So Many Connections!

Downfallen is totally amazing! It was the perfect book to (I assume) wrap up the current trilogy of Realms of the Infinite. Unlike the first trilogy, this one doesn't focus on Araine as heavily as Books of the Infinite focused on Ela.
Downfallen focuses mainly on Corban and Matteo, who along with the plotline were all introduced in earlier books. We learn of Matteo's fate before we learn of Matteo, in Exiles, when Araine warns the Darzeq prince Sheth to at least save the youngest. Plus, at the end of...I'm not going to spoil. But we do get a connection to one of the scenes near the end of Queen.
One of my favorite things about this series are the connections to Biblical stories, the better you know your Bible the more interesting the book is. For example, Downfallen's plot rides on the tale of a grandmother who slaughters her grandchildren after her son dies so she can claim the throne. If this sounds familiar to anyone it is because it is from 2 Kings 11. The Grandmother's name Athaliah. The whole series is chalk full of these wonderful little connections that make reading these books special, worthwhile, and memorable.
Downfallen was utterly perfect, and long! It is easily the longest book in either series, and boy were those extra pages wonderful! I couldn't put the book down, literally! It never left my hands. I didn't bother to use a bookmark, my fingers were good enough. I don't know if I can give enough praise for the work of art that is Downfallen. Absolutely wonderful! It brings back all of the staples you just need in these books without lulling you into a sense of complacency, like each book you read has an obvious formula and you already know what is going to happen and how. But it isn't like that! Each book is so surprising with its journey! Each book is unique and a new experience, and I never knew how much I loved that until I read Downfallen.
If you only read one book a year, I'd say you need to read faster because right now there are six books in the series, and with the way R.J. Larson has been churning out books, her newest, Valor, is coming fast!

Perhaps my favourite Larson book yet!

Filled with action-packed scenes and characters you will absolutely love, "DownFallen" is another tremendous book from the talented pen of R. J. Larson. I simply couldn't put this one down after I got sucked into the story (in the very first chapter!), as I had to find out the fate of Matteo after his family was tragically massacred, a sad testimony to the depths of human depravity in the quest for power. The pacing was spot on as I raced from scene to scene, and I greatly enjoyed Corban's role in the story, as he is hunted by the Infinite and is used in miraculous ways that could only be explained by the arrival of a power from outside of himself. I loved watching his journey to a place of belief, a theme many readers will resonate with, as we can all struggle with doubt and with believing that God exists and wants to use us to carry out his grand plans for the world. Matteo's quest to overthrow his grandmother from her stolen place of power provides a classic story of good versus evil, and I enjoyed every bit of that struggle, right up to the oh so satisfying (and bitter-sweet) conclusion to the story. As a male reader, I found the battle scenes particularly enjoyable and well-written. DownFallen truly has it all - heroes and heroines worth cheering for, romance done with just the right touch, and great dialogue that ties everything together. My only regret with the story is that it had to end!
I almost feel guilty for stating that DownFallen may just be my favourite Larson book yet, because I simply loved Ela from Larson's book, "Prophet". Maybe rather than choosing which one I like best, I will just encourage you to get your hands on a copy of "DownFallen" yourself. I guarantee you will enjoy it! I award "DownFallen" 5 out of 5 stars.

Beautiful Retelling of an Ancient Story

This book is a tapestry of words, pulled from a Source that has inspired billions across millenia. Upon this tapestry, Larson brings to life characters that you root for, become frustrated with and even weep over. But overall, you will be inspired by the faith, courage and honor of their lives.
Mainly based on a well known story in Judges, crossed with references to other biblical account, this story follows the transformative portion of a villain's life. The story asks questions of the world and our thoughts of it. What is the villain? What is the single act the separates the good from the bad, the saintly from the depraved? We are none if us inherently good. It is the choices we make that shape our destiny. The choice to let circumstances of false beliefs hold us captive or turn to the One holds destiny in the palm of His hand. It He that calls to each of us.
Let me close by saying this: In modern times we cannot often relate to the worldview that shaped the times described in scripture. We read it, but few truly understand. I would not dare say that this fictional account takes the place of scripture. However, I will say that Larson has tastefully and beautifully used the art of the story to honor the historic accounts treasured by many around the world.
