This book is a MUST for every parent! In a world that pushes physical and emotional relationships with young people WAY too early...this is a breath of fresh air for taking a new path! To teach our young people to "pursue" God instead chasing the opposite sex and look at this season of their life as a "season of preparation" for manhood and womanhood! Estoy más satisfecho con el contenido de este libro, el autor se arma de valor y expresa lo que siente y percibe sin temor a las críticas, es eso lo que debemos hacer, no tener miedo a no creer lo que nos han dicho que creamos y refutar lo que no es bueno a nuestro sentido común. Definitivamente es un libro solo para dos tipos de personar, aquellas cerradas y aquellas dispuestas a evolucionar.

I am satisfied with the content of this book, the author took courage and state what he feels and perceive with no fear to the criticism, that is what we must do, not to be afraid to not believe what we have been told to believe and refuse what is not good or pleasant to our common sense. Definitely a book for only two kind of people, those with closed mind and those willing to evolve.

Having read three books of Leanne's, I decided I wanted to read her autobiography. What a treat. The only other autobiography that has thrilled me as much is Agnes Sanford, Sealed Orders. Agnes is featured in this book of Leanne's. In fact Agnes took note of Leanne after she wrote her first book, Real Presence, and invited Leanne to visit and that account is given. What a a real treat to read and re- read this author. All her books are so rich with truth and insight that one could read them many times and still glean new revelation.

I have read all of LeAnne's books,some of them several times. I also had the privilege of meeting her at a small gathering in New Jersey where I think I was really the only one there who realized how much God was using this precious women to help set his children free. Please if you have a chance read all of her books. You will not be disappointed.

About the Author
On October 17, 2012, Brett Parks was shot in the abdomen while breaking up a robbery. Because of his injuries, Brett spent 20 days in a coma. Upon waking, Brett found that he had lost a kidney, a third of his colon, and the lower part of his right leg. Brett is the founder and president of Second Shot Ministry and travels around the nation speaking to schools, businesses, and churches about hope, faith, and how he overcame a 99.999% mortality rate.
Because of his heroic actions, Brett was rewarded with the governor's Medal of Merit, which was presented by Governor Rick Scott.
The city of Jacksonville also acknowledged Brett by presenting him with a proclamation stating that December 5th is Brett Parks Day.
When Brett is not traveling, he loves spending time with beautiful wife Susan and playing with his son Jason and daughter Stella.

As I watched this young man grow up I never thought he would grow up to be a hero. He was just one of the church kids growing up with my girls. One day turned his life upside down. One decision changed his life forever and he was made stronger in the Lord. I think you will enjoy his story. I continue to pray for him as he tells his story and of the sacrifice Christ paid for each of us who choose to follow Him.

Brett Parks truly is a miracle man!

Brett Parks: Miracle Man: A Bullet That Ignited a Purpose-Filled Life (by Brett Parks) is a story of hope and inspiration. In October 2012, Brett Parks was shot by a mugger. He nearly died, and his road to recovery included a 20-day coma, multiple surgeries, and an amputation. Parks was a Navy airman and fitness trainer, but he never had to face anything like this.

It was very eye-opening to read about his experience waking up from the coma. It was also educational to read about the thoughts running through his head after he woke up and the emotions he experienced as he was recovering. His journey of recovery was inspiring and encouraging. He went through a tremendous ordeal and still prevailed. Parks is a good writer and presents his story well. The pictures included throughout the book were a nice touch, and the stories about his childhood were great to read. I also liked the chapters focusing on his wife and children.

In the book, Parks talks about his faith in Jesus Christ and how he leaned on God. He includes a lot of great Bible verses. I loved his analyzations in the chapter, “Was it worth it?” I liked reading about his recovery progress, and the goals he made for himself, such as running a big race. Parks had a long road to recovery, but he travelled the road with a perseverant spirit. Brett Parks truly is a miracle man, and his story is amazing.

A Must Read, Guaranteed to make your day a 'Heck of a Day'!

