For the past eighteen years, Lexi Christensen has been sheltered from the truth, protected by a soft-cushioned life of normalcy, until the contents of an envelope link her to an ancient vow. All Lexi wants is to get out from between the vise grips of her suddenly protective parents, rescue an historic mansion before she leaves for college, and stop herself from falling in love with the man her best friend claims to love. But finding the envelope thrusts her into new choices . . . and new danger. Someone knows more about Lexi’s heritage than she does, wants what she’s found, and will risk her life to get it. As her future twists into an incredible mission that propels her from her sand-ringed island home to a foreign mountaintop, she’s in a race against both time and danger. Her faith may be strong, but is God asking too much?

Old Testament treasure hunt
By chrisGA
I thought I knew where the story was going—a sweet, coming-of-age story of eighteen-year-old Lexi as she discovers her own past while exploring an old house. Lexi is likeable and inspires our sympathy for her feelings of the angst and restlessness that comes when taking the first steps of independence and autonomy. She is searching for something that she can’t quite describe, and her frustration over the romance of her best friend with the boy she secretly loves adds further conflict. However, the book from the beginning is sprinkled with hints of a somber responsibility that is in store for her, secrets kept by her parents, some unnamed threat to her safety, and some mysterious link to the old house. Also, tantalizing the reader is a strange friendship between computer hackers here and in Saudi Arabia and the plot they are hatching. By the 25th page, I was happily hooked and kept reading until the end which resulted in no housework done and little sleep. It was worth it.
Lexi and her friends are practicing Christians so her faith is a subtle but ever-present theme in the book. We are encouraged to see God’s hand in the events of Lexi’s, and our own, lives as well as listen to God’s still, small voice of guidance and reassurance. As the treasure hunt begins, the Biblical references become part of the plot.
The characters were believable, and the storyline filled with deliciously suspenseful intrigue. I especially appreciated the author’s use of language. The descriptions were filled with vivid imagery: shards of lightning, thunder bruising the sky, fingers on fire with curiosity and anticipation. The action was engaging, but I also enjoyed savoring the way she turned a phrase or two or many. Overall, this was a delightful book, and I recommend it highly.

Unusual Legacy Leads to Adventure
By Anne Rightler
Sally Chambers has given readers a delightful experience in her book The Stonekeepers. Perhaps a Young Adult genre, it certainly can be enjoyed by the 'mature' reader too. Lexi, 18, is determined to save the crumbling and somehow familiar mansion, Northbrick, from its soon scheduled destruction. Little does she realize the mystery and adventure she and her two best friends, Jenni, and Ridge, will unleash when they decide to explore the abandoned building. Old letters, ominous warnings, and odd happenings, from Massachusetts to the Middle East The Stonekeepers takes readers on quite the adventure. Friendships are tested and faith is affirmed as Lexi and her friends find a treasure and realize its import. Will they be able to complete the task ahead despite the evil forces close on their trail? Chambers uses Biblical references to validate the historicity of the story. Intimate conversations between Lexi and her Father God are written in italics throughout the book showing the depth of Lexi's trust in her God. Mystery, suspense, typical teen angst, romance and world travel, The Stonekeepers has it all.
I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review. I have posted reviews on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Booksamillion.com, Bookfun.org and GoodReads.

Great Young Adult Adventure
By Daysong Reflections
When I agreed to review “The Stonekeepers”, I was unfamiliar with the author and took a chance because I thought the book might be interesting. I did not realize that teens and young adults seem to be its targeted audience. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

From the very beginning the author sets the perfect tone with a mysterious old house that seems to reach out to Lexi Christensen. When she learns that the house is scheduled to be torn down by the city, she and her two best friends set out to stop it. Along the way, she discovers some secrets that actually do connect her to the old home. Little does she realize the adventure and danger she, her friends, and family will encounter before summer is over.

The story itself is so imaginative yet keeps its characters and their relationships very realistic. I liked that Lexi was a typical teen who had conflicts with her parents, a crush on the same guy her best friend claimed, yet she was always determined to practice her faith and to follow the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit.

I believe this is a book that would be enjoyed by most teens and even some adults. I enjoyed it and these days I am far from young.

This is all about astral projection.
By James Berry
Astral is the ability of detaching one's consciousness from their material self and transferring to it's spiritual form.
I researched about how to do astral projection and I found this book interesting than other books. This book explained to me how and why was astral travel used from ancient to current times. The book shows if it is a supernatural affair, a transcendent liberation, or an afterlife forecast. I learned what the signs for astral projection are and how it actually happens. It is an art which stimulates our minds and imagination as it gives as personal enlightenment. This is a very interesting topic for me. If you have ever seen the movies Insidious, it shows something this book talks about. This is all about astral projection. This book will serve as your guide to discovering the world of astral projection. You will find out how it is to live an out-of-the-body experience as soon as you can master this paranormal ability.

