The seven keys that Donna suggests and explains is so intuitive. I feel like I am at the coffee shop or sitting on the sofa with a cup of coffee and Donna is personally providing me with much needed insight. We get distracted in what society deems as thriving. We judge and compare ourselves to others which is not the key to thriving and this book brings out how we can develop inner direction. It will not only remind you what choices you are making; it has valuable exercises at the end of each chapter that are tried and true. The seven keys: trust, humility, resilience, inner direction, vision, expansiveness and responsibility piqued my curiosity as to how these virtues would help me to thrive. I now know and you will have to read the book yourself to find out. I sent this book to my daughter. She is finishing up her PhD at Washington University. She loved it and it brought her back to reality from the academic bubble. Read it. You won't regret it!

Deep, compassionate and practical. Beautiful.

Soulful and wise. Excellence-focused. Practical. These are words we might not find in a complete combination with most books. Oftentimes we find deeply soulful books that are more about stirring our hearts but don't offer a clear path to development and growth. Or we can find practical self-help books that are all about quick tips and tricks but don't have a lot of "heart" to them.

"Thriver's Edge" strikes a beautiful and rare balance among books that inspire our growth. It's is a fine book written by a coach, and Stoneham's unusual depth and practical come through strongly here. There are great stories coupled with powerful questions that I felt very drawn to answer and savor in the manner that the author suggests - slowly over time.

This book also draws comparison to some other wonderful developmental works. That includes: the human potential classic, "Mastery", by George Leonard; "Broken Open", by Elizabeth Lesser; and the lesser-known, "St. Benedict on the Freeway", by Corinne Ware.

The latter book is quite spiritual, and I reference that intentionally. Stoneham draws from the Jonah fable from the Bible, and it really works to outline the psychological challenges we all face in adult development - whether you are a practicing Christian or Jew or not. Her experience as a spiritual director is clearly evidenced in the deft way she draws from spiritual traditions both East and West.

If you want quick fixes this is not the book for you.

Thriver's Edge is highly recommended for those of you who want some sage advice from a master guide as you walk your journey toward mature growth.

Practical and powerful

Donna Stoneham's inspiring book The Thriver's Edge will take you on a transformational journey. It is full of moving personal stories and stories of others that demonstrate what it means to live a purposeful and meaningful life. Donna Stoneham defines thriving as "our capacity to unleash our power to grow, flourish and experience a sense of trust and well-being in ourselves, our work and our lives so that we may offer our greatest talents and capabilities to the world while helping others do the same." I found each chapter helpful in offering powerful tools and practices to do just this. It's a book to be read again and again.

Living the Japanese Arts & Ways is out of print, but the entire book is now offered in The Japanese Way of the Artist (Stone Bridge Press). What's more, you'll also get two of my other out of print titles: Brush Meditation and The Japanese Way of the Flower.

Shodo (“the "Way of Japanese calligraphy"), budo (the "martial Way"), and kado (the "Way of flower arrangement") are just some of the numerous Japanese arts ending in “Do,” indicating “the Way.” Nonetheless, how these arts function as Ways isn’'t always understood.

It’'s common to state that these various disciplines represent a Way of life (thus the designation “Do”), and that by practicing, we can transcend them and grasp the art of living. While this is true, it’'s uncommon to find a teacher (or book) that can explain how such Do forms lead to spiritual realization. While some books pay lip service to the ideal of the Way producing spiritual evolution, they also sometimes fail to offer direct explanations and methodologies to help students realize the Way. It’'s frequently assumed that merely manipulating a brush or throwing an opponent will produce profound realizations.
 
This is untrue and unfortunate. It'’s untrue because it’'s the manner in which we approach the Ways that determines what we learn from them. Spiritual realization isn’t guaranteed.

It’'s unfortunate because the conscious practice of Japanese Do forms truly can result in the cultivation of mind and body. But to use them as meditation, we must investigate exactly how they can lead to realization.

Japanese calligraphy, flower arrangement, tea ceremony, martial arts, and other Do has been the subject of numerous books. Few of these works, however, have explored how they go beyond art and enter into spirituality. Even fewer have offered methods to practice what can be thought of as “"moving meditation,”" and which are needed for personal growth to take place.
 
My book was written to answer that need, and I'm grateful for the kind reviews as well as the positive worldwide response.

