Anger can be thrown outward on everybody and everything or pushed inward mostly doing inner damage but eventually seeping out sideways and doing damage to others as well. Boundaries are crossed, relationships damaged and enormous stress wreck havoc within and throughout our lives. Chapman reveals the how and the why and more importantly the what now and where do I go in practical ways to tame this emotion. This should be in every small group, Sunday school, or Wed night study starting up this fall. Bravo!!"

Anger CAN be Good!

Anger gets a bad rap. It’s often pictured as wild, out of control, and consuming. Think about the latest Disney movie, Inside Out. Anger is depicted as short (denoting little patience), red (a fiery, bold color), gruff, and easily knocked out of control. But if anger could be a good thing? With that bold premise, Gary Chapman, best known for his Five Love Languages books, tackles the topic of anger and how to control it.

Gary Chapman’s first couple of chapters builds the argument that anger is not inherently negative, but can be controlled and tamed and released positively. Anger, he writes, is something that we experience because we are made in the image of God and God experiences anger as well. However, God’s anger is wholly positive and just, an appropriate reaction to sin or injustice. We, as fallen creatures, have perverted anger to make it something negative and petty.

Anger, therefore, should stem from our sense of moral concern. It should arise in us when our sense of morality is shaken. He talks about the righteous anger of Jesus, the anger against drunk driving that led to the creation of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the anger against slavery that led to its abolition, and more. Anger, properly controlled, is a powerful force for good.

The following chapters deal with difference aspects of anger, from how to control and release good anger to how to control and restrain bad anger. Chapman also discusses specific relationships: anger against God, anger against a spouse, even anger against oneself. He covers both quick-tempered anger that builds quickly and festering grudges that slowly poison. One of my favorite chapters his chapter on teaching children how to handle anger (it applies to us older ones too!). The closing chapter also does a great job in explaining best practices for dealing with angry people (an excellent resource for anyone in the service industry!).

Each chapter (after the first two) ends with a Quick Take recap that summarizes and distills the content down into its bare bones structure. For example his quick take on handling anger:

Consciously acknowledge to yourself that you are angry.
Restrain your immediate response.
Locate the focus of your anger.
Analyze your options.
Take constructive action.

Anger: Taming a Powerful Emotion is an important and vital read that redeems a much-maligned God-given part of our identity as images of God. This book is a paradigm shifter that will completely change how to react toward your own anger and the anger of others.

Falls Short, But Has Good Things

Gary Chapman is an evangelical Christian counselor. This book is about how people can handle anger.

According to Chapman, anger is something that God has given us, for it can entail being upset at injustice, and this can lead to change for the good. At the same time, Chapman acknowledges that anger is not always about injustice, for it can be about personal inconvenience, or it can result from a misunderstanding. Chapman states that there are at least two ways to deal with anger at a person. First, one can hold the anger back and give the person over to God, who is just, compassionate, and aware of where people are. Proverbs 29:11, after all, states that the wise quietly hold back their anger. Chapman later criticizes bottling anger up and letting it implode; whether that contradicts this piece of his advice, I do not know. Second, one can tactfully confront the person, which accords with other biblical passages, particularly in the Gospel of Matthew. Confrontation provides the offender with an opportunity to apologize, repent, and try to change his or her behavior, or to offer clarification in case of misunderstanding. Chapman also discusses strategies in dealing with angry people: the key here, according to Chapman, is to listen to the angry person. This, I think, is an important insight, for an angry person can easily alienate other people and be in a state of loneliness and isolation.

There is a rhyme and reason to what Chapman recommends. I, for one, struggle with confronting people, but I can understand why Chapman would recommend such a course. For a variety of reasons, however, I am doubtful that such a course will always make a person feel better, for it is not a one-size-fits-all strategy. Some people do not care if they offend others because they are jerks. You find plenty of these on the Internet. I do not think that such people would be receptive were I to tell them that they hurt my feelings in a comment. In some cases, confrontation may not be appropriate. Chapman mentions a person who was angry because he was laid off. Should that person go to his boss and explain why he is angry with him? I cannot picture that as an appropriate response. Sometimes the issue is not who is at fault or who sinned but may relate to different interests, personalities, preferences, or frustrated hopes and expectations. I may be upset because a person stopped following my blog, for example, but that is no reason for me to confront that person: it is not as if the person is morally obligated to follow my blog. Chapman’s advice on confrontation would probably work in friendships and family relationships, and maybe other situations, such as when a person is slandering someone (and Chapman presents a story about that). It will not redress all situations that make a person angry, however, and, in light of that, I wish that Chapman offered more strategies on how to deal with anger. One strategy that Chapman would probably recommend is prayer, and, while that may be effective, Chapman should have provided outlooks that people could embrace to help them rise above their anger.