I set out to read this book over the weekend, but ended up finishing it in less than 4 hours. I couldn't put it down, as Brett makes you feel as if you're there with him through his time in the Navy, from time of being shot, to his rehabilitation. He gives hope and understanding to life's trauma in a practical and at times humorous manner. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those that have experienced trauma, no matter how small or large (which is just about everyone on Earth). It's not an easy read on your emotions at times, but has Jim Valvano so enthusiastically stated, “To me there are three things everyone should do every day. Number one is laugh. Number two is think -- spend some time time in thought. Number three, you should have your emotions move you to tears. If you laugh, think and cry, that's a heck of a day.” This book definitely allows you to express these three emotions, which makes for a "heck of a day"!

Quintessential Spirit of Character ~

I received Teresa Ward's book "Gateway to Dreams" recently. I devoured it within hours. I simply couldn't put it down. I usually don't do that.

Let me quote Teresa from her book. "What this book is not. This book is not a comprehensive, in-depth Biblical study of dreams, interpretation, or the voice of God. This book is also not a dream dictionary. It is not a debate and is not the answer to everything concerning dreams. It is also not a formula for dream interpretation or for hearing God. Dreams, interpretation, and Gods voice are very deep topics that cannot be covered in one book".

Allow me to add to that; this book is also not a comprehensive, exhaustive, intensive study of allegories, metaphors, symbols & the like.

But let me tell you what it is; one of the most deeply intuitive, intensively insightful & engagingly thoughtful books on dreams & interpreting I've ever read.

The essence & substance, from the front to the back, is caring, loving & warm. It invites you to turn each page...as quickly as I could, I found.

I can say, without a doubt, Teresa Ward's book "Gateway to Dreams" is the quintessential spirit of character, heart & humility on Dream Interpretation. And I've read a ton of them.

Beginning Your Personal Dream Adventure

In her book “Gateway to Dreams” Teresa Ward helps the reader perceive dreams from a new perspective and gain a deeper insight and understanding into their meaning and interpretation. She carefully validates Biblical evidence of how God uses dreams, visions, and natural circumstances to reveal His hidden mysteries and communicate with His people today.

“Gateway to Dreams” is unique in that, although, the book is meant to be an introduction to dream interpretation, Ward goes beyond the theory and theology, to encourage her readers to follow the model not the method. Her writing style is intended to make reading the book fun, and interactive, resulting in a spiritual and growth experience.

In sections one and two Ward introduces the subject of dreams, describes their purposes, and categories, including: Prophetic, warning, instructional, and encouragement dreams. In sections three and four she goes on to present foundational elements of dream interpretation, a dream matrix, and symbology.

I found the “Jedi Dream Tips” and succinct summary statements to be a helpful tool for assimilation of the material within each chapter. Ward’s writing is straightforward, informational, instructional, and an uplifting reading experience.

Deep but Simple

Very well outlined and written. Wealthy both in relating of experiences and Scriptures. Narrative style is like having a visit with Teresa. No magic lists, no tarot cards, just good advice on seeking answers and understanding from the One Daniel said could give those things regarding dreams.

Clear and easy to understand

I find this book to be very clearly written and easy to understand. It is like a primer on many different aspects of Buddhism, from the point of view of the author who has trained and taught mainly on the teachings of Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa. Readers of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's others books will notice that there is some of the same content here, but with different wording and organization. There is also a lot of new content. In my opinion this book is geared toward someone new to Buddhism, however I think practitioners of all levels will find plenty here. The explanation of Tantra is very clear and easy to understand.

A Unique Presentation of Buddhism for Modern Times

This book is quite astonishing, containing as it does, in one small volume, all the teachings necessary to attain enlightenment. What's so unique is that it contains both sutra and tantra teachings from the Ganden Oral Lineage, or the lineage of the great Buddhist Teacher Je Tsongkhapa. It's very unusual to have such a lucid and clear explanation of both of these sets of teachings in one book. First there is a very clear presentation of the lamrim or 'Stages of the Path to Enlightenment' teachings of sutra and then there is an extensive and practical explanation of tantra in general, and of the Highest Yoga Tantra practices of Heruka Body Mandala and Vajrayogini in particular.