Short and informative.
By Cathy
I recommend this to people who is into the paranormal things; people who has the courage to face the unknown; and people who want to go out of their comfort zones. This book discusses what astral projection is: its general schools of thought, different types, dimensions of astral plane, tips and techniques. There are many unfamiliar terms and Longley’s explanations are very easy to grasp and understand. His guide is simple and very doable especially in learning astral travel through dreaming. But yes, it will require some effort and discipline to get the best results. I liked that he discussed the fear in astral projection because naturally, there is fear of the unknown. All in all, it’s a good read. Also, reading books on meditations, laws of attraction and manifestations, and other related books is highly recommended.

Better Understanding of Astral Projection
By Luis
Bought this book because I am really curious what astral projection is and I was really surprised that this thing really exists. I never knew that this phenomena is really possible. This book helped me to understand what astral projection is. It contains helpful information, guides, history and beliefs surrounding astral projection. The author also tackles the benefits and proven techniques on how this phenomena works and according to the author that this is fun and full of enriching experience but he also warns the readers of the negative side of it and how to stay safe doing this. I love this book because of the frequently asked questions, for the better understanding of the readers.

Explorations in Consciousness: A New Approach to Out-of-Body Experiences, by Frederick Aardema

In Explorations in Consciousness, Frederick Aardema, a clinical researcher, provides a profound account of the out-of-body experience, covering some of the most mystifying aspects of this experience. Throughout the book, the author seamlessly weaves in his own travels into different fields of consciousness, including experiences in the personal field, where he is confronted with the constructs of his own psyche, as well as visitations to collective and archetypal fields of consciousness that appear to have an independent existence beyond the eye of the beholder. Highly original and groundbreaking, Explorations in Consciousness presents a model of reality in which nothing can ever be taken for granted. It proposes that consciousness is embedded within a wider field of possibilities that become real depending on our interaction with the world around us, whether “in” or “out” of the body. Regardless of what you believe about the out-of-body state, this book will challenge and excite you to become an explorer of consciousness. It provides a powerful method to induce the OBE, as well as new tools on how to navigate the entire spectrum of consciousness yourself.

From the Inside Flap

  • The Transition Process - A systematic account of the transition process leading into the out-of-body state.

  • Fields of Consciousness - A comprehensive overview of the different fields of consciousness that can be accessed in the out-of-body state.

  • A Model of Possibilities - A quantum view of reality with direct and practical implications.
  • Navigation in the Void - Accessible tools to effectively navigate consciousness by accessing nonlocal space in the out-of-body state.

  • The Vigil Method - A powerful six-step guide to moving beyond the physical body.

This is one of the best OBE books I've read in many years and I highly recommend it. It was thoroughly enjoyable. One of the reasons I liked it so much is just because of the author's approach. It really makes you think. Hard.
-- Robert Peterson, Author of Out of Body Experiences, Lessons Out of the Body and Answers Within

Explorations of Consciousness represents a new height, a new level in the serious intellectual study of altered states, and specifically the so-called "out of body experience." But it is not a dry and pedantic framework, but an exciting, living framework that has a lot to offer people of all levels of interest. If you want a book with sound methods for inducing an OBE, Fred's book has it. If you want a sophisticated critique of past workers in the area of out-of-body experiencing, lucid dreaming and astral projection, Fred's book has it. If you wish to learn cutting edge ideas about this experience, and how it ties to other areas of learning, ranging from psychology to physics, Fred's book has it. It sets a new standard of quality and intellectual sophistication. It serves as a great example. Needless to say, I recommend you read it!
-- Dr. Donald DeGracia, Associate Professor of Physiology, Wayne State University, Author of Do-OBE and Beyond the Physical

With his careful, detailed scientific consideration of the phenomena, Frederick pulls OBEs out from the smoke screen of flimflammery to present them transparently as a comprehensible human experience - in particular, an experience potentially attainable by all.
-- Dr. Kieron O'Connor, Research Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Montreal, Canada

This book has moved the OBE ball down the field farther than anything since Robert Monroe in the 70's and 80's. The greatest contribution here is the way the author looks at the OBE. While rejecting neural reductionism, he also rejects all forms of geographical or 'travel' analogies. Consciousness is nowhere and can never be anywhere. All the apparent 'travel' to this or that world or zone of experience is a phase shift of eternally stationary consciousness. Check it out, finally somebody with a brain has probed into this deeply. It's the best thing in decades on the OBE.
-- Scott Meredith, Author of Juice: Radical Taiji Energetics

I am blown away. Frederick Aardema has written the master textbook of OBEs how it should be taught in schools. To my mind it will rank as one of the future classics of OBE literature and should be required and essential reading for all OBE investigators.
-- Jurgen Ziewe, Author of Multidimensional Man

Aardema's theory and practice of the OBE deserve careful consideration--his book is bound to become one of the classic texts on the subject.
-- Mathew Fike, Professor of English at Winthrop University

A lucid, scientific, and utterly helpful text on a mysterious topic.
By Andrew
As a practitioner of conscious exploration (lucid dreaming, consciously-induced OBEs, etc.) I have read more books, essays, and personal accounts than I care to recall.

