About the Author

Bonnie Zieman is an ex-Jehovah’s Witness who was baptized, became a pioneer and special pioneer, and was married to an elder. After thirty years, she left the sect, going on to earn a master’s degree in education from Sherbrooke University in Quebec, Canada. She also studied for three years in the applied social science program at Concordia University in Montreal and gained formal training in several schools of therapy. After twenty years in private practice as a psychotherapist, she is now recently retired.

Zieman is married to another ex-Jehovah’s Witness and has three adult children.

If you are in pain about TTATT...Read this!

All my life I have rested all my faith, dreams, thoughts, you name it, on the Watchtower Society. I am a 45 year old man. Just left 9 months ago. Stopped all Wt. activity 2 months back. Just about had a nervous breakdown. For two months I cried everyday at least once, like a child who's "Mother" abandoned him when I discovered all the lies, cover- ups, scandals. I loved my life as a witness. I was a zealous unstoppable "Jehu". But that dream ended in an instant of time. The worst nightmare of any witness came true. The "apostates" were right all along! As a suggestion, I believe that these 4 books should be sold as a rescue kit for ex-JW's:
Crisis of Conscience, In Search of Christian Freedom, Combatting Cult Mind Control, and this MOST excellent book!!!! I suggest reading these books in this order. Their is no book that can help you get on with your life quite like this book. Written by someone who was truly involved with the Watchtower and now a professional in psychology . This book gives practical, professional advice on how to deal with the psychopathic residue of this most deceptive cult. Escape the childlike behavior of having to answer to "Mother". Stand proud and feel good about your independence . Having been a totally indoctrinated "true believer", I am critical about many books. Some seem empty and repetitive about escaping the Watchtower. This is not like that. It has substance you can dig into. Do not waste time. Hit the purchase button NOW!

Understanding and moving beyond guilt

Having been born and raised in a devout JW family, and having married into an equally devout JW family, I began discerning distinctions between Bible teachings and certain Watchtower teachings by the time I turned 30. That is when I began struggling with intense feelings of guilt, although I had not adopted a practice or lifestyle for which one could be disfellowshipped from one's congregation. By the time I turned 60, I realized I could no longer accept, support or recommend the JW religion, yet I was not free to pursue Christian fellowship outside the JW religion without dire consequences; therefore, I finally disassociated from JWs, yet my feelings of guilt only intensified. Psychotherapist Bonnie Zieman helped me identify two likely sources of the guilt which has plagued me for more than 30 years. EXISTENTIAL GUILT results from denying one's true self, especially when one fails to meet one's true potential, a feeling with which many JWs can identify. NEUROTIC GUILT comes from an imagined transgression such as changing one's mind on religious matters and leaving one's religion, a feeling with which most ex-JWs can identify. While existential guilt can serve as a healthy guide back to one's true self, neurotic guilt is unhealthy and damaging and is the type of guilt placed on doubting JWs by the Watchtower. If one does not understand the difference between the positive and negative types of guilt, the punitive part of one's mind (called the Superego) assumes one has sinned and deserves punishment, and one can end up unknowingly creating forms of self-punishment (e.g. depression, failures, accidents, chronic pain, illnesses, chronic anxiety, self-sabotage, etc.) Changing one's mind and leaving the Watchtower organization is not a sin, and one doing so certainly deserves no punishment! This is what I learned from Bonnie Zieman's wonderful book, and Bonnie provides many practical suggestions on how to rid oneself of such damaging guilt so that one can enjoy a happy and fulfilling life outside of the Watchtower Society. Thank you, Bonnie Zieman!

Can I give this book 10 stars please?

Am only giving this 5 stars because I can't possibly give it 10 stars. No kidding! I dissociated myself earlier this year from the JW. I was a third generation JW, born in it - 30years. Its been really tough. Oh, being shunned by people I have known for years, people I always had in my house for dinner parties. Despite the pain, I just know I can't go back. This cold treatment just reinforces my reason for leaving which was my observation of fake friendships, my lack of intellectual freedom and coldness of it all.
I think I wasn't prepared, despite taking my time to dissociate it has still been a struggle. I really love this book. I have read other books on this topic but in terms of actual techniques for healing, this is the best. I love the debriefing and visualization techniques. I have immediately started debriefing myself everyday. Its a new concept and immensely helpful. I have decided to formally mourn and grieve the loss of my social structure. I also like the suggestion to take time before embracing another religion. I kind of hate the idea of church now but mostly because I feel cheated by an religious organization I sincerely believed was build on Christian love. I also like the idea that we must show compassion for those who are required to shun us, its unnatural and difficult for them as well.
Despite all this, I really love the freedom and joy I am enjoying now which I never had. The painful moments are fewer and keep decreasing. Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this book!

The one book on Thomas Merton that connects the spiritual to the active.

If you can only read one book about Merton read "Thomas Merton, Peacemaker". It connects the Merton of the 40's and 50's to the Merton of the 60's. John Dear once said that he never really got as much out of Merton's search for the "True-self", that he always seemed more connected with Merton in his later life. Well, this book proves that the last ten years of John's life in the desert and his work for nonviolence and peace has connected him even more to his true self and the spiritual side of life and his connection with a true spiritual director in Thomas Merton. For anyone who desires to find that path to nonviolence and to grow in their understanding of Thomas Merton and John Dear, look no further than this book. You will not be disappointed.

heartfelt and deeply considered summation of all the length and breadth of peacemaking by this great Catholic monk and theologian, this mystic and true lover of God and humanity.

The Reverend Father John DEar SJ returns as so often to Thomas Merton as a foundation for our peacemaking, the why's and how's, for Father Merton is a might and generous fount guiding us along the path to the God of Love, Peace and of justice.

