I have a better understanding of who I am now...
By Joshua Houghton
Over the years I’ve read a ton of motivational, spiritual and personal development books, but this is the first book I’ve read which connected with me on a very personal level. The last few years of my life hasn’t been easy to say the least. I’ve been having problems with my wife, my job and just feeling lost in general. I just feel lost if that makes any sense and I have for a really long time.

This feeling has led me down a few different paths and one of them was personal development and self help. I figured just because I didn’t have the answers it didn’t mean other didn’t. So I spent a really long time studying different authors and teachers over the years. In the beginning it was a great. I felt inspired and that I had a purpose only to have those feelings ripped out from under me over time.

The stuff I read was like a bandage. It was nothing more than a quick fix, but nothing meant for long term change. However, after reading Matt Sison’s book I had a huge revelation which has started to change the way I look at everything. I realized the only reason I haven’t found the answers I’ve been looking for and why I always feel lost is because I’ve never listened to the only voice that truly matters, mine!

I’ve always took the advice of others and made their voices mine instead of trusting mine own. Matt’s book, Life Is The Perfect System helped me to understand that I have to live up to my own standards and not what other people in my life expect of me. I have to stop following the voices of others and trust that my own voice, my life is leading me in the right direction and it is the perfect direction for me.

I was really surprised at how great this book is and I’m looking forward to reading it a second time thru and for the first time ever I’m looking forward to life because for the first time ever I feel I’m in control and can start to live it on my own terms.

I highly recommend giving this book a read and if your looking for answers, feeling lost or just want to have a better understanding of life then I think you’ll find this book inspiring and for some maybe even life altering. This isn’t a self help book in the traditional sense and it’s not a motivational book. It’s a book of lessons, a book of experiences that show that no matter what you’ve been going through that life is the perfect system for living a balanced and authethic life.

Emotion is just energy and how we process experience
By P. Yango
Finally, a self help book that gives you a technique that shows you how to let go. I've read so many authors that have expressed how important it is to forgive and let go but have never provided us with how to do that. Willpower has never been strong enough to reach the subconscious mind. It wasn't until I experienced this system myself did I realize that my "letting go" was being blocked by so many emotions that I had locked into my body from many traumatic experiences. So once I learned to listen to my body, "letting go" actually means releasing the emotion you have not allowed yourself to experience due to our conditioning about expressing emotion. In other words, I have swallowed many emotions because as a man I have been conditioned that its weak to feel them and makes you feel worse. So I hold them in my body and suppress them, leaving me a powder keg of suppressed energy. Matt's book and skill have allowed me to safely release this energy and return to more peace and balance.

I can't wait to share this information with others. Matt basically, neutralized how I feel about expressing emotion and made me understand that it was just energy that needs to move through you. So emotion is the way our mind, body and soul process experience. You experience something, have an emotion about it, then let it go. As a father with a three year old son, I notice how he uses this system with everything he experiences, He is not yet conditioned by myself or society's mores, so he uses this system to perfection and always returns to peace and balance. So the goal is to flow through life the same way we did as children, which is why we learned so much at those ages.

Matt's system has changed my life in that it has given me the space for clarity and accessing intuition. There is still more to learn but I now feel like I have a navigation system to get me there by listening to my body.

Amazing! A must read!
By jen
I purchased this book after having had several sessions with Matt a few years ago. I was quite elated when I discovered he had written a book. If you're expecting a typical self help book you won't find that here. This is an emotional and uplifting read! Not only does Matt share his own personal journey of self realization and fulfillment by way of a very dark and scary journey; but he also includes numerous stories of his clients that will no doubt inspire anyone!

I had contacted Matt a few years ago after dealing with some very debilitating health problems for years. We had many sessions via Skype (since we lived far apart) and those sessions brought me out of my "fog". I finally got in touch with my inner being and not just the surface of my emotions. We worked on the principal of SET (sensations, emotions and thoughts) as described in this book. With his help I was able to get my life back on track and my pain level went from a 10 to a 1 to 2 for the majority of days. Two years later, I am still living a happy and fulfilled and pretty much pain free life.

I highly recommend this book to anyone. Whether they are seeking help for health issues, emotional problems, relationships, career, spirituality or just wanting a great book to read. You will not be disappointed. I learned more from this book than from any self help book I have ever picked up. Life Is The Perfect System doesn't just tell you what you should be doing; it explains why things are the way they are in your life and how to listen to your thoughts, emotions and sensations and use them as a guide to move forward and heal!

