From the author's second son

Barry Milazzo is my dad. I'm the younger brother of the son with the "broken" like referenced in All the King's Horses - a life that was tragically shattered in many ways. I won't go into detail on the main points of the book, which you can learn from reading on your own. What I will say, is that this author is an honest and loving man. Read this as coming from someone who truly cares about his family and about his readers. Turn through these pages if you need to hear from someone who, perhaps like yourself, has had to grapple with tragedy, and has chosen to fight instead of fly.
Life may bring you to the end of your rope. When that time comes, you'll need to know that there's a purpose and a hope through it all. I pray that this story will lift your eyes to that hope.

Captivating

What a captivating story this was that sometimes brought me to tears, sometimes brought a smile, and always gave me so much to reflect upon. I was drawn into it not only by the tragic way this family's newborn son suddenly became brain injured, and the challenging yet memorable paths it took them on, but also by the powerful way the author teaches Biblical truths which are not so popular to talk about today -- like persevering in hope which became indispensable, as he put it, in the face of very depressing circumstances. No pious platitudes, just Biblical Truths brought to life as this very dedicated dad is forced to recognize his limitations and weaknesses in order to be led to rely upon Christ. Such a refreshing and transparent book that taught me lessons I know I will be remembering for a long time to come, and will definitely be reading again!

A must read!

The story behind this book is so tragic. We all hear of stories that harp on triumph from tragedy. But, what if that triumph never comes? What if there is still so much difficulty around every bend in this road of life? This story has plenty of triumph and blessings. There are plenty of victories. A community, especially a faith community, sure knows how to rally behind a great cause and a hurting family.
However, there is a great darkness, a hopelessness, an unbelievable burden that is placed on a father's shoulders that we all never want to have to entertain ourselves. We wish so desperately to be able to reach through the pages of the book, to the father himself, to help ease the burden in whatever ways we, as readers, can. We see a trapped child who has the capacity to understand his shortcomings and to be angry about it. We follow countless descriptions of a child in the midst of utter depression and despair.
I started this review by saying, "What if the triumph never comes?"
The amazing thing about this book is that Jesus Christ and his gospel message is present through every turn, whether a victory or a new struggle. To one reading the pages of this story with only their eyes, they would see all that is written above: the despair, the pain, the utter exhaustion, the end of the road... However, God looks to the heart of the matter. Although we all know this dad isn't perfect, his ability to turn to Christ and follow Him, to be picked up by Him, to continue to press on and see the good in each day. Even if he couldn't see the good in a day, he trusted that God had good in it. A shocking part of this story though, is that it doesn't end with that feel good "everything turned out okay" moment. The good that God has planned still feels elusive to this father. Some difficulties still arise. Yet, even in the authoring of this book, he presses on.
For those that know the Milazzo family personally, as I do, we see the good that has come from this family's faithfulness in ways that I'm sure they may never know. With the publication of this book, many will embrace this story. Hopefully, through it's inspirational message, many will cling to God through any darkness and will find rest and courage in Christ.
Isaiah 50:10 "Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God."
Hint for how to read this book: The story goes back and forth between the father's personal narrative and how God worked him through each step of the journey. I would recommend reading a portion of the narrative and then the applicable spiritual application. Pause from continuing until you've had time to really think through the verses. I would recommend keeping a journal as well. Don't just plow through it. This truly is a gift given to us; the personal testimony of someone wrestling and trusting Christ through the darkness as Isaiah says in the verse above. It's powerful. This might be especially powerful to anyone that is a parent. I've known the Milazzo's story for 12 years, but reading through this book as a parent myself now changed my perspective completely.