The book, in my opinion, falls short, but I did appreciate Chapman’s compassionate, understanding tone towards people who struggle with anger, and also the stories that he shared.

Highly Recommend

Anger is an issue we all deal with, whether we use this emotion all the time or once in awhile. I will be the first to admit, I have big issue with anger. I used to get mad at the slightest little thing, if someone said the wrong thing to me, or if something didn’t go my way I was blowing my top. I blamed my parents for my anger issues, growing up in a home full of yelling and the slightest thing would cause your dad to blow his gasket, you learned to be reserved but in the mean time you were learning that this is how you handle everything.

When I was given the opportunity to read Gary Chapman’s new book, Anger, I couldn’t wait. I had already came to grips with my problem and sought help from God, counseling, and Celebrate Recovery, but knew I needed something else. Anger: Taming A Powerful Emotion will help you, recognize the difference between “bad” and “good” anger, how to use anger to motivate you toward a positive change, release long-simmering resentment, and how to teach others how to deal with anger (especially your children).

Anger is part of life but it doesn’t have to control your life and make everyone scared of you. Learning how to handle it is the key. This book has helped me tremendously and has helped me teach my daughters about anger. Another great thing about this book is it comes with reflection questions at the end of each chapter as well as a discussion guide you could use with a small group, and a personal anger assessment to see how you manage your anger.

I highly recommend this book to everyone!!

Hope Rekindled

After having emigrated from a country where most people have lost hope for their children’s futures, my family and I started hoping again, dreaming again here in the USA. The author of the Fourth Gospel puts the claim succinctly: “If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me” (John 5:46).

Hays thus traces thereading strategies the Gospel writers employ to “read backwards” and to discover how the Old Testament figuratively discloses the astonishing paradoxical truth about Jesus’ identity. Attention to Jewish and Old Testament roots of the Gospel narratives reveals that each of the four Evangelists, in their diverse portrayals, identify Jesus as the embodiment of the God of Israel. Hays also explores the hermeneutical challenges posed by attempting to follow the Evangelists as readers of Israel’s Scripture—can the Evangelists teach us to read backwards along with them and to discern the same mystery they discovered in Israel’s story?

Hays set’s out his “twofold thesis that the OT teaches us how to read the Gospels and that–at the same time–the Gospels teach us how to read the OT.” He boils this down even further in saying that “Scripture is to be reinterpreted in light of the cross and resurrection.” If we under scripture as unveiling God’s story, this should seem obvious. And yet, how often is such reading discouraged. Goldingay, for example, acknowledges that “The biblical gospel is…a narrative about things God has done.” And yet in his method he does not “discus the way what is concealed in the Old is revealed in the New.” “Moses” he writes, “suggests that his teaching, and the Old Testament by extension, is not a repository of concealment but a repository of revelation. The New certainly assumes that there are things that are revealed in the New, but that is not a basis for reading them into the Old. They are new.” Hays disagrees. For example, in writing about Jesus’ claim to be the “bread of life” in reference to the the crowds question about manna, Hays writes that “According to John’s Gospel, that is the true meaning of what Moses wrote.” The Gospel writers are teaching us how to re-read scripture in light Jesus death and resurrection.

Hays brilliantly lays out the diverse ways in which all of the Evangelists do this, and concludes with a final chapter on why such diversity is important, albeit complicated. One reason why such reading is crucial is that allows us to see (as intended, I believe) that all of the Gospel writers, and not just John, have a “high Christology” if we are reading correctly.

I’ll end with this quote, which seems appropriate for the review, from Hays:

“To read Scripture well, we must bid farewell to plodding literalism and rationalism in order to embrace a complex poetic sensibility. The Gospel writers are trying to teach us to become more interesting people–by teaching us to be more interesting readers.”

Hays “Reading Backwards” helps us to become such people.

[As an aside, I do hope this book comes down in price. It is very expensive for a 109 page book.]

I appreciate the intertextual reading of the Scriptures

Richard B. Hays’ new book is a short read but there is a lot to digest in its 109 pages. Each of the four Gospels is given a chapter. In this post I will limit my reflections to his chapter on the Gospel of Mark.

By way of review about the book in general, in the preface Hays states clearly that the book is an "account of the narrative representation of the identity of Jesus in the canonical Gospels, with particular attention to the ways in which the four Evangelists reread Israel’s Scripture, as well as the ways in which Israel’s Scripture prefigures and illuminates the central character in the Gospel stories."

