He talks about the interesting people he's met. He knows that everyone has a story. He shares those stories. Henry could tell a thousand stories from a lifetime of listening. In Unlacing the Heart Henry has chosen just a few which span the emotional breadth of humanity and expertly demonstrates 'what really matters'.
Reading this book is the closest thing to actually meeting Henry that I can imagine. Trust me, you want to meet Henry.

"Unlacing the Heart" is a gem

"Unlacing the Heart" captures his decades of experience with aligning what matters most deeply in our hearts and the particular, artful and professional journey that we call fundraising. The 55 Club has done it again!

The 55 Club has done it again! "Rita of the Ario Germanen" is the book of the Thing. Guido von List goes back into the annals of time and shows the reader how those very same things which we feel today were first felt and applied by our ancestors. The High and Holy Eight then evolves into the Holy Vehme. The book culminates with chapters from the Guido von List society. Plilipp Stauff was certainly a man of interest.
The idea of applying this book to the Wotanist circles of today has limitless possibilities. I recommend this book be read by all Indo-Europeans and especially anyone interested in the cosmic laws of nature.