You will not be disappointed in this terrific guide on how to live a more fulfilled life full of joy and happiness. It's a beautiful and inspiring book.

A Collection of Thoughts, Sayings and Meditations on the Way of the Samurai

"It is said that what is called "the spirit of an age" is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation." — Tsunetomo Yamamoto, Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai

A formerly secret text known only to the Samurai, Hagakure is a classic text on Bushido--the Way of the Warrior. More than just a handbook for battle, Hagakure is a text that filled with teachings that still apply in business, political and social situations today.
This Xist Classics edition has been professionally formatted for e-readers with a linked table of contents. This ebook also contains a bonus book club leadership guide and discussion questions. About the Author
Though Yamamoto Tsunetomo never fought in battles or dueled other warriors, he spent thirty years as a trusted and devoted retainer of Nabeshima Mitsushige, ruler of the Saga Prefecture of Japan. Before Mitsushiges death, he forbade his followers from committing ritualized suicide. The bereft Tsunetomo became, instead, a Zen monk who lived in semi-seclusion until his death.

Excellent Perspective on Samurai Bravery and Etiquette
By ADM
This book features sayings and anecdotes from an aging Samurai who died around 1700.
It is a quick and entertaining read, and offers great perspective both on the individual who wrote it, and on the general theory of being a samurai.
There is an obvious sense of loss in many of the passages which comment on how things in contemporary society (of the 1700s) are so different from years past. This book, intentionally or not, captures the spirit of those older days, and serves both as a manual for younger samurai, and as a historical document for people who are interested in "The Way of the Samurai" today.
In his excellent introduction, the translator makes the very relevant point that this book is not a rigorous philosophical treatise, at least not in the way that Western scholars would define it. Instead, it is a collection of stories and phrases about a certain way of living. It doesn't hold up to scientific cross-examination (the author contradicts himself frequently), but it shouldn't have to. Yamamoto gives the impression that if faced with a philosophical attack on his "way", he would shrug his shoulders and say, "Yes, but that doesn't change a thing." In other words, his examples and aphorisms speak for themselves, and are not meant to either exclude other points of view or force others into conformity. Yamamoto even states that the Way he advocates is specific to his region of Japan -- samurai of neighboring regions are free to develop their own Ways.
The passages in the book usually focus on one of two topics: bravery, or etiquette. Yamamoto offers a lot of advice on charging into battle, seeking revenge, executing others, etc. The main thrust of most of it is: the Samurai does not spend a lot of time thinking about killing his enemy. He just rushes in and gets it over with. On matters of etiquette, Yamamoto discusses the proper way to hold a Tea Ceremony, how to cover up a yawn, how to pay attention to people you are talking to, and so on. One of the charming aspects of this book is that right after discussing the swiftest way to cut off someone's head, he'll discuss how to make yourself look nice even if you have a hangover. This could be a result of the editing, but it still makes for entertaining reading.
The other theme that permeates almost every paragraph of the book is loyalty to one's master. Yamamoto never tires of discussing the extremes that a samurai should go to so that he may honor his master and show his loyalty. He gives the example of a samurai who was being beaten by his master: during the course of the beating, the master dropped his staff down a hill, so the samurai immediately ran down to retrieve it, and return the staff to his master so he could continue to be beaten. Of course, the ultimate act of loyalty to one's master is to kill oneself after his death. Yamamoto spends a great deal of time discussing various aspects of this tradition, and regrets that his own master forbade him to commit suicide in such a way.
The book reads very quickly (it took me about 4 hours), in part because it is organized into brief paragraphs and anecdotes (much like a book of sayings), and in part because the underlying material is almost inherently fascinating. It gives a very complete picture of the state of mind of an aging samurai, and depicts the world of the samurai as it existed in the 17th century.
The translation flows very well, though I cannot attest to its accuracy, and the translator includes a somewhat useful glossary in the back of the book, as well as the introduction which I mentioned. I should also mention, for the curious, that this is the translation that Jim Jarmusch used as the source of his aphorisms in the recent film "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai."

A historical, anecdotal glimpse into the Bushido mind.
By A Customer
Whether you find HAGAKURE of interest depends on your approach to the book. Although this is not a book of sword technique, it is much like a traditional sword
master, teaching only what the student is open enough to
know, and teaching on many levels. On one level, it is a book of eyewitness accounts and stories from the decline
of the Samurai era. Tsunetomo has a gift for storytelling,
and for slipping in little details that might be of use to
the aspiring Bushi. For example, do you know the quickest,
easiest way to remove a dead enemies' face from his skull?
He also gossips in an entertaining way about the lives of
various local notables. It is as if you are having dinner with a slighly cynical, retired Samurai, the saki is passed around, and he begins talking freely.

