Open Challenge

Rev Robinson (author of this book) has stated both in the book, as well on his website, that he remains open minded and if anyone can offer definite proof that challenges a statement or belief he shared in the book, he will indeed do further research on the matter and consider revising his original opinion.

So I am issuing such a challenge. In this book, the author states Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri’s note was obviously faked. The note basically said יהושוע (Yehoshua) was/is the Messiah. This indeed refers to Jesus Christ (or JC as the author uses in the book).

The challenge is that at least ten of Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri’s disciples (students) have come forward and have public stated (in several videos) that in the last several years of his life Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri did indeed teach that the Messiah is Yehoshua. Rabbi Zev Porat has interviewed and posted videos of these interviews on YouTube as well as his website messiahofisraelministries.org

Seems to me, that having ten students come forward verifying the claim, shows the note was not faked. Will the author of this Book Absolute Truth (or many of his readers) indeed perform further research to verify the claims being made? Is the author as really open minded as he claims?

Outstanding book!!!

I am so glad I got this book. I have always been intrigued on learning the art of Reiki. Some books out there are hard to understand, or they don't have enough substance in the book that your feel cheated. NOT IN THIS BOOK! Pamela Johnson writes in a manner that is completely easy to understand and makes the learning process fun. What is great is that you feel like she is right there in the room with you explaining the process to you. She has a natural talent of explaining the techniques and I felt like she answered all my questions I had. In Chapter 3, just as an example, Pamela explains the process of the "Self Reiki" process which, I didn't know how to do it until she explained it to me. Then she followed it up with a diagram which made it even easier to understand. If your thinking about exploring the wonderful benefits of healing yourself and healing others, this is your book. With the 25 techniques in this book, I now feel very confident that I can do this, and I have to thank her for putting all this information in such a easy format. Great job Pamela, and I will definitely be on the outlook for further works from her. Get this book now, you'll be glad you did!

These techniques to heal yourself are great, there are many tips that can follow, I want to thank the author Pamela Johnson for this great book, apart from being interesting also have very informative content.
The human body has a lot of energy, and obviously the logical thing is to avoid the negative energy, and always attract very good positive energy.

Misleading title

I guess the title of the book made me think there would actually be 25+ techniques, like methods of visualizations or meditations to use with Reiki. It should be called "another reiki primer" as it has the basics of what Reiki is, how to get an attunement, and what the chakras are. I don't see how "25 techniques" is in the title at all.

I read many books on relieving tension and stress from life but no book is as good as this one. It teaches you how to meditate in a very easy and simple manner. Bina, who is the author of this book, writes as a friend and mentor and guides you from the beginning till you learn the art of meditation. Another Great Classic by Derek Prince

Derek Prince was a fantastic man of God and an incredible writer. His works are invaluable to the growing Christian who wants more than what religion offers. Prince, discusses at length some of his experiences in ministry and how it applies to the principles he is trying to convey. His writing is clear. There is no need for a ministry degree or two to understand anything he is talking about. You don't need to pull out a dictionary or dust off the encyclopedia to understand what is being said. His use of Scripture and his understanding of Greek and Hebrew also help quite a bit. Understand and having spiritual power in your life was not meant to be some grand mystery only open to the spiritual elite. You can have that sort of power too. An excellent read.

Difficulties After Slavery

Reading the Mayor's Mission gave me an appreciation and understanding of the sacrifices of the brave Black men and women that lived during the period of Reconstruction. Virgil, the newly elected mayor of Milford was born into slavery but bought his freedom in a previous book. He often explained the customs of the South to Amanda. Virgil is more of the strong silent type until he preaches. Virgil spent months in the growing town of Atlanta as a representative trying to protect the rights of the newly freed slaves. It is in Atlanta that we are introduced to two of the real giants of the period, Henry McNeal Turner and Tunis Campbell. This sent me scrambling to do further research on Turner and Campbell.
Amanda, Virgil's wife was born and raised in the North by a free Black father and does not understand the customs of the South. This makes for tension between the newly married couple. As Virgil and Amanda work out the kinks in their marriage, we see a beautiful love story. There is even some humor. Virgil invited both Turner and Campbell to his home and gave Amanda a half days notice. Then there is the scene where Amanda and Virgil eat pie in a restaurant. It reminded me of times when my husband and I ate out. There are no erotic scenes in the book.