For Hays, the concept of ‘mystery’ is essential for understanding how Mark crafts his narrative around the person of Jesus. He points out that Mark is generally more cryptic and allusive than Matthew (who much more often states explicitly “This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet , saying…”). Mark’s strategy of indirect reference and subtle allusions to the Old Testament cautions us against speaking too quickly about the mysterious identity of the Carpenter from Nazareth. In other words, there is something crudely wrong with stating so blatantly and matter-of-factly that “Jesus is the God of Israel.” Such a brash declaration fails to do justice to the transcendence and profoundness of the truth contained in the affirmation. And some might even say that kind of statement oversimplifies an incredibly complex identity; Hays quotes Rowan Williams, “There is a kind of truth which, when it is said, becomes untrue” (31). The point is that the identity of Jesus cannot be boiled down into such an unqualified two-dimensional statement. Instead, Mark chooses to drop dynamic hints about the identity of Jesus by way of careful selection of stories (and careful telling of those stories), hints that leave the reader to silently ponder who this Jesus was, drawing his categories from the Old Testament.

Here is how Hays concludes his interpretation of Mark’s figural Christology (an interpretation which he notes is not far from the way Mark’s Gospel is read in the Orthodox tradition):

"So, if we seek to read Scripture through Mark’s eyes, what will we find? We will find ourselves drawn into the contemplation of a paradoxical revelation that shatters our categories and exceeds our understanding. We will learn to stand before the mystery in silence, to acknowledge the limitation of our understanding, and to wonder. The ‘meaning’ if Mark’s portrayal of the identity of Jesus cannot be rightly stated in flat propositional language; instead, it can be disclosed only gradually in the form of narrative, through hints and allusions that project the story of Jesus onto the background of Israel’s story. As Mark superimposes the two stories on one another, remarkable new patterns emerge, patterns that lead us into a truth too overwhelming to be approached in any other way."

I do have some questions about how Hays establishes an Old Testament allusion. As one example, at times Hays seems to rest his reading of the OT allusion on the repetition of a couple key phrases (and perhaps also thematic similarity?). I want to ask, is the repetition of phrases enough to establish an admittedly cryptic allusion? It would be nice if more evidence could be adduced to demonstrate the presence of an allusion.

Notwithstanding my unanswered questions, I deeply appreciate this kind of reading of Mark’s gospel. As a footnote, I think it provides a convincing explanation of the shorter (in my opinion, genuine) ending of Mark. If the shorter ending is original, then Mark ends his gospel with this authorial comment: “Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid” (Mark 16:8). This mysterious concluding statement has generated a history of complex textual emendations and additions by scribes in the centuries to follow Mark’s writing. Why would Mark end his gospel in such an unexpected way? Well, if Hays’ reading is correct then it should not be so unexpected after all. Mark has been preparing his readers for this kind of reaction all along. As Hays puts it, "readers who listen carefully to the resonances of Israel’s Scripture in Mark’s Gospel and then see how the story drives toward the passion narrative may find themselves, like the women in Mark’s artful dramatic ending, reduced, at least for a time, to silence…The fear of the women is, of course, a response to the message of the resurrection of Jesus the Crucified One. I would suggest that a similar response of reticent fear and trembling is equally appropriate when we read the story of the crucifixion, if we have rightly followed Mark’s narrative clues about the identity of the one on the cross."

A Needed book on understanding the Bible

I am so frustrated with the majority of sermons I hear using the Bible as a fix-it manual ("how to fix your finances', 'how to fix your marriage', etc.). What I love about writers like Hays is that he shows us that (surprise! surprise!) the Bible is really about God, who he is and his plans to deal with an alienated world. Whether one agrees or not, Hays shows Jesus to be truly divine (somehow the Hebrew God in human form), plus shows that the New Testament cannot be fully understood without understanding the OT. This is a wonderful contribution to BIBLICAL hermeneutics as well.

Cutchin's does an excellent job in piecing pieces of this great puzzle together. Is not an easy task, but he manages to do an excellent job in opening up minds and elucidate those that have no clue. I am convinced that the answer, the final answer to the phenomena of UFOs, Bigfoot, fairies, etc, can never been known or explained...only perhaps when we move on and become more illuminated.

Well written exploration of a neglected niche in the paranormal. A fine collection of off-beat accounts and some conjectured explanations makes this a sure bet for open minded readers of the uncanny.

No Bullschijt, Just the Data

I've not read a tremendous amount of material within the Fortean genre. I suppose that this was my doorway. What has annoyed me about the Forteans in the past is their obsession with rehashing cases that have been done to death. You have one guy who is the believer and another guy who is the skeptic. They go on and on amused with their own wild speculations and systematic debunking of those speculations. The Fortean world is small and binary and lacking authenticity, lacking a broader perception, lacking any originality of thought, lacking self-awareness, lacking an awareness of high strangeness in the time that was before Roswell. Like many cultures they are blind to much of anything but their own in-house chattering.

Joshua's approach is uniquely humble, and uniquely insightful. Rather than trying to fit a meta-narrative over the data, rather than eisegeting - putting something onto the data, he has exegeted from the data - drawn out what is there. What is there is really weird. It took a Joshua to see what is there - below all the cultural chattering.