The stack on my bookshelf now includes William Buhlman's books, which I credit for sparking a fire that still burns deep. From there I went to Mastering Astral Projection by Robert Bruce, which lead me to Astral Dynamics, which lead me to Kurt Leland's outstanding works, which lead me to Robert Monroe's works, which led me on to at least half a dozen other perspectives penned by ancient Tibetan Buddhists, Theosophists, Indian Gurus, and random closet mystics proclaiming to have mastered THE best approach to exiting the body. And without blinking, I owe each of these authors and pioneers thanks for helping me formulate as coherent an understanding of the topic as possible.

However, Frederick Aardema's work absolutely stands out as a unique and important contribution that I am recommending to my friends that practice CE as well. This one is required reading for anyone serious about the subject. The book tackles some of the most mysterious and intriguing aspects of the OBE: the nature of the infamous vibrations that precede the exit, how complexities related to mind and conscious awareness impact the experience, how we "separate," in addition to exactly what we suppose "separates" in those very intense moments before we're off exploring, just to name a few. Prepare to be illuminated.

While I continue to hold a fairly mystical perspective on the phenomenon as a whole, I welcome Aardema's scientific approach here-- an approach that has ultimately removed some major obstacles in my understanding. We must be willing to discard treasured assumptions and convictions where evidence invites us to. And if we do, we may just find ourselves immersed in greater freedom. For example, Frederick's Vigil method to inducing an exit just works. It's the only method that's worked for me, and so when I saw what I had been doing in print, and with detailed explanation for each step, I was thrilled.

The puzzle is coming together.

Thank you, Frederick.

One of the best works on OBEs I've ever read
By anonymous
First of all, yes, you should buy this book. Whether you are a "weekend warrior" OBEer or a full-time consciousness explorer, Explorations in Consciousness is full of information which will greatly enrich your personal explorations. Furthermore, Fred's writing style is excellent, and this book is a pleasure to read.

Fred Aardema takes a truly new and original approach to the out-of-body experience. He straddles the fence between outright skeptic and glossy-eyed believer, approaching the subject with an entirely open mind. While it is clear that Fred has been influenced by the Monroe school of thought, he takes nothing for granted. Fred makes his conclusions only on the basis of his own personal experiences.

The conclusions Fred makes in this book-- or rather, the lack thereof-- may frustrate readers who have taken a concrete stance on the nature of OBEs. You will not find extensive cosmologies or revelations regarding the nature of the meaning of life that are present in other works. Rather, this book should be viewed as a big step in the right direction: a completely open-minded approach where conclusions are not drawn unless supported by evidence.

In Chapter 1, we are treated to Fred's first personal OBE experiences at the age of 17. Fred recounts his ever-increasing skepticism towards OBEs over the years, especially in light of the convincing theory that OBEs are merely lucid dreams.

We then move on to Part 1, where Fred addresses basic issue and controversies regarding OBEs. He considers different definitions of OBEs put forth by various individuals, both believer and skeptic. We are then given an overview of occult, contemporary, materialistic, and nonlocal approaches to OBEs. The strengths and weaknesses of all these approaches are given equal consideration. What I found most interesting was Fred's thorough debunking of the lucid dream theory, which has gained popularity on the internet.

Ultimately, Fred seems to favor nonlocal approaches such as those put forth by various researchers and, interestingly, Robert Monroe.

Chapter 3 is a gem-- the transition process. The nature and induction of energy sensations and various pathways to the OBE state are addressed. This chapter answered many questions I had regarding the transition process, including a very basic one-- what are those famous vibrations and where do they come from?

Additionally, we are introduced to the concept of parasomatic (with a second body) and asomatic (without a second body) transitions, which does not bode well for the notion of subtle bodies put forth by theosophists.

Part 2 deals with explorations in the physical field of consciousness. Fred addresses the basic question of whether a projector is roaming the physical world like a ghost, or if he is "elswewhere." Reality fluctuations are explored in detail-- Fred details the basic causes of reality fluctuations and gives strategies for dealing with each.

Fred segues into the subject of veridical perception. His struggle to obtain veridical perception in the physical field is long, frustrating, but ultimately promising with his final "nail test."

Part 3 addresses the human spectrum of consciousness, which Fred divides into the personal and collective fields.

The personal field is where one is projecting into his own psyche, where all objects and persons encountered are extensions of one's own self. In this respect, the personal field is very similar to the lucid dream environment. Fred notes that the personal field exerts a powerful pull, and it is therefore very easy to get sucked in unintentionally.

I respectfully disagree with Fred on some of his conclusions regarding the personal field. He states that many who think that they are astral projecting in collective environments are really inside the personal field. This becomes clear when Fred gives techniques for entering the personal field; included is R. Bruce's technique of flying towards the horizon when in a real-time zone projection. Furthermore, Fred states that Monroe's early Locale II was Monroe's personal field, but Monroe clearly states in Far Journeys that Locale II equates to the the "central rings" that he observed around earth.

Still, Fred's observations and experiences in the personal field are extraordinary. We are treated to Fred's many selves, including probable and higher selves. Techniques are given for utilizing the personal field for growth, such as mindscaping. Fred also recounts a fascinating contact with Monroe himself, where Monroe leads Fred to "clean up" a dirty pond in his personal field.