The material is presented as a practical guide to developing wisdom and compassion, with italicised meditations embedded in the text which allow contemplation while reading. The publishing of this book is a unique event, as such a clear and concise presentation of Buddha's teachings, suited to the modern day practitioner with a busy life, has never existed before. As such, I highly recommend it.

Modern Buddhism for beginners and experienced practitioners

I have the paper and free eBook copy of this book that includes the entire path of Buddhism in a qualified, thorough, clear, and concise manner. I have found this book to be very beneficial for myself and others. I treasure Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's teachings and am amazed (but not surprised) that he is offering this book for free (in eBook format) so that countless living beings may benefit from the pure Dharma within it. I have many of his books and find the teachings in Modern Buddhism to be consistent with his other books, but there are some subtle, beneficial differences in this book that are not in any of his other books. Geshe Kelsang always seems to be relating to people of the current time. He seems to constantly hone and clarify the teachings so that they are easy for modern people to read, understand, and put into practice. Because the eBook is free, I have found it to be very easy to "give" to others who might not otherwise have access to the book. Many people I know have found this book extremely helpful in their daily lives. I highly recommend it and rejoice that it is free for everyone. I love being able to have the book in paper format as well as on my computer and on my smart phone. I have pure Dharma with me wherever I am--coffee shops, car repair waiting areas, etc. With these teachings (this book) easily accessible to me at all times, I always have the option to choose a positive, virtuous attitude.

When I selected Honey in the River by Marsha Scarbrough, the book's subtitle: Shadow, Sex and West African Spirituality certainly painted an intriguing picture. I was not disappointed. The author provides a primer of Yoruba worldview as she narrates an intimate story of love and vulnerability.

Marsha Scarbrough, a long-time wisdom seeker, relates that after her failed marriage she finds her way to a Nigerian spiritual leader who is practicing Ifa. She attends meetings where vibrant hand drumming is used to produce trance states for ecstatic dancers. She becomes enthralled with the stories, the language, the stimulation of the senses and the energy of the dance. All the pieces fall into place and she begins a sexual liaison with an Ifa teacher she calls Oba. Anthropologists call this "going native," although Scarbrough is quick to say she is not an anthropologist, but a devotee who found herself transferring feelings of love to her spiritual teacher.

Hand drumming is integral to Ifa experience and was introduced by Babatunde Olatunji to my generation through early collaborations with Carlos Santana and the Grateful Dead. Oba played with Olatunji for over 10 years. I love the sound and visceral feeling that comes from hand drumming. This is the only book I know of that comes with its own sound track of Ifa chants.

I felt pulled into the book, as if I were invited to join as a disciple to wriggle and writhe to the fervent rhythm of her narrative. The author is honest and reflective about how the man she at first accepted as a polygamist because of his culture was nothing more than a manipulative philanderer. She details the deceptions and her struggle with reconciling how her path seeking spiritual wisdom led her into entangled relationships. Here is a capable professional woman mired in drama worthy of a soap opera!

She analyzes how the warped belief system of Oba allowed him to lie and hide his actions from his followers. This admired spiritual leader had multiple sex partners, did not adhere to the cultural norm of polygamy, and still felt he was honoring the tenets of Ifa and leading a spiritual life.

I was interested in this story because of my love of music of the African diaspora and cross-cultural experiences. Ifa is an ancient earth-based religion that has existed for thousands of years. There is a reason that the beliefs resonate at a primeval level. Through Ms. Scarbrough's eyes, I was able to look into a world I knew little about, lived for a while vicariously, and was able to escape unscathed.

A Wonderful Read for the Open Hearted

Scarbrough covers a lot of territory -- physical, emotional, spiritual -- in this engaging, inspiring and provocative work. I loved following her on her journey of discovery. She is an open, honest guide -- able to share the highs and lows, good and bad, confusion, passion, pain, ecstasy in equal measure in such a way that I could question my own assumptions about "right" and "wrong" but also saw a path to find answers without judging myself or others. A wonderful read for anyone who is open to exploration too . . .