An excellent resource for several Japanese art forms

As a direct student of the author for several years, I can say without hesitation that this book is a must-read for anyone interested in traditional Japanese cultural arts. All of H.E. Davey's works are well written and include numerous drawings and photos for easier comprehension of the presented techniques, but the real beauty of the texts is that they demystify these foreign art forms. Understanding such art forms can be a real challenge without the right resources, but this book makes it simple with clear explanations and easy-to-practice techniques. The best part about this book though, is that it's three books in one:

1) "Brush Meditation" (An introduction to Japanese calligraphy)
2) "The Japanese Way of the Flower" (A guide to Ikebana flower arrangement)
3) "Living the Japanese Arts & Ways" (Methods for reaching your full potential in life)

Even if you're not directly interested in calligraphy or flower arrangement, anyone and everyone can benefit from increased relaxation, concentration, and coordination imparted by the various concepts in "Living the Japanese Arts and Ways." All in all, this is an excellent resource for several different Japanese cultural arts, and with three books wrapped into one, it's a real bargain too.

H.E.Davey s book "The Japanese Way of the Artist" is simply perfect for those who are interested in any kind of Japanese Art.The language of the book , gives the reader the feeling of talking face- to face with H.E.Davey Sensei .In fact, while dealing with deep philosophical concepts creating such effect on the reader , shows us how H.E.Davey Sensei understood perfectly The Way and carried this philosophy to his whole life.Being a middle age Turkish woman who is practising different type of japanese Do arts for more then 15 years, I found the answers to many questions in my mind about Do philosophy , in this book.The whole terminology about Japanese Way is given very simply one by one sometimes enriched with famous poet Basho s Haikus , sometimes with pictures and also with their original japanese names .I think that H.E.Davey , sharing his knowledge in this book,gave the opportunity for understanding "Do" ,The Way very clearly ,to all of us.I want to thank him again.

Amazing testimony of how to put our faith and trust in God into action!

After having read this book, I realized that it had come into my possession as an answer to personal prayer. Strangely enough, this is a time in my life when, I am also going through many of the similar struggles which Bette and Wayne were faced with. I appreciate the fact that they were very honest and candid about how they applied their practical and living faith to many of the trials they encountered.

Although I have the faith, yet how do I incorporate that faith into finding solutions to everyday dilemmas? How can I turn my faith and trust in God into a living and vibrant walk with Him? Can I keep my intimacy with God alive regardless of what difficulties may lie ahead? This book vividly portrays how simple child like faith and trust in God can produce miracles in our daily lives! God does indeed desire to become involved even in our most trivial affairs. Thank you, Bette and Wayne for reminding me of the fact that I also needed to strengthen my walk with the Lord by putting into practice my own sincere and child like faith!

I took a joy ride with Bette and Wayne and travelled with them on a road searching for God's perfect path. After many sharp turns in their lives I found that their road has been much the same for myself and other's I've known. This perfect little book is truly a page-turner in their quest to follow God's direction with faith and determination. A must read for those who may have lost their way and are looking for God's guidance in life. Thank you Bette and Wayne for sharing an amazing lifetime of up's and down's similar to all, yet, only your to tell.

I have known the authors for several years. You will be amazed as you read Wayne and Bette's life story. Central to their story is how they had repeated evidences of God's power and leading, including numerous times where God's solution would come into play in a way that would not have been possible without God's miracles. Though Wayne's bipolar disorder resulted in increasing complications in their lives, God even helped them find their way through in spite of his illness.

About the Author

John Sandford graduated from theological seminary with an M.Div. in religion. He pastored churches for twenty-one years before founding Elijah House. Paula Sandford was active in the churches in music and Christian education and also taught English and Spanish in the public high school for several years. She joined her husband in the team ministry of Elijah House from its beginning and was ordained in 1995. They are considered pioneers in the prophetic and healing movements of our day. They have been married since 1951, have six children, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A peek into the backstage of a prophet's life

