About the Author
Henry B. Freeman, Ph.D. is a fundraising consultant who works with nonprofits and educational institutions throughout North America. He is also a frequent guest speaker and specialist in the areas of board training, motivation, leadership and organizational development. Additional titles include father, husband and Co-Founder with his nine-year-old granddaughter of Addison & Grandpa's Tomatoes , a micro agricultural enterprise (twelve tomato plants) that sells home-grown tomatoes on Saturday mornings at a small town Farmers Market. A native southerner born and raised in the Carolinas, in 1992 Dr. Freeman left the comfort and security of a college vice president to spend a year living with orphans in war-torn El Salvador. Upon his return to the United States, he left a twenty-year career in advancement and positions of leadership at Earlham College, The University of Michigan, and Yale to found his consulting firm, H. Freeman Associates, and to spend the next ten years raising the funds needed to send 150 poor and orphaned Salvadoran children to school. When not travelling for speaking engagements and work with clients Henry spends his time gardening and at home with his wife Sandy, two dogs and a cat named Bill in Richmond, Indiana.

For those who feel called to the ministry of fundraising

This is the most powerful book I have read in ages!!! Many of the stories were very powerful and took me back to my own significant donor experiences when I took the risk to be authentically present in their lives. It reminded me of why I have loved what I have done over the years.
Written in the tradition of Henri Nouwen's "A Spirituality of Fundraising," it deserves a place on anyone's bookshelf and now sits between that classic and Bill Sturtevant's "The Artful Journey." As soon as it becomes available, I will want to buy about a dozen copies to give to these special friends to help validate their shared approach to our important work.

These stories come as close as words can possibly take us to meeting each person in person

I don't know whether a review written by an author's brother carries any weight but I have known him all my life. Henry has always been curious about people. He has always, even as a child, sought to meet and understand everyone regardless of their differences. Henry would talk with the meek as well as the bully and each would usually respond to his sincere interest and compassion. He takes chances on people; he presents himself, open-hearted and vulnerable, at every opportunity to meet someone new and he listens - really listens.
Among those who already know him Henry talks a lot, a whole lot, but he doesn't usually talk about himself. He talks about the interesting people he's met. He knows that everyone has a story. He shares those stories. Henry could tell a thousand stories from a lifetime of listening. In Unlacing the Heart Henry has chosen just a few which span the emotional breadth of humanity and expertly demonstrates 'what really matters'.
Reading this book is the closest thing to actually meeting Henry that I can imagine. Trust me, you want to meet Henry.