Their story just keeps getting better!

All I'm going to say about this story is, if you're already a fan of the folks of Milford, you absolutely will not be disappointed in this book! If this series is new to you, please give it a try from the beginning and fall in love with these people for yourself. Virgil and Mandy are still ironing out the wrinkles in their fairly new marriage. They have some uphill battles to face but being in love and being strong in faith and looking to God for help, they make it as best as they can. Times are changing and so is the town and its people. Loss and love played a big part in this story and I felt every emotion. I smiled at the growing romance between Virgil and Mandy (still clean so don't get scared), newcomers and old troublemakers made me mad, I cried like a baby in certain parts and March left me in awe. I never thought I'd love this series as much as I do and I can't wait to see what happens next. Fantastic job Piper!

Ms. Huguley gets better and better with every book!

The Mayor's Mission by Piper Huguley is a fantastic read that I gobbled up way too quickly. I suppose I'll just have to read it again. It was terrific! The novel continues the romance of Amanda and Virgil, who fell in love in The Preacher's Promise. In this story we see the married couple settling down to life in Mitford as Virgil works towards his political goals for equality and representation in the Georgia state legislature while Amanda continues her quest to educate the people of Mitford. Set in the Reconstruction Era, the story tugs at the heart and intellect at the same time. There were so many poignant moments in this book that I found myself misty eyed and in awe of the brave African Americans who lived during these difficult times. Amanda and Virgil's love story shines as they face tragedy, tension in their marriage and the potential loss of their dreams. Huguley has brought to life a period in history that is often overlooked. The authenticity that she brings to her novels is staggering. The reader is transported back in time with her vivid descriptions, dialogue and attention to detail. Kudos! A highly recommended read.

Archaic translation, best available

This tranlation is quite literal, very old fashioned, and essential for comparison with the newer Paulist Fathers version by Rorem and Luibheid. In the matter of old school vs. new school I confess to traditionalist leanings. But anyone who wants to know what the author intended needs to come to his or her own conclusions. It is best to learn Greek; second best to have two good translations of opposite tendencies to compare. Parker's (this version) is my favorite, and that of some other seasoned scholars, like Eric Perle.
State of the art in the 1890's is worthy to be compared to the state of the art of a century later. To those who find it difficult, I'd add: Not everyone is supposed to read this book; when I first read it, I was not ready for it. Twenty years later I was. If you care about authentic Christian mysticism, this is the founding classic -- whoever wrote it whenever. If you are not ready, you will be bored, perhaps feel contempt, or get a headache. When you are ready, if you must read it in English, this version and Luibheid's need to be used in tandem. For interpretations, I like Fr. Alexander Golitzin's best, though there are many others.

Classic Translation of a Timeless Classic

Among the finest available translations of St. Dionysius' works. Literal, old fashioned, and at times quaint, it remains a standard of comparison for the more recent and fully annotated but less literal version from the Paulist Fathers. It is less up to date, but no less accurate, and this edition is one of the most attractively bound and presented of this classic translation.

The Kindle version of the complete works of Dionysius the Areopagite is a good fit for a translation dating from the end of the 19th century. I would recommend it only to individuals truly interested in this old translation and the remarks made by the translation and editor in regard to the authorship of Dionysius, the Athenian converted by St. Paul in the first century C.E. Modern scholars now refer to the author of these "works" as Pseudo-areopagite. I am, however, enjoying the reading.

About the Author

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) served for 30 years at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. It is estimated that during his lifetime he spoke to 10 million people, and he became known as the "Prince of Preachers." His works fill over 60 volumes; and more than a century after his death, his sermons and devotional texts continue to challenge and touch Christians and non-Christians alike with their biblical grounding, eloquent text, and simple encouragement. Among his published books are "Lectures to My Students" (Hendrickson); "The Treasury of David" (Hendrickson), a devotional commentary on the Psalms; "All of Grace," the first Christian pocket-paperback published in the United States; numerous volumes of topical sermon collections; and the best-selling "Morning and Evening."