As you progress through the reports of interactions with entities you become aware of the patterns yourself, and connections within yourself begin to form. For instance, while reading, I recalled a dream I had in which I was given a piece of extremely sweet very pink strawberry cake with painfully sweet and sugary pink icing. As I ate it, I noticed it had worms in it as well as opium. I don't remember who gave it to me. I remember some of the setting. A grassy field, a stone wall, with a fire pit built into the wall.

Joshua saves his hypothesis for the end of the book. His hypothesis is not sensational, neither is it long-winded nor self-aggrandizing. It's concise and to the point, and rather disturbing. This book in itself is food for thought that will result in a change of consciousness. In many ways it's a distillation of decades of thought and experience. Even though Joshua has shown us the emergent patterns throughout an expansive amount of time, we are left with more questions than answers. I know that Joshua's seeking nature inevitably results in a continuing expansiveness that defies categories. This is the consequence of drawing out rather than placing upon. I eagerly await his second book.

I will say I wish that I had bought the actual book instead of the ebook. This is because there is a tremendously expansive bibliography and index. The amount of material drawn from is astounding. The ground covered here is breathtaking - and to follow the golden thread that ties them all together is just spooky; especially because it's so obvious now that it has been shown.

In closing something struck me as I read the last words of Joshua's. When we provide offerings ourselves, what, in recognition of this book, does that then suggest?

 I'm alive but I feel no life,
When the sun goes down,
the darkness arrives,
tearing my heart with a knife.

I have debts I remind myself,
 To my parents, my peers,
 to the divine himself;
I can't reclaim what I never owned,
For Life, it's not mine, but a loan I'm told.

Lonesome I sit in a crowded room;
There're many, but I'm in a cocoon.
Like a puppet, I smile and greet,
But I'm surely unknown to those I meet.
 A hush prevails, and it lingers longer,
For the abyss, it's growing stronger.

Empty as I am despite everything I need,
Devoid of passion and purpose in my deed.
There's a lull on the surface and a storm within.
A boy awaits, to be heard, to be seen.
Devoid of form, of life, of sight;
I wait for death to end my plight.

Listen to the voice, when she beckons,
With the sound of her lullabies, your soul awakens.
Take the road, the heart echoes,
Follow the wind wherever it blows.
I drive through the wilderness of the mountain;
My heart and mind open like a fountain.
The journey guides my soul,
Devoid of judgements, hatred or control.
The wind, the sun, the rivers, the trees,
In their beauty, the soul foresees.

Ravi is an alumnus of Delhi College of Engineering, New Delhi and Faculty of Management Studies(FMS), Delhi University, Delhi. Unlike his contemporaries, he chose to follow where the wind in his sails took him. Today, he is an author, educator and an entrepreneur and is the founder of Ravman OPC Pvt. Limited. Other than writing, Ravi is also passionate about music and traveling and feels that traveling has a deeper connection that is intertwined with a man's very own existence.

If you're looking for literary masterpiece go read Khaled Hosseini or Tolstoy and don't waste your time reading my review. However if you are ready to embark on an honest, trans-formative and no none-sense journey where the author bares his soul for you then go on. You'll not be disappointed.

I hate this book and detest the author for writing it. I've spent days coming up with reasons why I don't like the book. Here is why, the book is not a book, its journey. A dichotomy of being subtle and emphatic at the same time. A juxtaposition of external success and internal failure that all of us encounter. Superficially the transformation of the author is subtle, he learns how to ride, how to not be a pompous know-it-all and how to make friends. But the simplicity of his self discovery shouts out at the reader. Forces the reader to set the book aside and peep inwards. Ask uncomfortable questions. And I hate the fact that at this stage of my life I'm forced to ask myself these questions. To look inwards and ask myself what do I really want to do.

So if you want to know how would it be like to undergo a Kafka-ish metamorphosis but from an engineers point of view, you have found your gem.
Open your mind, start reading and be ready for a life changing experience!!

‘When the Road Beckons’ is a monumental book that I have come across after a long time. Earlier, they were Robert Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Che Quevara’s The motorcycle Diaries. But WTRB is quite different from the genres stated above. It is definitely a book that raises questions, but it does manage to give some direction in seeking those answers. It’s a book that would make you think, that would make you wander so that you can seek and then find the answers in this wilderness of life. Anyone who is caught in the conundrum of life must pick up a copy of When the Road Beckons, for that would be the first step towards seeking his ownself.

Really refreshing read

There are books and then there are a few books that emerge out of no where. A style of writing that is so unique that leaves you wanting to read more. 'When the Road Beckons' is a one of its kind book that is inspiring and entertaining at the same time. The story is narrative and the reader can vicariously put himself or herself in the shoes of the protagonist and as the journey unfolds the reader finds himself asking those very questions mentioned in this book. The book's message is fresh and inspiring for each of us to look for the path of our calling.