Pain, trial and persecution are normal process encountered while growing in the prophetic. Times twice of that defines the preparation process one needs to go through when one grows in the office of a prophet.
John Sanford is definitely a season prophet. However he has not graduated from the School of the Holy Spirit. It takes patience to learn all of God's ways. In "Elijah Task", John described how he and his wife has to go through some of the most severe testing while being trained to be a prophet. When you recognized your calling as a prophet, cutting corners is never the chosen path. From John's experience, prophets are at the peak of their training during the trough of their lives. In other words, the making of a prophet's ministry usually take place in the darkest moment of his life. The end result God desires is humility and brokenness. Only then He can use His prophets to complete His divine task.
Today John Sanford's ministry has proven to be a great contribution to the Body of Christ in the area of counseling and healing. This book is an expression of his priceless experience. I believe the insightful teachings provided here are very essential materials to emerging prophets of our time. John has made us aware that operating in the prophetic realm can be a dangerous playground. He made it plain to us that it takes integrity and wisdom when prophets handle their gifting.
In one of the chapter, John also mentioned that God occasionally allow His prophets to miss the mark. This is necessary in order to deflate any form of pride that may arise in the ministry.
This book is a must if you are serious about letting God to shape your life as a prophet or a prophetic person.

Prayer Dynamics

I have finally read this book and am satisfied. John Sandford is a true prophet of God and explains intercession well, dramatically highlighting its dynamics. No person who is unfamiliar with the depths of prayer or is unaccustomed to charismata can simply pick up, read, and expect to understand. It really is heavy stuff. But there is no person who might not be made to consider whether the prophetic is real after reading. Sandford has done a great job, too, in providing a manual on God's purpose for prophets and intercessors and the communication languages of God, like dreams and vision and what they mean. The only negative to the book is that Sandford's writing can be hard to endure and understand. Also, at times he states things that seem to go too far as it concerns orthodoxy. All in all, the book is a "next level" book for persons who want the depths of prayer and for those who might feel called to the prophetic.

This book is aimed at those who feel that God has called them to hear his voice, to walk with a prophetic annointing. The Bible encourages us to "eagerly desire the gift of prophesy", and anyone who has experienced or heard testimony of the power of this spiritual gift -- to make God real to people in this world and to address the underlying spiritual realities of the world through the ministry of prayer -- should make this book a number one priority.
John Sandford writes not from an academic view, but from the point of view of someone who has clearly been called to a prophetic ministry. The message of the book is that clarity costs, and the process of reaching it is often messy. But, oh, the blessings it releases!
Far from the Hollywood personification of Biblical prophets as heroic figures, Sandford lifts up a corner of Christian life to uncover a reality that is very quiet, very real, and very necessary for our times.
If you're a Christian and you've received revelation -- visions, dreams, and words of knowledge and wisdom -- that leave you confused but hungering for more of the reality of God's voice, this book will do a lot for you.

does a wonderful job of simply laying out the facts

Brittany, again, does a wonderful job of simply laying out the facts. It's unfortunate that the tone of IC is so negative on the internet. I am deeply grateful for western medicine but unfortunately IC is a disease that you must approach holistically - there is no magic pill. Western medicine cannot help you for this "chronic disease" and Brittney, like many other natraupathic advocates, lay out exactly how to do that through nutrition, ph balance (specifically the importance of alkalinity), yeast control, exercise, gut healing, mentality/meditation and allergies. Anyone, myself included, who has truly healed from IC and has taken this route of self discovery, open mindedness, strong desire to get better, drastic lifestyle changes and MANY ups and downs. But it is worth it, you will get there eventually! Brittany is not only hopeful and encouraging in her book but extremely knowledgable and good at relaying the information. I urge you to give her youtube videos a listen and read her book. There is hope, IC IS curable and you WILL get your life back. Your body knows how to heal itself, you just need to provide it with what it needs.

Not bad! Most of it I already knew thanks to Laura L. From healing your vulvadynia naturally- in which she gives you her e book free. But I respect Brittany for her healing journey and what she's been through. I'm following a more alkaline diet by eating more veggies rather than eating fruit which is a weak acid. Overall, this book gives a foundation to maintain your health and achieve better health!

Waste of money if you've got interstitial cystitis

I've got interstitial cystitis and it's a very serious medical condition. I think this book offers nothing truly useful for healing this condition at all (other than basic diet changes). She focuses on emotional healing, detox and self love for much of the book. For anyone who has IC you'll probably know that being told to love yourself more is difficult to read when you're in pain...The recipes include known IC flare triggers (tomatoes and green apples) which in my view is dangerous. If you just want a book about healthy eating it might be okay - but I got nothing out of it that was new or helpful for healing my IC. If you've got IC - there's more accurate, research based free information from doctors and women who suffer from the condition at the interstitial cystitis network website ic-network.com - sorry this is such a negative review but I really feel like I wasted my money