Section 3 addresses collective fields of consciousness. Fred notes that venturing beyond the personal field is difficult. The personal field creates all kinds of obstacles that seem designed to prevent an aspiring projector from leaving. This is perhaps the most convincing argument for the existence of collective fields-- why doesn't the personal field just create a false collective field? Fred also addresses the notion that the personal field is a training ground for the "real thing," as put forth by William Buhlman and Frank Kepple.

Fred addresses the issue of differentiating between personal and collective fields, including techniques offered by various projectors.

Fred discusses the notion of afterlife environments, and recounts his visit to what seems to be what Monroe calls The Park. Fred also discusses the notion of repository fields, which seem to be information storage areas. These would seem to equate to the Hindu concept of the Akashic records or Tom Campbell's Reality Wide Web.

Fred never fully concludes that collective fields exist. After all, it is difficult to gather evidence. However, he notes that one cannot discount the idea altogether. Extraordinary things happen in these supposed collective fields. Fred mentions a brief visit from his deceased grandmother before he knew she had died.

I am curious as to why Fred didn't attempt to gather verifiable information from supposedly deceased persons. This is the approach advocated by afterlife researcher Bruce Moen. If one projects into an afterlife environment and obtains verifiable information from a deceased person therein, would that not be evidence for the existence of collective fields? It would be interesting to see Fred undertake such an endeavor.

The following chapter offers a preliminary hypothesis for the nature of consciousness and perception. Fred also addresses exploring beyond human consciousness, and the difficulties inherently involved, including his own experience where he felt he had projected into an environment where three-dimensional space did not exist.

Chapter 9 is a treasure-- the vigil method. I see no need to dive into an explanation, as it is available as a free excerpt on Fred's website.

The final chapter covers the issue of navigating in the OBE state. Fred offers a pragmatic mode of travel centered around the void, including techniques for phasing into and out of environments from the void. Monroe's quick-switch method is also discussed.

In conclusion, I highly recommend Explorations in Consciousness. Not since Astral Dynamics has such an encylcopedic and informative book on OBEs been available to the public. Regardless of your stance towards OBEs, your beliefs will be challenged by Fred's extensive observations and sound theory.

The reader is left with the sense that there is much work to be done in understanding OBEs and consciousness in general. However, Explorations in Consciousness is a gigantic leap in the right direction.

At the end of the day, I retain my mystical view on OBEs. However, Fred has given me much to consider. I extend my sincere thanks to Fred for taking the time and energy to write this book.

Another worthy edition to the OBE/LD literature
By alanl
I have read many books on this subject and my favourites span several different opinions on the phenomenon.

Stephen LaBerge takes the scientific approach, Robert Monroe takes a more modern approach and Robert Bruce, Sylvan Muldoon and others take a more spiritual, esoteric approach.

Its clear from the book that Frederick prefers the modern approach from Robert Monroe but thankfully rather than just accept Monroes theories as the truth has found his own path and mind to trying to explain OBE's as well as offering what looks like as good a method as any (and one of the simplest!) to induce them. I look forward to trying it!

For readers that like lots of anecdotal experiences there are plenty here. Some reinforce a point while others are more ambigous (intentionally I think).

For anyone who has had OBE's or very lucid dreams sometimes things happen that are hard to explain and the author has had his fair share of those as well.

His descriptions of the various 'fields of consciousness' are better than many I've read (was never sure what the astral planes were) and his experiences on The Void are the best I've come across. Now I can see what he calls a 'panoramic view of consciousness' is what Robert Bruce and others call the sight of the astral plane 'structure' you arrive at.

Whats most refreshing is he looks at OBE's as travelling within consciousness (or psyche). As a fan of Carl Jung's work I can relate to this more than any other books on this subject.

I would recommend this book as a great entry book on the subject as well as one for well-read or experienced projectors as it does offer something different to everything else available.

Frederick has also answered some of my questions directly so was nice to be able to get clarification on a few things I was mulling over :-)

One final thing. I have had a recurring dream involving an unclean home aquarium with dying fish and algae-filled water etc (I used to keep fish and always made sure they were well cared for) and although I had an idea what the dream was saying I wasn't 100% sure. In this book he talks about 'semipermanent structures of the personal field' and his recurring experience of a neglected bird cage just confirmed this for me. A nice moment :-)

What is God Doing?, by Lance Lambert

Throughout the ages, God has been doing one thing which is all to do with His great purpose. As we survey the move of God throughout church history with its apparent ebb and flow, it becomes clear that not even the powers of hell can deter God from preparing the bride and building the eternal city. We today in the twenty first century are a continuation of that forward march and are not a separate entity from the church of previous centuries. Therefore by paying attention to what lies behind us as the people of God, we can be guarded from error and imbalance. Every successive move of God is like a mini Pentecost with the Spirit of God taking the initiative. Once that happens, it spreads like fire. However, within a generation man interferes by substituting his ideas, ways, and organization for the work of the Holy Spirit and once this departure occurs, the move dies. Nevertheless, what the Spirit of God produces in every move is never lost! Those materials—gold, precious stone and pearl—are deposited into eternity to produce the city of God, the bride of Christ. Therefore, we have every reason to be encouraged, for God Who has taken such care over His people and His work throughout the centuries, will complete what He has begun.