Of all the great losses humanity suffered in 1968, we here remember Thomas Merton as one whose words and example of peace and justice also ring on to inform us and to call us to the true path.

Perhaps one of our greatest Thomas Merton scholars and contemplatives still writing today is Father John Dear, and his writing is beautiful, is very clear and to the point, and has most considered every aspect of the witness of Thomas Merton from personal relations to writings. This highly readable and edifying work of a mere two hundred pages serves well not only as an introduction to this blessed field of peacemaking but for those who have long walked the path a clarion retelling of it all, inspiring us ever onward in what seems a useless struggle but one which in the larger picture is the only struggle we have to take on.

I cannot here presume to resume all the wisdom and strength conveyed in these pages by Father Dear; I can only urge you to take and to read, for this lectio divino is sacred ground.

He changed his own culture and showed us how to change ours and those around us to one of the nonviolent Peace of Christ. Thank you to John Dear for fortifying the thoughts and actions of Thomas Merton. There will always be questions about insane violence but we need to start with ourselves and this book is a beautiful guide to Peace.

John Michael Talbot is an award-winning Christian musician, writer, television presenter, motivational speaker and itinerant minister to churches and parishes around the world. An early pioneer of contemporary Christian music, Talbot grew up performing in a country-rock band with his brother Terry before embarking on a spiritual journey that led him through Native American religion and Buddhism to Christianity. At this point he and Terry joined the Jesus Movement, recording the album Reborn on the Sparrow record label. He is now recognized as Catholic music's most popular artist with over fifty albums and four million copies sold. His songs are published in hymnals throughout the world. A member of the Jesus Movement in the early 1970s, Talbot converted to Roman Catholicism in 1978 after immersing himself in the life and teaching of St. Francis of Assisi. He then founded his own community, the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, at Little Portion Hermitage as an "integrated monastic community" with celibate brothers and sisters, singles, and families. Talbot is also the author of numerous books bringing the Christian monastic tradition to contemporary life, including The Jesus Prayer, Blessings of St. Benedict, The Way Of The Mystics: Ancient Wisdom For Experiencing God Today and The Music of Creation: Foundations of a Christian Life.

Inspiring meditation

When I was growing up, John Michael Talbot was a CCM artist. Of Methodist background I believe. Then, at some point, he converted to Catholicism. He has since went on to continue developing music, albeit with a little lower profile, and to develop a community called the Brothers and Sisters of Charity. In recent years, he has been using his gifts in communication to write books that challenge people to understand the spiritual journey in a thoughtful, contemplative, and yet contemporary way.

Talbot's latest book (which is reworked from an older version of the same text) is entitled The Master Musician: Meditations on Jesus. The book is a simple description of one's journey with Christ in three phases, guided by the metaphor of musicianship. Talbot says in the introduction:
"This work is divided into three main sections: God's grace, our human response, and life in the church. The first is liked unto the crafting of a fine guitar by a Master Musician. The second, unto learning how to play under the Master's instruction. The third, unto learning how to play with others in the symphony orchestra or band."
I found this book educational, thought-provoking and spiritually nourishing. I learned a lot about the development of musicians, and how that process parallels the spiritual birth and growth of individuals. Particularly intriguing in this sequence to me was the movement from a "personal" relationship with Jesus, which is essential, to a relationship with God within the context of a community, and how the later step is the next step in spiritual maturity. This left a lot for me to consider in leading others to faith and to maturity in Christ as a pastor.

I recommend this book for people who are charged with helping believers grow, and especially for musicians and music teams which will be challenged in unique ways to help their teams grow in their faith.

There is not enough info in this book to really do anything it claims in a complete way. You will not learn how to cast a circle, you will not learn how to celebrate any sabbats or moon rituals. It is very basic and I am sorry I wasted my money.

The last 25% of the book included actual spells. The first 75% of the book was basically an overview of the Wiccan religion. Author uses Wicca and witchcraft interchangeably. Stresses the Wiccan rede. Huge reference guide regarding what things mean in dreams or visions.

Justin goes into quite detail about the craft before delving into spells and the like. I love his detail on the gods and goddesses. For each walk of the Wiccan belief he talks about the gods/goddesses and explains what they are the patron deity for. He also goes into great detail on how to connect with your personal deity as well as each individual symbol & sacred object.

This book is fantastic and I suggest anyone who wants to learn more, find their diety, spirital guide, etc read this book! Definitely worth the money!

Finally, after all this time Emma and Jarron are going to be together! Looks like all the Bontrager' s are back together and the loose ends are tied up.

My only complaint is that Hannah Schrock's short stories are too short! I love reading her stories and am always disappointed when they are done so quickly. A very good read and I would recommend it.

An addition to your catty Bast library

A book of prayers/hymns, rituals, poetry, food ritual recipes, short stories, and even artwork for Bast worship especially feline adoration. This is a lovely collection to add to a cat person's library, especially for someone who works with Bast. If you'll like to know more about Bast in the perspective of Her devotees, this will be the right book for you. I bought this book to understand Bast in worship and after reading it, I have a lot more better understanding of Her than I did before reading it.

Most of the short stories featuring Bast were very peculiar, but unique and inspiring. Much different from the other devotional books from Bibliotheca Alexandrina that I own. It was also interesting having ritual food recipes which I at first thought were cat food recipes! Unfortunately, I will not be able to make them due to my strict diet. I enjoyed the Bast hymns/prayers, but I felt they may been a little weak. Some were a little confusing to decipher. There were a few ones that were memorable to me.

There was also mention of giving cats milk as treats in some writings which is not totally healthy for cats. Cats can be lactose intolerant, so there should be a warning to mention this.

Besides a few things, this book is worthy to be owned by a Bast devotee/cat lover.