On another level the book adresses the questions of loyalty,
honor, and the meaning of life. It celebrates virtue and
valor, while avoiding the sugarcoating that such subjects
get in the west. Anyone who faces dangers and obstacles in their day to day walk will find this little book strangely
supportive. In this age where loyalty has a price, and
commitment is a meaningless word, the savage beauty and
strange purity of the Bushi mind, as revealed by Tsunetomo, can strengthen the heart, and recharge the mind.

IF YOU LIKE HAGAKURE, you should read:

ACTS OF WORSHIP, Yukio Mishima

Reveals the essence of Samurai thought.
By A Customer
HAGAKURE: The Book of the Samurai is a very interesting book which describes the everyday life and mindset of a samurai. For those that are not interested in the Samurai thought, this book may appear rather dry and in some instances, absurd. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The book is made up of short entries of various topics. Whether it's describing a wise samurai's actions, or cracking jokes at the noblemen around him, it is obvious that Yamamoto Tsunetomo was truly a samurai in every aspect of his life. During Yamamoto's time, the prestige of the samurai was declining, due to a long period of peace in Japan. The samurai lived to die for his lord in battle, but how can one remain a noble samurai during times of peace? Yamamoto answers this and many other questions in Hagakure. He also points out that when one is focused on dying, he will not be afraid in the presence of death. As Yamamoto liked to say, "The way of the Samurai is found in death."

Jewish Soul Food: Traditional Fare and What It Means, by Carol Ungar

Jewish traditional foods often have symbolic meanings. A Passover matzo is a taste of Egyptian slavery. The Hanukkah latke reminds us of the little jug of oil that burned, miraculously, for eight nights. Noshing hamentaschen at Purim, we remember the villain Haman, and his thwarted plan to destroy the Jews.

Even more than in the synagogue, Jewish life takes place around the dining table. Jewish sages compare the dining table to an altar, and that isn’t an exaggeration. Jewish meals are ceremonies and celebrations that forge a pathway between body and soul.

In this unique cookbook, Carol Ungar links the cultural and religious symbolism of Jewish foods to more than one hundred recipes drawn from international Jewish cultures and traditions. She offers easy-to-follow recipes for Shabbat meals and all the Jewish holidays, from Rosh Hashana to the nine days before Tisha b’Av, along with fascinating briefs on how many Jewish foods—challah, kreplach, farfel, and more—express core Jewish beliefs.

With ingredients that can be found in any supermarket, and recipes adapted for the time- and health-conscious cook, this volume is for anyone who wishes to flavor Shabbat and holiday meals with Jewish soul.

Review
“Alongside scores of delightful recipes, Carol Ungar brings to life the meaning and history behind well-known and more obscure Jewish dishes from across the centuries and shares recipes with the warmth and wisdom of the grandmothers she never knew.” —Jewish Herald Voice

“I found the balance of flavors in Ungar’s recipe to be perfect.” —Forward

"Carol Ungar didn’t design her Jewish Soul Food book as a cookbook in the strict, or even loose, sense of the term. Rather, she intended her book to be a sort of a survival guide for Jewish expats everywhere: It is not only a comprehensive compilation of dishes we Jews love to crave and wax nostalgic about, it is as importantly about the meaning and the mystique around them, what has immortalized those timeless dishes throughout our turbulent history, and what has made them survive.” —Levana’s Whole Foods Kitchen

"Even if you have cooked kosher all your life, no doubt you will find some interesting and tempting dishes that you have never tasted before.”—Jewish Connection

Review
“Carol Ungar gives us a rare combination: virtuoso writing, spiritual depth, authentic tradition, and delicious recipes. This book is a treat for body, mind, and soul.” (Sara Yoheved Rigler)

“Carol Ungar unveils the mystery of each food's mystical connotation, its deliberately designed purpose, and its relationship to specific holiday cuisine, raising our consciousness in such a way that eating becomes a much deeper, more spiritually fulfilling act.” (Yitta Halberstam)

Really Unique!

I must admit I never actually sat and read a cookbook cover to cover before this one. This little book is an intro to Judaism via food. It includes recipes from Jewish communities around the world, and the how, what and why of each dish. The writing style is engaging and recipes I have tried so far have been easy to follow and successful. The author has an incredible breadth of knowledge, a sense of humor and a huge variety of recipes! I'm sending a copy to my mom!