Great Read
By Steve Coplon
Great read to understand the common work of the Holy Spirit as Christ has been building His Church throughout the last two centuries. If a believer in Christ cannot answer the question, "What is God Doing?" from a heart of revelation - then, their lives may be being built on the wrong foundation.

The Exploits of the Incomparable Mulla Nasrudin, by Idries Shah

Mulla Nasrudin, the wise fool of Eastern folklore, holds a special place in Sufi studies. The Sufis, who believe that deep intuition is the only real guide to knowledge, use the humorous stories of Nasrudin's adventures almost like exercises in Eastern thought. The Sufis ask people to choose a few which especially appeal to them, and turn them over in their mind, making them their own. Sufi teaching masters say that in this way a breakthrough into a higher wisdom can be effected. A single story can work on many levels, from great humor to initiating profound thought. Idries Shah's collection of Nasrudin tales is an excellent introduction to Sufi thought and Eastern philosophy.

COOKING BY CANDLE
Nasrudin made a wager that he could spend a night on a near-by mountain and survive, in spite of ice and snow. Several wags in the teahouse agreed to adjudicate.

Nasrudin took a book and a candle and sat through the coldest night he had ever known. In the morning, half-dead, he claimed his money.

"Did you have nothing at all to keep you warm?" asked the villagers.

"Nothing."

"Not even a candle?"

"Yes, I had a candle."

"Then the bet is off."

Nasrudin did not argue.

Some months later he invited the same people to a feast at his house. They sat down in his reception room, waiting for the food. Hours passed.

They started to mutter about food.

"Let's go and see how it is getting on," said Nasrudin.

Everyone trooped into the kitchen. They found an enormous pot of water, under which a candle was burning. The water was not even tepid.

"It is not ready yet," said the Mulla. "I don't know why - it has been there since yesterday."

THE SHORT CUT
Walking home one wonderful morning, Nasrudin thought that it would be a good idea to take a short cut through the woods. "Why", he asked himself; "should I plod along a dusty road when I could be communing with Nature, listening to the birds and looking at the flowers? This is indeed a day of days; a day for fortunate pursuits!"

So saying, he launched himself into the greenery. He had not gone very far, however, when he fell into a pit, where he lay reflecting.

"It is not such a fortunate day, after all," he meditated; "in fact it is just as well that I took this short cut. If things like this can happen in a beautiful setting like this, what might not have befallen me on that nasty highway?"

Much more than entertainment
By Dan Sperling
Each one of Idries Shah's three delightful Nasrudin books - The Pleasantries of the Incredible Mulla Nasrudin, the Exploits of the Incomparable Mulla Nasrudin and the Subtleties of the Inimitable Mulla Nasrudin - is not only the perfect gift for any thinking person with a sense of humor, but also a fitting antidote to the stress, pressure and confusion of modern life. For beyond the laughter lie deeper levels of meaning that reveal themselves at their own pace and can help broaden our perception and increase our understanding. The bite-sized jokes center around Mulla Nasrudin, an age-old Middle Eastern teaching figure whose antics mirror those of the human mind as he juggles the roles of wise man, fool and our own self. Calling these jokes "perfectly designed models for isolating and holding distortions of the mind which so often pass for reasonable behavior," author Idries Shah noted that they have been used for centuries by the Sufis as teaching exercises. Other specialists - from physicists to psychologists - have employed them to illustrate concepts that defy more straightforward explanations. I've not seen anything like them anywhere else.

Humour and Higher Wisdom
By Kevan
The first volume of the Mulla Nasrudin Corpus, retold by Afghan author Idries Shah, is a great introduction to the use of humour by the Middle Eastern and Central Asian sages called the Sufis. Nasrudin is a "wise fool" teaching-figure: sometimes acting as a guide, sometimes exhibiting shortcomings in the mind by his hilariously "brain-dead" behaviour. Nasrudin stories have been told and enjoyed across Asia, North Africa, and Southeastern Europe for centuries (and at least one collection was published in Britain in the mid-nineteenth century). The Sufis reportedly use the tales almost as exercises. "They ask people to choose a few which especially appeal to them, and to turn them over in the mind, making them their own. Teaching masters of the dervishes say that in this way a breakthrough into a higher wisdom can be effected." In addition, the stories are vividly and beautifully told. The delightful tale "His Excellency" is alone worth the price of admission. This is a new edition of the tales, released May 1, 2015 by ISF Publishing.

EXTENDED REVIEW:

This book presents many comic illustrations to help us see how the mind works, and how it can potentially work.

As with other books of Idries Shah's, a review can at best give only a slight indication of the volume's content. Nothing can replace the piquant experience of "tasting" these jokes and tales for yourself.

Here are a few:

"See what I mean?"

Nasrudin was throwing handfuls of crumbs around his house.
'What are you doing?' someone asked him.
'Keeping the tigers away.'
'But there are no tigers in these parts.'
'That's right. Effective, isn't it?'