Listen To The Man Who Listens To God

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was England's Prince of Preachers in the nineteenth century. Today he is still one of the most well-known and loved authors in the English language - with more of his books and sermons in print (over 100 years) than any other English writer. However, I am not endorsing his works simply because of his popularity or any man's for that matter. I am recommending the works of this man because he is one who listens to God.
The Treasury of David is Spurgeon's Magnum Opus. If he had not written anything else apart from this masterful commentary on the Psalms, he would still be considered among the greatest Christian writers of all history. Students of the life of Spurgeon would know that he was not a strict academician. However, in all sense of the word, he was a man of learning who was acquainted with much of the scholarly issues of his times. Ultimately, he was a man who listen to God and labored for God's honor among men. This Treasury is the supreme monument to his 21 year labor.
In the compiling of this Treasury, Spurgeon read up hundreds of theological texts and commentaries (much of which was quoted among his own notes and comments). In the original edition, Spurgeon also included his "Notes to the Village Preacher" on every Psalm - showing that Spurgeon will always be very important to anyone who wishes to speak from the Pulpit. I believe, however, that the worth of this book is even more for the lay student (Spurgeon's heart beats for them the most throughout his life). He attempted to share with them the best scholarship of his time and to lead them beyond scholarship to the worship of David's God. Reading this volume led me into worship of the same God - and I will never recover from Him! I exult in Him!
We will see, as many other readers have seen that the greatest treasures of the ancient Israelite Kingdom was not the Temple that Solomon built, the gold and harem that the kings acquired nor even the Ark of the Covenant (that so many modern authors are speculating about) but these simple, unassuming songs that came from the worshipping heart of Israel's King David and his fellow worshippers. In this Treasury, we see a prayer for every occasion. We see the entire spectrum of the spiritual man's experience - penitence, courage, humiliation, power, confidence, exultation, doubt, weeping, laughter, awe, dread, fear and ultimately worship. Rightly did Faber exclaimed, "The Thought of Thee is almost prayer". This volume brings together the worship of David to Jehovah and Spurgeon to Jesus showing that they were both ultimately worshipping One same God. "Hear O Israel, the Lord thy God is One Lord".
The volume I'm reviewing here is an update of the original 7 volume set written in Victorian English. What we have here is the result of Roy H. Clarke's 10 year research into the life and writtings of Spurgeon. For those of you who distrust any update of a classic, rest assured that the work done here is exemplary work. Clarke has too much respect for Spurgeon to ever water down his words - every word by Spurgeon is here (only archaic words are replaced with modern English usage of the same). Clarke did not water down Spurgeon's words with the language of commerce but allowed the spaciousness, reverence and expansiveness of Spurgeon's English to be retained - and to speak afresh to us today in language that we can understand. Clarke removed most of the quotations from the other commentators in Spurgeon's original volumes and included only the most significant in this volume side-by-side with Spurgeon's own notes (something only done in this volume for the first time). Finally, the original notes of preachers are now presented in outline form according to the outlines for Spurgeon's own sermons (something that Roy Clarke himself spent his 10 years studying). Reading this volume makes me want to seek out the original 7 volume set (still in print) but I would say that even for those who have already read the original, this volume is still very valuable - for its dynamism, its freshness and as an aid by which we can listen to a man who listens to God.

Misleading - not complete work

This is not, as the title implies, the whole work, but volume 2 of 6 with just some of the Psalms. The text contains scanning errors. There is no table of contents. There are good Kindle editions available for just a little more - I recommend looking at them rather than this.

This review deals solely with the Kindle edition of the book(s), not with the actual content of Spurgeon's writing.

This is a great edition of Spurgeon's "Treasury of David." The text is well laid out in a simple, easy-to-read format. The text seems to be accurate to the original, so far as I have read, with no typographical errors or glitches that cheap editions often contain. There is a basic table of contents, to which are added links throughout each chapter to help with navigation. All in all, this is a very satisfying purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone with a Kindle, iPad, or other compatible reader.

An Unseemly Wife is written with excellence, a historical novel based on the lives of actual family members of the author. Aaron Holtz is a respected man in his Amish community until he takes heed of the English who convince him that there is amazing land, free for the taking, for those families who take the wagon train west to Idaho. Seeking this land of promise of the future for his family, Aaron proceeds, in spite of his wife Ruth’s concerns, to go against the Order and prepare for this westward journey. With his four children and pregnant wife, he sets out with promises to stay true to their faith, be religiously separate from the others on the journey, and be the leader his family desperately needs.