A whole Jewish education in a cookbook. And recipes too!
By rivkah30
I have a friend who worked as a food stylist. He taught me that the pictures of food you see in magazine ads, blogs, infomercials and cookbooks are professionally designed to look spectacular in photos. In real life, they are as likely as not to be inedible.

Photographs of cereal often use glue in place of milk. Sesame seed buns might have the sesame seeds placed individually, using a tweezer. Motor oil is sometimes used in place of pancake syrup and meat in ads is generally “cooked” with a blowtorch or hairdryer and then painted with shoe polish to give it the right color. These tricks are a small part of the clever art form known as food styling and it’s in evidence in many contemporary cookbooks, whose oversized, full color pictures on glossy paper have been referred to as food porn.

By contrast, the new cookbook Jewish Soul Food: Traditional Fare and What it Means by Carol Ungar, looks like a paperback novel that you’d bring on a beach vacation. It’s filled with hand-drawn illustrations and the photographs are black and white. At first glance, you might be tempted to dismiss this book as a low quality publication.

And that would be a mistake.

Instead of publishing yet another upscale cookbook, Ungar wrote a cookbook that could only be produced by a cross between a Jewish grandmother and an adult Jewish educator. By eschewing stylized, color photos and writing extensive descriptions about the background of why Jews eat what we eat when we eat it, Ungar connects her readers to Jewish history. One of Ungar’s themes is how the physical, spiritual and cultural aspects of Jewish life merge in food. Her understated, occasionally humorous prose reminds readers, and prospective Jewish cooks, that there’s cultural depth and a measure of Jewish literacy involved in making cabbage soup, teiglach and kreplach.

Ungar divides the book into three main sections, corresponding to times when Jews eat ceremonial foods – Shabbat, Jewish holidays and life cycle events. In the modest, 200-page book, she’s included well over 100 recipes. Ungar includes recipes (and explanations) for many familiar dishes like chopped liver and cucumber salad, and for not so familiar dishes, like etrog confit (a sweet-tart jam) and Ruota di Faraone (a meat and pasta casserole from Tuscany).

Even if you end up never taking a single pot out from the cabinet, reading Jewish Soul Food is like stepping into a complex, colorful Jewish cultural story. It’s a cookbook, yes. But it’s also a short course in adult Jewish literacy.

Oldies but greaties
By faigie horowitz
Reading Carol's book is like meeting an old "heimish" friend, someone you are comfortable with yet smart enough to surprise you again and again. Perusing the pages of these easy recipes is like a tasting in your grandmother's kitchen with some Asian, Sephardic, and fusion additions. It's traditional Jewish fare made simple with family additions, valuable tips, and sources. It's fun to learn about how some of our familiar foods evolved from Talmudic and geographic origins and to follow the diagrams for the multiple challa themes and variations. Some surprises included familiar names with unfamiliar recipes like Rabbi Freifeld's pickled herring; I pictured the jovial sage donning his apron and in a booming voice with his signature wit, concocting and directing preparation of a Shabbat delicacy.

Moving forward the book is a Biblical teaching written by Stephanie Ike that allows you to step out of stagnancy and move into purpose.I believe that it is a definite and must read for everyone.
I absolutely loved this book.
From the moment I began reading Moving Forward I was unable to put the book down until I read the last page the next morning .
It is filled with teachings on how to renew your faith and provided continuous divine confirmation, and understanding on the power we have over our purpose.
It not only equips you with each and every tool needed to discover your purpose but it also warns you of the stumbling blocks you may face along the road and then quietly guides you all the way to the finish line.
Moving forward taught me to abandon the role of victim completely and to put on the full Armour of God and step into victorious.
Each teaching in Moving Forward is richly soaked with just the right amount of scripture to support it and it assist with the understanding of each lesson. It is easy to have passion ,ambition and drive but in a world with so much to do and so little time, every day distractions both big and small , We find ourselves completely stagnant and distracted .
Moving Forward delivered a very clear and concise message .
My favorite teaching in Moving Forward is teaching number 1# Gods Purpose Involves Your Mistakes .this helped me understand that God can use all of me.
Moving forward is a masterpiece it defiantly meets the reader where you are no matter where you may be on your journey. Moving forward is life changing and has fully equipped me with the tools needed to move forward into my purpose in Jesus Christ.