A fascinating and well-written account of the author's spiritual journey with Ifa (West African spiritual tradition) in addition to her personal journey of healing dysfunctional relationships. Without a doubt anyone reading this book has had very similar experiences. It's a great opportunity to see how we're more alike than different. I highly recommend it.

Father Jake Laboon was born on April 11, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The third of nine children, he was raised in a faith-filled family. He attended Catholic schools until his matriculation to the United States Naval Academy in June 1940. A tight end for the USNA football team and an All American in lacrosse, Laboon graduated with his classmates in June 1943. He served with distinction in the Pacific submarine force, winning the Silver Star for gallantry aboard USS Peto (SS 265).

Laboon left the Navy in 1946 and immediately entered formation for the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He was ordained a priest in 1956. Two years later he reentered the Navy as a chaplain, where he stayed until 1980. He then joined the pastoral staff serving at Manresa Retreat Center, in Annapolis, and was for four years the pastor of St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Parish in Woodstock, Maryland. He died on August 1, 1988 a victim of esophageal cancer. In 1995, the destroyer USS Laboon was commissioned in his honor. Loved by all with whom he had contact, Father Jake was a model of Christian fidelity, faith and complete dedication to God and country.

This is a fascinating, well written and well researched ...o

This is a fascinating, well written and well researched biography of a unique meld of Jesuit priest and true blue Navy person. Fr. Jake was my pastor the last four years of his life. This book fleshes out the broad outline of his life that his parishioners learned from his visiting family members and Navy friends, since he was too modest to boast of his own accomplishments. During his career as a Navy chaplain, he was a spiritual and sometimes a practical resource for naval personnel of all ranks and all denominations. Fr. Jake was so well regarded that, while dying from esophageal cancer, he was given the opportunity to be entombed in the crypt of the Naval Academy Chapel. He chose instead the Jesuit cemetery in Woostock, MD, to lie among his brothers in religion. This choice as typical of Fr. Jake. Fr. Gribble's book is a fitting memorial for those who knew him and an inspiring, accessible biography of a hero who was truly a man for others: military, civilian, high rank and low. Read it and enjoy.

“A Navy Priest” is an excellent book about a Jesuit Priest

“A Navy Priest” is an excellent book about a Jesuit Priest, a war hero, a Navy Chaplain, a Naval Academy Graduate, an All-American Lacrosse Player, and a remarkable human being. The author traces the life of Father Laboon from being a child in Pennsylvania, through years at the Naval Academy, service in WWII, and the transformation toward entering the Jesuit Priesthood and then the reentering of Naval Service as a Chaplain; and finally after that career, the final circle back to a Pastor of a small church in Maryland.
The author, Father Gribble, himself an Academy Graduate, uses numerous personal interviews and splendidly researched material on how one man can so modestly and humbly affect so many lives. Father Laboon did not just physically save a man in WWII, but spiritually saved so many others during the rest of his life. If you want to read about an incredible human being, who exemplifies the best this earthly world can offer, then you want to read this book.

Amazing Navy War Hero and Priest, who had a Navy Destroyer named after him

Navy Priest: he Life of Captain Jake Laboon, SJ was a wonderful book highlighting an amazing man. This warm, readable, well researched, fascinating and inspiring book by Richard Gribble CSC highlights the ups and downs of life of tremendous human being and how his vision and strengths have impacted on so many within the Navy and through his non-Navy ministries. Learning of Fr. Jake's WW II war heroism, 22 years as a Navy chaplain, his amazing pastoral talents at Manresa retreat house and his parish work was of special interest to me since he was my pastor at St. Alphonsus Rodriquez Church in Woodstock until he died in 1988. He ministered to my teenage sons, my wife and me in powerful ways. Knowing him as I did, this book captured his greatness and brought to light parts of his journey that I did not know. A most interesting highlight of his life is how as a Catholic priest and chaplain, he had the USS Laboon, a guided Burke class missile destroyer, named after him by the Navy when he died. Fr. Jake's incredible naval career makes this honor understandable and appropriate. Fr. Gribble is a gifted writer, who makes sense of Fr. Jake's priesthood, Navy career and life and I have recommended the book to family and friends!