"There is more Light here"

Someone saw Nasrudin searching for something on the ground.
'What have you lost, Mulla?' he asked. 'My key,' said the Mulla. So they both went down on their knees and looked for it.
After a time the other man asked: 'Where exactly did you drop it?'
'In my own house.'
'Then why are you looking here?'
'There is more light here than inside my own house.'

"Only one thing wrong with it"

Walking with a disciple one day, Mulla Nasrudin saw for the first time in his life a beautiful lakeland scene.
'What a delight!' he exclaimed. 'But if only, if only...'
'If only what, Master?'
'If only they had not put water into it!'

Some of the anecdotes are sidesplittingly funny: like "The Robe," or certain passages in "His Excellency," or "Cut down on your Harness Intake." Each of the stories appear to have a number of dimensions -- different dimensions seem to become clearer with thought, time, experience, and repeated re-readings.

The book, by using this type of tale, seems to communicate its content in a minimally indoctrinational manner. We are not conditioned to be somehow like Nasrudin; but we are given many perspectives that can help us in different situations, as well as being given, almost by the way, a great deal of information (rather than persuasion).

"First Things first" is well worth spending some time reflecting upon. Its content seems to include important lessons about how to learn. "Letter of the Law" beautifully illustrates the rationalizing mind at work (among other things). "Every little helps" points up the ridiculous (and potentially harmful) situations that ensue when we miss essential elements in a happening.

A secondary point, but one perhaps worth mentioning, is Shah's sheer skill as a word-artist. Like an adept cartoonist, he can evoke a whole scene with great economy:

"What has gone before..."

In a dark alleyway an agile pickpocket tried to snatch Nasrudin's purse. The Mulla was too quick for him, and there was a violent struggle. Eventually Nasrudin got his man down on the ground.
At this moment a charitable woman passing called out:
'You bully! Let that little man get up, and give him a chance.'
'Madam,' panted Nasrudin, ''you ignore the trouble which I have had getting him down.'

This would appear to be the product of a long, well-honed storytelling tradition.

Repeatedly, Nasrudin emphasizes the value of RELEVANT learning:

"Never know when it might come in useful"

Nasrudin sometimes took people for trips in his boat. One day a fussy pedagogue hired him to ferry him across a very wide river.
As soon as they were afloat the scholar asked whether it was going to be rough.
'Don't ask me nothing about it,' said Nasrudin.
'Have you never studied grammar?'
'No,' said the Mulla.
'In that case, half your life has been wasted.'
The Mulla said nothing.
Soon a terrible storm blew up. The Mulla's crazy cockleshell was filling with water.
He leaned over towards his companion.
'Have you ever learnt to swim?'
'No,' said the pedant.
'In that case, schoolmaster, ALL your life is lost, for we are sinking.'

Nasrudin seems to provide glimpses of another plane of existence (which nonetheless seems intimately interwoven with our familiar one). The tales seem to help us to learn something about it. But if the Mulla does so, he does it in a way that keeps us usefully tied to our ordinary life, which we are not allowed to forget. Indeed there seems a very adult awareness of the world that goes along with the comedy, as in "Cooking by Candle," or

"Salt is not Wool"

One day the Mulla was taking a donkey-load of salt to market, and drove the ass through a stream. The salt was dissolved. The Mulla was angry at the loss of his load. The ass was frisky with relief.
Next time he passed that way he had a load of wool. After the animal had passed through the stream, the wool was thoroughly soaked, and very heavy. The donkey staggered under the soggy load.
'Ha!' shouted the Mulla, 'you thought you would get off lightly every[italicized] time you went through the water, didn't you?'

A clear awareness of our sometimes harsh ordinary life seems to be one of the things exhibited in such tales as "Fear" or "The Pace of Life."

So in this sense Nasrudin is not fantasy, certainly not escapism -- unless it is to escape from the ridiculousness of what we take to be life. Sometimes the ridiculousness of our conventional approaches is shown up (as in "How Nasrudin created Truth," "The Rope and the Sky," or "Every little helps," already mentioned); sometimes the Mulla, operating on this other plane, seems ridiculous to the conventionally-minded (as in "Back to Front" or "I know her best").

We often see Nasrudin taking advantage of unfamiliar patterns and relationships:

"Sleep is an Activity"

Nasrudin wanted to steal some fruit from a stall, but the stallholder had a fox which kept watch. He overheard the man say to his fox[,] 'Foxes are craftier than dogs, and I want you to guard the stall with cunning. There are always thieves about. When you see anyone doing anything, ask yourself why he is doing it, and whether it can be related to the security of the stall.'
When the man had gone away, the fox came to the front of the stall and looked at Nasrudin lurking on a lawn opposite. Nasrudin at once lay down and closed his eyes. The fox thought, 'Sleeping is not doing [ital.] anything.'
As he watched Nasrudin he too began to feel tired. He lay down and went to sleep.
Then Nasrudin crept past him and stole some fruit.

Read and enjoy this book, for a taste of the incomparable Mulla Nasrudin.

Incomparably True
By R.S.
I'm guessing but I think that Shah would've approved of his work being available to readers via various contemporary means; book, e-book, and now audio book. It seems to fit with the 'scatter', or 'shotgun' approach to the dissemination of ideas, which he occasionally mentioned.

