About the Author
Robert Wilkin(Ph.D., Dallas Theological Seminary) was born and raised in Southern California. After graduating from college he joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ, serving two years each at Arkansas State University and North Carolina State University. During his seminary studies Bob served in a variety of ministries including a year each in college and high school ministry, a year as a hospital chaplain, and three years as a pastor. After receiving his doctorate, Bob taught at Woodcrest College in Lindale, Texas and then at Multnomah Bible College in Portland, Oregon.
Feeling that there was a great need for an educational and networking organization for Christians who believe in the freeness of the Gospel, Bob started Grace Evangelical Society in June of 1986. In July of 1987 he left his teaching position to devote full time to heading up this ministry. Since its inception, readership of the bimonthly newsletter, Grace In Focus, has grown from 30 to over 9,500 in 54 countries.
Dr. Wilkin has written three books, Confident in Christ, The Road to Reward, andSecure and Sure, as well as two booklets, and hundreds of newsletter and journal articles. Bob and his wife Sharon live in Lewisville, Texas.

Wilkin's wrong foundation

The description is sufficient to discredit the work. MacArthur in no way teaches any form of works righteousness.
I've been listening to him for over thirty years. MacArthur simply affirms that redemption is a work of God and
God changes lives. Assurance of salvation does not come because one claims to believe or have faith, or raised
a hand or walked an aisle or said a prayer.
MacArthur is not creating doubt; he is sending a warning to not be deceived about the true gospel, not to be misled
by a powerless gospel of mere profession without evidence of transformation.
From start to finish redemption is a package deal that is initiated, kept and completed by God.

The Proposed Cure Is Worse than the Perceived Illness!

Wilkin seeks to take apart MacArthur's' book, The Gospel According to Jesus (TGATJ), chapter-by-chapter and nearly paragraph-by-paragraph. Be forewarned that as an ardent proponent of what he calls "Free Grace" soteriology, Wilkin's critique is very much one-sided and everything is passed through the lens of his free grace viewpoint. While MacArthur is known for overstating his case in TGATJ (so much so it required more balanced editing in later editions), Wilkin's views and soteriology are so extreme that you simply trade off one man's overstatement for another man's even greater extremes. The Free Grace soterilogy that Wilkin promotes is a minority view of a fracturing movement that does not hold up to biblical and historical evaluation. This book has the same characteristics that hold for all Free Grace teachers: it is pedantic and filled with sophistry (reasoning that sounds correct but is actually false). Be discerning! The soteriology of leading Free Grace advocates is becoming so extreme that even those sympathetic to its basic interpretation are writing against the extremes views of teachers like WIlkin - see for example Should Christians Fear Outer Darkness? and The Gospel of the Christ: A Biblical Response to the Crossless Gospel Regarding the Contents of Saving Faith.

A Zinger of a Response

Bob Wilkin has written an excellent rebuttal to John MacArthur's "The Gospel According to Jesus." Wilkin's book reveals how MacArthur uses obscure Biblical passages out of context, uses Biblical passages without exegesis or any explanation whatsoever, and manipulates the text of the Bible to fit his own Puritan theology. Anyone who has read "The Gospel According to Jesus" needs to read "A Gospel of Doubt" afterward. It will shed light on all the dark places of MacArthur's message and provide assurance of salvation to anyone who simply believes in Jesus for it. There need not be doubt about one's salvation and "A Gospel of Doubt" shows the reader how to abandon the doubt and insecurity and rest easy in the Lord's embrace.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to those trapped in Lordship Salvation.