Loved it…Loved it…Loved it
By Sheila G.
A truly gifted bible teacher, who brings humor, laughter, and extraordinary insight to the Word of God through his amazing ability to make complex issues easy to understand. He’s spot on with today’s verbiage in his teaching (and without compromise). He rightly upholds our Christian values, principles, and standards. In a comical sense, he packs a mean punch. Delivering his point with scripture references on every page. This work is instructional, practical, and worth reading more than once. I really enjoyed Chapters 14 & 15, lessons from Jehoshaphat’s life, on how to deal with daily problems, be they financial, relational or health. God’s word has the solution. The author spells out the ultimate formula for success. You will be blessed by this book. It will be especially helpful to those who are new to the faith, struggling in their faith, and those who need to be re-energized. Massive Success is a treasure I’ll refer to again and again. Highly Recommended!

A Good, Crisp Read
By Nick B.
I see "massive success" for Robert's bold and humorous book, encouraging the reader to grab and hold onto the promises of their faith. It's readable. It's laid out rather brilliantly, in attractive chunks of scripture combined with Robert's creative analysis. These pages are comfortable to look at, but the words can move the reader out of established comfort zones. A quick read, but a fulfilling one.

Review
Senior minister Schaper’s comprehensive book on death is based on her 40 years of counseling the dying and their families. She covers everything from the realization that one’s illness is incurable to the memorial service and presents positive suggestions for disclosing the imminent death to loved ones and how to prepare spiritually (not necessarily espousing religion) for the end. . . . VERDICT [The book is] . . . superb in discussing preparation for death. Approaching the End of Life supplies a blueprint [to prepare for death]. (Library Journal, Starred Review)

Over the course of her long ministry, Schaper has comforted the sick and dying, presided over many funerals and memorials, and counseled the bereaved. Drawing upon these many years of experience, her book offers sensitive advice about planning one’s own funeral or the funeral for a loved one. More important, her book encourages us to plan for a good death, which means living a good life. Everyone will die, and immortality remains an unresolved issue. Therefore, we need to find a place from which to die. Schaper argues that place is a spiritual home, one that gives our life meaning, joy, and purpose. Whether in a faith community, sacred space, or ritual, a spiritual home is a place where our faults and achievements are both recognized and affirmed. It is a place where we are comforted, challenged, and connected. It is a community of individuals, not an institution, amid whom we can die after having lived well. Reflecting upon one’s mortality is scary. Schaper’s thoughtful and helpful book eases the fear. (Booklist)

The Rev. Dr. Donna Schaper is the senior minister at Judson Memorial Church in New York City. This book is written to provide a spiritual and practical guide for lay people (both the dying person and/or their loved ones) about planning and organizing things to do with the end of life, and the funeral or memorial services that come afterwards. I liked her straightforward, conversational style, and the language was simple and understandable to the average person. Above all, whilst giving what is probably very good advice, I liked her celebration of individuality – no two patients (or two families) will have identical wishes and needs, and she gives permission for you to do exactly what you want or what you think is best. For those of us who work in palliative care, it is useful to know about books like this that you can recommend or loan to appropriate patients and/or their families. (IAHPC Newsletter)

Donna Schaper continually urges us to think long and broad about our life and death. From her expansive revision of the traditional funeral phrase, ‘Ashes to ashes, stardust to stardust,’ to her encouragement that we think of our lives as ceramic vessels for the Spirit and not throwaway plastic, she urges us to consider our life, death, and afterlife in the context of the ‘great awesome.’ Her mixture of practical advice on dying and funerals, as well as her theological reflections on the context of aging, death, and the afterlife, gives us much to chew on and live toward. (The Rev. Dr. Rochelle A. Stackhouse, senior pastor, The Church of the Redeemer, United Church of Christ, New Haven)

With fresh language and a helpful breadth of perspective, Rev. Donna Schaper has provided an invaluable tool for approaching the end of life, a must-read for clergy and highly accessible for laity. I will be looking forward to using Approaching the End of Life as a solid text on practical spirituality with adults in my parish. (Rev. Dr. Jill R. Edens, senior co-pastor, United Church of Chapel Hill)

Rev. Schaper does an excellent job of discussing a potentially difficult or challenging matter in an upfront, logical, and very caring way. I think everyone needs to read this book. (Scott Jurica, MS, DC, PAK, ACN; holistic doctor)

Approaching the end of life, complex emotion and mundane decisions collide. Grief mixes with mystery. Donna Schaper is a wise, experienced guide through the colliding, the grief, the mystery, and the intimacy of that tender time. She writes with the power of long experience and careful observation, sharing stories of approaching death well by living well. She writes with deep appreciation for people in and out of faith communities, giving all of us generous ways to honor the momentousness of dying. And she writes convincingly that the best moment to begin preparing for our inevitable end is right now, with close attention to the troubles and grace that make up both a good life and a holy death. (The Rev. Dr. John A. Nelson, pastor and teacher, Niantic Community Church)

