For the Love of a Son, by Jean Sasson

From the New York Times bestselling author of PRINCESS: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia, comes the heartbreaking story of one woman's quest for her stolen child. As a little girl in Afghanistan, Maryam fought for equality and defied the second-class standing of women by pretending to be a boy. When her feisty spirit nearly cost her life, after a public act of rebellion against the invasion of Russia, Maryam is forced to flee to America. But her fresh start at life is short-lived as her arranged marriage to a violent Afghan leaves her with only one joy--the birth of her son. When she attempts to escape her brutal marriage, her husband steals their son away and takes him back to Afghanistan, a land torn by civil war and Taliban oppression. What follows is the stirring true story of one mother's struggle for justice, as she fights to be reunited with her son.

Excellent, deep, engrossing book!
By ggh
I have read many of Jean Sasson's books--and have been a big fan for years. This book was excellent--as all her books are. The story is true. I know Maryam is a real person and I know that Ms. Sasson's passion is showing the strength and perseverance of women in many countries where freedoms are limited, by sharing their stories. This was a quick read because I found it hard to put down. There are many dark parts to this story--but we must realize there is much darkness in countries where people are not free. Ms. Sasson is a gifted writer and Maryam is an amazing woman. If you care about people--and what happens in the Middle East - you will be glad you read this book.

one lady's harrowing story of triumph, tragedy, hope, despair, faith and introspection
By JGC
As someone that has read every single book that Ms. Jean Sasson has written over the last several years, I can say with all certainty that "For the Love of a Son" is among her very, very best (and that's saying a lot because Jean is one of the world's greatest writers on women's issues). I enjoyed this book immensely as it is gripping, thought-out, thought-provoking and very detailed. My only regret, like all of the books that I have read by Jean is that I completed it too quickly. But that is only the work of an exceptional writer.

"For the Love of a Son" is the autobiography of Ms. Maryam Khail. Like all of Jean's other biographies, this one is written in first-person and reading it was so captivating because I felt like Maryam was actually speaking to me from beyond the pages.

Maryam is an Afghan citizen that moved to the US and then to Saudi Arabia. I like to think of this book as 2 books in 1 because there are so many fascinating aspects to it. I learned so much about Afghan culture, history and everyday life in this part of the world (both before and after the Russian invasion during the '80s). The author also took the reader on a tour of a her familial tree, detailing her parents' upbringing and even her grandmother's life.

The book is called "For the Love of a Son" for a reason. I don't want to give too much away, but Maryam tragically loses her son (he is kidnapped). Some of the passages were very shocking and incredibly sad, I couldn't believe how it ended. I can assure you that your fingers will get tired turning the pages as you franticaly read on and on (this is the type of book that one cannot put down). Some of the book reminded me very much of one of my favorite TV movies with Kate Jackson, "The Stranger Within" (if you ever get an opportunity you have to see this movie, it is excellent and I strongly recommend it).

Some basic info about the book... This is a softback book, a total of 280 pages long and it includes several black and white photos interspersed throughout the text. Moreover, congruent to most of Jean's other books, "For the Love of a Son" includes an index, a timeline (of Afghan history), an epilogue, a detailed map of the region and even a section at the end describing what happened to everyone that were germane to the plot (including Maryam and some of her family members). The book was first published in 2010 by Doubleday and is also available through Amazon on Kindle.

If you read books about humanities, women's issues, geography and true-to-life stories you will most assuredly enjoy "For the Love of a Son." I congratulate Jean on writing another gripping book and anticipate reading her next one.

Gripping, Informative, and Sad True Life Tale of a Mother's All-reaching Love
By Susie Norris
This is the story of a young girl growing up in pre-Soviet, pre-Taliban Afghanistan. Young Maryam is able to escape from this land of brutal reigning tribes to the United States where she marries, at her father's insistence, a brutal Afghan who beats her yet gives her her heart's desire, a darling son. When she divorces her husband, he pays her back in the worst way possible by kidnapping their three year old boy. With unrelenting mother love, Maryam pursues her sweet child. When at last, 14 years later she finds him, she discovers that something far worse and more insurmountable than physical mileage now separates them. This is a book I will read again.
If you liked Not Without My Daughter, or if you would like to learn more about a land that has been much in the news for the past 20 years, you will appreciate this book.