His notes on the nature of the tales, their potential diversity in application to thought and life, supply a manner of engaging with them that is much more fruitful than the automatic assumption that they are merely amusing stories from the mysterious East.

Another excellent work from Scotland's finest thinker.

The Pope's Dilemma: Pius XII Faces Atrocities and Genocide in the Second World War (German and European Studies), by Jacques Kornberg

Pope Pius XII presided over the Catholic Church during one of the most challenging moments in its history. Elected in early 1939, Pius XII spoke out against war and destruction, but his refusal to condemn Nazi Germany and its allies for mass atrocities and genocide remains controversial almost seventy years after the end of the Second World War.

Scholars have blamed Pius’s inaction on anti-communism, antisemitism, a special emotional bond with Germany, or a preference for fascist authoritarianism. Delving deep into Catholic theology and ecclesiology, Jacques Kornberg argues instead that what drove Pius XII was the belief that his highest priority must be to preserve the authority of the Church and the access to salvation that it provided.

In The Pope’s Dilemma, Kornberg uses the examples of Pius XII’s immediate predecessors Benedict XV and the Armenian genocide and Pius XI and Fascist Italy, as well as case studies of Pius XII’s wartime policies towards five Catholic countries (Croatia, France, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia), to demonstrate the consistency with which Pius XII and the Vatican avoided confronting the perpetrators of atrocities and strove to keep Catholics within the Church. By this measure, Pius XII did not betray, but fulfilled his papal role.

A meticulous and careful analysis of the career of the twentieth century’s most controversial pope, The Pope’s Dilemma is an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the Catholic Church’s wartime legacy.

Review

“Kornberg, professor emeritus of history at the University of Toronto, has given us an original and balanced analysis of Pius XII’s moral leadership that is as compelling as a novel. It will inspire much thought about dilemmas of church-state conflicts that we face in our increasingly war-struck world.”

(Nancy L. Roberts Catholic News Service, October 12, 2015)

‘Upon reading Kornberg’s record of Pius XII’s response to German genocidal acts, one understands Francis’s logic in terms clear and astonishing.’

(Norman Ravvin The Canadian Jewish News, January 4, 2016)

‘Kornberg’s work represents a monumental compilation of materials, both primary and secondary sources, reflecting a lifetime of study on the role that organized religion plays in our world.’

(Beth A. Griech-Polelle Contemporary Church History Quarterly vol 21:04:2015)

‘This is a well-researched, meticulously argued scholarly treatment of Pius XII’s wartime legacy.’

(J.P. Blosser Choice Magazine vol 53:03:2015)

Review

“In a book that reads like an exciting detective thriller, Jacques Kornberg examines Pope Pius XII and the Nazi regime of terror in Europe. Did the Pope resist the Nazis or acquiesce by failing to protest loudly and clearly? Could he have done more to rescue the Jews of Europe who begged him for his assistance? Why has world opinion shifted from praising Pius in the post–Second World War years to excoriating him, starting in the 1960s? Kornberg’s book leads us through the maze of evidence with remarkable clarity and intellectual suspense.”

(Susannah Heschel, Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies, Dartmouth College, and author of 'The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany')

“For many years, historians have awaited the opening of the Vatican’s archives for the reign of Pope Pius XII, unsure how the documentation therein will challenge our interpretations of the wartime church. Until that day arrives, Jacques Kornberg’s magisterial survey, written in distinguished and elegant language, provides a valuable analysis of the numerous conflicting theories about Pius XII and his policies that have appeared over the course of the past fifty years.”

(John S. Conway, Professor Emeritus of History, University of British Columbia, and author of 'The Nazi Persecution of the Churches, 1933-1945')

“The Pope’s Dilemma is a serious accomplishment by a historian who has spent years studying Pius XII in great depth. Jacques Kornberg has a fine grasp of the theology of the period and has truly incorporated it into his attempt to understand the choices Pius XII made during the Holocaust.”

(Kevin P. Spicer, C.S.C, James J. Kenneally Distinguished Professor of History, Stonehill College, and author of 'Hitler's Priests: Catholic Clergy and National Socialism')

Preservation of Church or Saving People?
By Earl
Prior to reading this book my opinions about the actions, or inaction, of the Catholic Church and Pope Pius XII was based only on considerations of what I perceive to be moral or ethical duties of any human being. This work has given me a better and considerably more nuanced perspective on how decisions were seemingly reached in the Vatican. I can't say it changed my personal assessment of right and wrong as it applies to this period but it absolutely gave me a better understanding of some kind of rationale.

The book is a very engrossing and worthwhile read for anyone with an interest in World War II and/or the Holocaust. Kornberg's writing made me stay up late reading, which I don't often experience with a history book. Perhaps the most valuable take away for me was the glimpse at what is important at that level of the Church when faith and universality are challenged by concrete events which threaten to potentially weaken the Church and its perceived place in this world.

Most Important Study of Pius XII in a Generation.
By robert f.melson
This is the most important study of Pius XII in a generation. Kornberg shows in meticulous detail that when confronted with Nazism, the Pope believed that he was forced to choose between helping to save lives or of preserving the Church. He chose the Church.

