Lackluster entry in the Purpose genre

Finding your purpose, living your dreams, and fighting fear are staples of the mega-church pastor publishing phenomenon. In the last 10 years the market has become so flooded with books on these topics that one might conclude they aren’t working. That would certainly explain why they keep writing them.
What Keeps You Up At Night by Pete Wilson is the latest entry into the genre and it comes up a bit flat. If you’ve read books in the Purpose genre you’ll find this one doesn’t add anything new to the conversation. At the same time it’s not without some good content.
What Keeps You Up At Night, at its core, is about following your dreams. In other words; what is it that you think about the most, or worry about, or what is it that you would passionately like to change, or do. Pete Wilson suggests looking at that as the dream for your life and fighting the fear that stops you from pursuing it.
There are several things in the book that work. Wilson uses the example of Joseph from Genesis to show how we need to have faith in God when things are going well and when they aren’t. He advises praying what’s on your heart rather than what you think you should say. He exhorts us to build our dreams on God or else we’re building with the wrong material. He uses the example of Daniel to teach the reader to rely on God’s provision. He includes setting aside what we want for what God wants, surviving the low points in pursuit of a dream, glorifying God in our dreams, stepping out in faith, and not giving in to fear.
What trips me up in this book is not necessarily what’s presented, but how it’s presented.
Wilson has a tendency to use the wrong word. I counted three occasions where he talks about ruthlessly trusting God. Ruthless means having no pity; to be cruel and merciless. I’m having a difficult time equating no pity, cruel and merciless with trusting God.
Wilson has a tendency to stretch the meaning of the text. In most cases, he treats the biblical text reasonably without allegorizing, but there were some cases where his interpretation required a bit of definition bending. In the introduction he interprets Ecclesiastes 3:11, “[God] has put eternity into man’s heart,” to mean that we are hardwired to be dreamers. In context the verse isn’t about having a dream, but recognizing that mortality is temporary and God is eternal.
The problem is in understanding the word dream. A dream can be a goal for your life, or possibly an unattainable standard; it can be a prophecy from God; it can be that thing your brain does at night. Wilson mashes all three definitions together and comes out the other side with some awkward theology. Jesus, Wilson says, was a “man of sorrows (Isaiah 53:3)” because he had a big dream and that brought on big opposition. To reduce Jesus’ ministry and God’s plan of salvation to a mere goal is to diminish God’s glory and Wilson says we shouldn’t diminish God’s glory.
Wilson also confuses the audience, which is not uncommon for the genre. What I mean is that there’s no distinction between Christians and non-Christians with regard to the love of God. He rightly describes God’s love as unconditional, but fails to mention that for those who don’t have faith and trust in Christ, God’s love also contains judgment.
In one paragraph, Wilson says, “But just as surely as your parents still loved you when you stayed out late…God still loves you when you mess up.” ‘Mess up’ is the Purpose genre way of not using the word sin. It is true that God loves His children even when they sin, but what’s the antidote to the human tendency to believe that we have to then work our way back into God’s good graces to make it up to him? Grace, repentance and forgiveness.
Grace reminds us that our sins are covered and drives us to repent and receive forgiveness and that means we were never out of God’s good graces because His love for us is not dependent on us.
Wilson’s answer is, “You can’t hide from God and there’s no need to! More than anything else, He wants you to come back to Him, say you’re sorry, and let Him help you do better next time.” This is all law and there’s no relief in the Law. What if I don’t do better next time? Does that mean I don’t trust God enough, or does it mean God isn’t helping me?
I’m not questioning Wilson’s faith I’m just concerned about the way he explains it.
It all leaves me in the awkward position of being able to half-heartedly recommend the book, but I probably wouldn’t. I wouldn’t recommend the book to a young Christian because of the sketchy word play and my guess is most mature Christians likely don’t need it.

How to keep fear from running your life

Learning to trust God--His ways and His timing. Sounds easy. We all know it's not. Pete Wilson's new book, What Keeps You At Night, is about overcoming paralyzing fear, doubts, and insecurities and moving forward, just taking that next step of obedience and trusting God with the results.
Something about the way Pete Wilson writes makes it easy to connect with him. Maybe it's his storytelling, his examples, his easy-to-read style; I always enjoy his books. I found myself highlighting and underlining throughout this one. It was encouraging without being Pollyana-style blindly optimistic. He faced hard truths---like we will have trouble in this world, and we will have to wait, and there will be uncertainty, and sometimes we will be rejected or disappointed. But God. That's really what it all comes down to. Yes, life can be tough, But God.
My favorite quote in the book is housed in his chapter on embracing uncertainty. He writes, "We think the more spiritually mature we are the more clarity we should have. The fact is, the more spiritually mature we are the less clarity we need." This one sentence nailed it for me. I find that God asks me more and more to live with unknowns or take steps of faith without neon sign confirmation. It's because He's asking me to trust HIM and Him alone more and more.
This book includes key ideas and reflection questions at the end of each chapter, as well as an action point of some kind called "Your Next Step." It's these next steps that I loved the most. Some of the 'assignments' he gave were unique and could really prod you into growing spiritually and stepping out in faith. In one chapter, he asks you to do something you are afraid of this week: Like strike up a conversation with a stranger if you're shy or go a day without social media if you are addicted to it or speak up about some injustice that you see. On the surface, none of these seemed like life-changing, faith-altering, huge faith-steps. And yet, how often do we let the smallest fears or bad habits turn into strongholds that absolutely keep us from obeying God and His call in our lives? Too often we get hung up on looking for the grand vision for our lives or we are overwhelmed by that one giant of opposition and really God is just asking us to take that next right step.

What Keeps You Up at Night

Through some health challenges that I have faced over the past few years I have been on a journey to reinvent myself and find my worth in the new normal that I face. This is really what keeps me up at night, the wondering what am I to do since normal everyday 9-5 Jobs may not be a way for me to make it anymore. When I had the chance to read “What keeps you up at night” by Pete Wilson I was expecting the typical self help pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get it done message. What I found was a book that instead turned the focus to discover what it is that God is doing. Wilson does a great job of not necessarily answering the questions that you have but rather adjusting the focus of the question to see how we must trust in God when facing these decisions. Often I think God is just wanting us to do something it is us that paralyze ourselves in fear. This book will help you step out in faith knowing that God conquers your fear and holds you.