Donna Schaper’s new book is the ideal vehicle for tackling an urgently essential teaching for our times. Who should read it? Pastors, old and new, who need new tools to help those knocking at their door without the culture of a congregation. Individuals who have managed to avoid the topic of mortality until an embarrassingly mature age who now must create something for themselves or a loved one. And even those of us professionals who have failed in our own lives to begin important processes like retirement planning or life review. She shows us that preparation for death can be a fulfilling and often joyful exercise of discovering value in our unique and communal identity. Read it. (Rev. Carrie Bail, interim pastor, First Congregational Church of East Longmeadow, MA)

This is a book for those who wish to embrace the end of life with open arms. May all our inevitable passings be filled with such powerful ministry! (Caroline Woolard, cofounder, OurGoods.org and TradeSchool.coop)

A litany of stories into the heart of grief and life. Schaper masterfully shapes the silences and mystery of a good death. She fingers the beats of scars, emptiness, the questions that all of us live with as we miss, celebrate, and are heartbroken and changed by the pregnant absences of our loved ones. A must-read for all who want to ritualized and face the death that comes to us all. (Juan Carlos Ruiz, Episcopal Diocese of Long Island)

Rev. Schaper has produced a book that is thoughtful and helpful for those who will open themselves to considering the part that death and dying play in living and life. Written mostly from a Christian perspective, it nevertheless has insights and refreshing, light, and honest views on approaching these issues that are applicable to all persons in every faith, and none. It removes a good deal of both the "ick" factor and the fear aspect, and is quite accessible. I recommend it to clergy, laity, students, chaplains, doctors, nurses, hospice workers, caregivers, thanatology professionals, and all who will allow themselves to engage with this important and meaningful aspect of the human condition. (Rabbi Joe Blair, Gamliel Institute of Kavod v’Nichum; Jewish Values Online; Bridgewater College)

Reading this book made me excited to live and die well! I am in my thirties and, technically, not approaching the end of life. However, Donna's perspective on ending life at a place of peace and composure makes the hard topic of death totally comfortable, accessible—and inspiring! I am already planning the best funeral ever and living life to the fullest so that when that funeral happens, it can truly be a celebration for all in attendance! (Carissa Reiniger, founder and CEO, Silver Lining, Ltd.)

While Schaper says this book is about ‘dying,’ it is just as much about living. The reader is encouraged to embrace death (and life!) with ‘spiritual honesty’ in the context of a postmodern, pluralistic twenty-first century. Her words have caused me to take pause and reflect upon how I am choosing to live each day in preparation for a wonder-full end, instead of an inevitable conclusion. I am filled with a profound sense of hope. I want all the people I love to read this book. (David R. Gaewski, conference minister, New York United Church of Christ)

Every time I thought I knew what was coming next in this book, something different happened. Something creative, attractive, disturbing, and delicious. The 'end' of life? Whether you are thinking 'purpose' or 'stop,' it’s a joyful education, like a dance, to not know what’s next. Like the substance of the book, so is its style. (Rabbi Arthur Waskow, author of The Tent of Abraham; director, The Shalom Center)

Approaching the End of Life is an indispensable guide on how to understand death and ritualized dying in our congregations, in our families, and as we approach our own mortality. Blending the pastoral and the practical, Rev. Dr. Schaper offers herself as a clear-eyed shepherd through the faith and folk traditions that surround death and dying in the twenty-first century. (The Rev. Dr. William Lupfer, rector, Trinity Wall Street)

In our death-defying culture, how welcome to have this new book that teaches us not only how to have a good death and playfully imagine the great mystery beyond, but also how to live the fullest life. Part Garrison Keillor, part Anne Lamott, Schaper leans into a decades-long ministry to share with us stories and deep truths that will make readers laugh and cry and think and feel their way to healing and wholeness. (The Rev. Dr. Katharine R. Henderson, president, Auburn Theological Seminary)

Donna Schaper writes about how we respond to death—our own and others—in ways that are both wise and practical. In so doing, she helps us engage the most important realities we will ever face and equips us to talk about them with those we love. (Martin B. Copenhaver, president, Andover Newton Theological School)