Sins of the Fathers
By L. King
A detailed exploration of the motivations and culpability of the Papacy and the Church in not speaking out against Nazi atrocities. Kornberg follows the arc of Pius XII's career from papal nuncio in Germany from the end of WW I until 1930 and his leadership as Vatican Secretary of State during the 1930s including his role along with that of Pius XI in the 1933 Concordat with the Nazis which preserved Church interests and went with the flow of Catholic sentiments in Germany which were anti-Communist, as was the Church, and largely sympathetic with the regime. This meant going with the flow and not opposing government policies. This same policy is repeated on a country by country basis across Europe both before and during the war.

Kornberg shows that this approach was similar to Church policy during the lesser known genocide and ethnic cleansing of 650,000 Eastern Orthodox Croatian Serbs (350,000 massacred, 300,000 forced to flee as refugees) by Catholic Croats which took place in 1941 independent of Nazi involvement. Papal envoy Cardinal Marcone represented the views of the Church, that Eastern Orthodox Christians were Byzantine schizmatics in “need” of return to the true faith. Jews fared no better so than by the end of 1941 only 12,000 out of a previous population of 40,000 Jews survived. The Croatian Catholic government proclaimed a number of Nuremberg style laws, forcing Jews into ghettos, banning them from public life, and forcing the sale of Jewish homes and business. Marcone believed, supported by Archbishop Stepinac, that this would bring the Jews to the Church out of a sense of self preservation, and while they might lack sincerity to the faith, “at least their children will be educated in Catholic schools and therefore be more sincerely Christian.” (p89).

The next to last chapter considers Vatican neutrality and moral equivocation of Pius's predecessors, Benedict XV and Pius XI, with 4 examples – the German occupation of Belgium in WW I, the Armenian Genocide, French and Belgian occupation of the Ruhr in 1923 and the 1935 invasion of Ethiopia. Benedict saw his role as that of a shepherd guiding Catholics as individuals towards a path to eternal life. His December 4, 1916 speech generically addressed the horrors of war, and might equally have applied to German atrocities in Belgium, the ethnic cleansing of 3 million Latvians, Jews and Poles to the Far East by Tsarist Russia or the attacks against Armenians and Greeks in the Ottoman Empire. Led by Cardinal Mercier, Church leaders in Belgium issued a strong condemnation against Germany's unprovoked and vicious attacks, blaming German Catholics for their support and participation. Benedict urged the German bishops not to reply and thanked Mercier for “calming Belgian Catholics and advising that 'there is nothing further to be done.' “ (p195). As for the Armenians, in response to learning from Monsignor Angelo Dolci that close to 1 million Armenians had been murdered, Benedict sent a strongly worded PRIVATE letter to the Sultan condemning the attacks and asking that they be ended. The letter likely never arrived and the Sultan was not even the right address to send the letter as the Ottoman Empire was then firmly in control of the CUP and the triumvirate of Enver, Cemal and Talat Pasha. Thinking in geopolitical terms, the Ottomans held access to Church property in Palestine and served as a bulwark against Tsarist ambitions in the Balkans. Benedict endorsed Turkish propaganda by wishing the Sultan long life and asked that only the guilty among the Armenians be punished and the innocents be spared.

In the case of French occupation, Pius XI did speak out, but was soundly rebuked by French Catholics who called him “the Boche pope”, and French nationalist emphasized the necessary separateness of church and state. Opposition to Mussolini's fascism, considering that Vatican City is part of Rome, literally hit closer to home. The Church and Italy's fascist movement were already on a collision course that Pius had to tread carefully. Ethiopia's Hailie Selassie allowed Catholic missionaries to operate freely in the country and Mussolini's pursuit of colonial empire threatened any balance of good will that Ethiopians had towards the Church. Pius conditionally recognized that Italian expansionism might have moral justification and chose not to mention Mussolini's use of mustard gas which killed a then estimated quarter of a million people. [More modern estimates a between 350,000 and 760,000.] And while Piux XI favoured the British and French proposals for partitioning Ethiopia which gave Italy most of the country along with a number of economic concessions, he also took care not to risk offending Catholic Italian nationalists. However in July 1938 the Italian Fascists published their “Manifesto on Race” which divided the world racially into superior Aryan races such as the Italians, and lesser races such as the Jews. This the Pope soundly denounced, declaring it as a form of apostasy.

In many respects this book complements another recent book by Colin Barnes, lecturer at King's Divinity College, England. Barnes, who includes Protestant as well as Catholic reactions also notices that the churches were most concerned about protecting Christians of Jewish ancestry and both, with some exceptions had problems with conversions that were motivated by self preservation as opposed to sincere Christian belief. The immoral distinction that both churches made was, though they were opposed to the biological racism of Nazi policy and found Nazi brutality unappealing though tolerable, they were not opposed to Nazi policy on the exclusion and destruction of Jews and the Jewish community on a religious basis. As we saw in the cases of Belgium, the Armenians and Croatia, the Popes of the first part of the 20th century believed that purpose of the Church was to preserve itself so that it could save Catholic souls, not human lives.