Ruth is afraid of leaving everything behind, envious of the younger family members moving into her home and using her former possessions. Her brother Dan’l and Aaron’s sister Anna and their families chose to remain in Pennsylvania, as did her best friend Delia, sister of one of the Elders. Ruth’s grandfather’s massive oak tree that was so much a part of her childhood and her years with her growing family – huge enough to climb and completely be hidden from the world in – had been cut down completely to make the wagon that cradled them and their remaining possessions safely on the journey. Choosing to be obedient to her faith and the husband she loves, Ruth gets into the box on wheels and heads toward her future.

E.B. Moore writes unflinchingly of life on the trail, which is certainly not the way we imagined when studying Manifest Destiny in school! It was interesting to learn how the men were established in various roles within the wagon train, and see how it really was a small community of people. There were some people whose opinion was revered as if it had come from God Himself, and the men and women treated their fellow travelers according to that person’s view. Heaven help everyone if that person were unbalanced in any way!

Imagine, if you will, what it was like to be in all kinds of weather including sleet and ice while living in a Conestoga. How it was for a woman, used working within a community of women, to keep herself separate as her religion demanded, especially when avoiding the weekly worship services led by the pastor and his wife on the trail. How to go through one’s pregnancy on the trail while raising and watching out for one’s children. There are joys and sorrows, hopes and losses.

The characters, based on real people, are very well defined. While we are primarily seeing through the eyes and heart of Ruth, she seems to have accurate assessments of those about her. Ruth definitely is a woman of courage and substance – not many women could live through what she did! Each man and woman is a believable, complex character who is described with compassion and clarity.

The storyline is interesting, a different way of seeing the westward journey. If one is looking for a traditional happily-ever-after, one would be disappointed. However, if one would choose to consider their own life in light of Ruth’s, one could question how we would respond to similar circumstances or what “happily-ever-after” would truly consist of if view of the multiple tragedies this woman endured. While I can wonder how Ruth made some of the choices she did, could I have done differently in the same circumstances? Ruth loved her husband dearly, and chose to obey him in this move to Idaho. Would this be enough in the endless hours on the trail? Will she be the same woman who left Pennsylvania, or become someone who is unacceptable to her God, her husband, even herself? One of the tragedies for this family is how they were treated as folks of a different faith within the wagon train, and we are reminded that prejudice has always existed in one form or another – and we see a grim reality of how terrible the results of prejudice can be. I appreciate that the account of E.B. Moore’s ancestor demonstrates a more realistic account of the journey than some authors might show. I will think of those who made the westward trip in a different light in the future, men and women made of even sturdier stuff than I thought before! And celebrate that there remains an open avenue of hope for Ruth and her loved ones.

I recommend An Unseemly Wife to adults of any age, particularly women, who appreciate well-written historical novels about westward travel.

Very Different Amish Story

An Unseemly Wife is a very different Amish read then most of the other books I have read. Yes Ruth is willing to follower her husband Aaron as any Amish wife would; he is the head of her household, and makes the major decisions.
This story was so different in the way that the Amish try to stay together for the sake of their religion and the practice of their faith. What she never ever expected was for her husband to go against his faith and strike out on his own from Pennsylvania to the unknown of Idaho. He has been told that there are acres and acres of land their for the taking.
This is 1867 and the mode of transportation will be by wagon, packing up what they can transport to the unknown, and leaving behind some of her cherished memories. Hard to imagine how Ruth must have felt, she was leaving all that she had ever known, and her rock, her faith.
Doubt I would have made it out of the driveway, never mind across the country, Ruth was one strong woman. We travel each mile with her, and are there for the birth of her baby. Wow, again I can’t imagine.
If you want to read a story about what our country was like for a pioneering family, this will put you right into the wagon. Don’t miss this rather historical read; you won’t be able to put it down once you start. A really great read.

It's rare for a novel that's so poetically written to also have a page-turning plot. E.B. Moore has crafted a gripping, heartbreaking, moving story. Read it quickly to find out what happens; then read it again to revel in the language.