Donna Schaper looks squarely at the rich fullness of life without flinching—even when life’s last event inevitably arrives. This candid assessment of death and its leading days is an exercise of the deepest core values, she says. This courageous book, with its lively and intelligent tone, ingeniously loops back to how we live our lives now. What a freedom in that. (George E. Packard, retired bishop of the Episcopal Church)

In our life-obsessed culture where extending life at all costs—ethical or otherwise—is the norm, this book asks questions which take the reader against the tide: How to age gracefully? How to live a ‘death-aware life’? How to see our end as ‘stardust’? And how to reinterpret biblical metaphors for our time—a time which the author insists is scarce? (Adeel Khan, editor, Religions)

"Being Mortal" for spiritual people
By P. Mack
This is parallel to Atul Gawande's Being Mortal, only for people who take seriously the spiritual side of their lives. I wish there was an audio book read by the author--the style is very conversational and I think would good for listening. (Reading engages too much of my rational mind.) Some of the book is practical: thoughts on funerals and end of life choices. But much of it is a very open exploration of how having some beliefs (any beliefs) about what happens after death and what is the meaning of life will make the later stages of our lives and the dying process easier to face. How can we learn to embrace change as we get older, not resist it? The author is a pastor in the United Church of Christ but this book is very open to people of other beliefs.

Sometimes it has been so much worse than it had to be
By Andrew J. Chepaitis
This book is a rare book in that it subtly teaches how to live a full life while preparing for the end - our deaths, and the end of life of those around us. The book shares a reservoir of wisdom about living, and in doing so makes the subject matter personal, understandable, tangible. It is not simply a guide to planning for the end of life, but rather it is a tool through which one can think about one's thinking and adjust one's perspective and approach to the end of life. In the way that Thich Nhat Hanh's writings inform one's thinking, so does this book on this subject.

I don't have much experience with the end of life, or preparing for it. I've witnessed/experienced the end for a few people close to me, but that experience is so limited, compared to a person in Reverend Schaper's position. Sometimes it has been so much worse than it had to be. Through the book, she shares what she has seen work and not, on a practical level. And she shares her spiritual perspective in a way that respects the reader's inevitably unique view of religion, the afterlife (or lack thereof) etc..

The end of life can be awful. And there are so many ways that things can go wrong - in terms of bad or no planning, communications with a person dying, or even communications between family members. As Rev. Schaper states "there is no problem in this world that cannot be made worse." With so much possible tension surrounding the end of life, her tactful sensibility helps frame the subject, and hopefully helps us prepare in such a way that our energies are focused on those dynamics that are important to get right.

Practical (and funny) lessons for the End of Life.
By Zoe Logan
A thoughtful but actually funny look at how life ends - and is ending every day.
Rev. Schaper uses her wisdom and experience as a mindful and progressive member of her NYC community to reflect back on best practices for life and, by extension, death. These are practical lessons that are actionable at any time in a person's life - but totally essential before the end of it.

I appreciate this perspective as the child of aging parents and a resident of a mortal realm. Donna's writing is clever and clear and at times very funny. It brings very scary things into focus at a level that are relatable even if death is not a current presence in your life.

Anglican Enlightenment: Orientalism, Religion and Politics in England and its Empire, 1648-1715 (Cambridge Studies in Early Modern British

This is an original interpretation of the early European Enlightenment and the religious conflicts that rocked England and its empire under the later Stuarts. In a series of vignettes that move between Europe and North Africa, William J. Bulman shows that this period witnessed not a struggle for and against new ideas and greater freedoms, but a battle between several novel schemes for civil peace. Bulman considers anew the most apparently conservative force in post-Civil War English history: the conformist leadership of the Church of England. He demonstrates that the church's historical scholarship, social science, pastoral care and political practice amounted not to a culturally backward spectacle of intolerance, but to a campaign for stability drawn from the frontiers of erudition and globalization. In seeking to sever the link between zeal and chaos, the church and its enemies were thus united in an Enlightenment project, but bitterly divided over what it meant in practice.

Review
"Bulman's achievement is positively 'Thompsonian': the rescuing of Anglican scholars and scholarship, pastors and political operatives from the enormous condescension of (whig and revisionist) posterity. As such, Anglican Enlightenment ranks amongst the most important interventions in late seventeenth-century studies in the last decade, if not longer."
David Magliocco, Reviews in History

More Evidence for Christian Enlightenment
By Lisa Clark Diller
Bulman is attempting to saw through the ossified historiographical binary that portrays the leaders of the later seventeenth century Anglican church as either part of a liberal secular advance or as reactionary and conservative Christians attempting to reinvent the sixteenth century. He uses the life of Lancelot Addison to argue for an early Anglican Enlightenment. The defining problem that this early Enlightenment was a response to was the need for civil and religious order, while attempting to get at religious truth in a way that was recognizable in an era of pluralism. The fact of Christian pluralism at home, and religious diversity in the burgeoning empire required new methods and tactics—especially the use of history rather than theology as a way of arguing about universal norms for political and civil peace and order.
Andrews is an ideal means to get at this, as his education during the Civil War period fits Bulman’s identification of that context as a provocation for the Anglican desire to find non-violent and less coercive ways of arguing and using learning. Andrews wanted politeness and widely recognized ways of getting at evidence. His time during the Restoration as a civil servant and minister in Tangier especially allowed him to use comparative history and religion to make his arguments about good politics and civic order. In attempting to argue from universals, Bulman maintains, Andrews was participating in the methods of evidentiary evaluation that are normally attributed to Enlightenment thinkers. Bulman is quick to point out that the Orientalism of Andrews and others in this period is different from the late 18th century variety, however it was still the use of knowledge for power. More to the point, it allowed for traveling historians to get at sources that were not merely textual and ancient. Andrews both surveyed/observed the people of North Africa and utilized their own ancient histories and political tracts to do his scholarship. He criticized those who were armchair scholars, using old religious histories of the Jews or Muslims without understanding that their culture and society had changed over time. The point of all this was not only to understand non-Christians better for the purpose of conversion, but also to understand more universal social/political laws so that Andrews could critique and advise his own countrymen.
At the heart of Enlightenment assumptions was the idea that education was the main means of changing people’s hearts and minds. Authoritarian claims to revelation and obedience were not enough, and the Church of England clergy were largely commitment to non-coercion in their attempts to compel loyalty and religious renewal. Bulman emphasizes that this was well understood and practiced before 1689, even by those like Andrews who were not in favor of a general Protestant toleration. The moral reformation movement after the Glorious Revolution was therefore not new in it’s educational and tolerationist attributes. Instead, this reality had been around long before, as Andrews’ low clergy contemporaries regularly demonstrated. Catechisms and catechizing had rarely been so important, and Bulman connects this to the experience of the Interregnum’s lack of regular religious instruction and the perceived irreligion and ignorance that the Restoration clergy felt they had to deal with. Andrews both published and promoted this form of making change and establishing correct religion. His observations during his time abroad and his assessment of the Jewish and Islamic societies only convinced him of this, and he used the nascent Enlightenment evidences to argue for it.
Bulman’s narrative of Andrews’ career and the difficulty he had in making the transition after the Glorious Revolution is extremely effective in reminding the contemporary reader that the divides between scholars and polemicists of the day are not easily mapped onto each other. The Socinian/Deist rationalists were met on their own ground by devout Anglicans who used similar methods and evidences—and the latter were not monolithically low church/latitudinarian. Andrews, for instance, was part of this Anglican Enlightenment, but not sympathetic with the Williamite bishops and did not believe the empire’s de facto toleration should be extended to England. Instead, he continued his pre-Revolution commitment to catechizing, regular sacraments and a neo-Laudian reform of the material elements of worship. His inability to adjust to the new institutions of the 1690s was part of the larger failure (see also Brent Sirota on this subject) of the high church clergy to adopt effective tactics/institutions for spiritual renewal in the new pluralistic context.
What all the church leaders were dealing with was no longer the threat of dissent and/or popery, but irreligion and ignorance. And in the end, they were unable to suppress those threats without coercion and the strong commitment of the crown while still arguing for the particular sacerdotal importance of the Church of England. The universal arguments and evidences they relied on ended up not only failing to convince their audience, but became used by the later more secular Enlightenment. Still Bulman wants his readers to see the ways in which godly reformers were not only some of the earliest adopters of the Enlightenment assumptions, but that the nascent liberalism of this period was also a discourse of power. Its questions are still around—how do we secure peace in a pluralistic world? How do we evaluate truth? Liberalism wasn’t primarily about protecting people from the church/state, as it was developed by people who were committed to those institutions. Instead it was one attempt to answer the question of power and pluralism and was a tactic the state used to establish its authority.
History is often the story of unintended consequences. Our interest in how we got to be the way we are all too often causes us to oversimply. By using one man’s indirect and winding career path, Bulman has both clarified and complicated how Enlightenment commitments to universals and pluralism might result from a commitment Christian’s desire to convert and reinvigorate the sacerdotal and civic power of the very particular Church of England.
