Couldn't have been better

Although I've noticed that some reviewers tend to think that this book was a bit boring from time to time, for me it was just the right thing at the right moment. Mailbox is beautifully written and somewhat resembles "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret' by Judy Blume' but Sandy, the main character, has a lot more courage and personality when compared to other teenage characters I've come across over the years. She's feisty and independent and knows right from wrong and won't let be taken down by the critiques of bullies at home. I particularly enjoyed the relationship she had with her brother and parents up to the point I started wishing it would have been the same for me back when I was 13. There was a part where Sandy goes to a Haunted House along 13 other girls or so, and there's a creepy doctor that starts faking an experiment on one of Sandy's colleagues - I LOVED this scene. When things began to get super creepy, and Sandy thought the doctor would have wounded her colleague, Constance, she decided to jump right in and throw in some punches at that fake doctor. I laughed so hard when I read about a 13-year-old girl beating a creepy adult that I had to tell my boyfriend all about the scene because he didn't understand why I was chuckling so much. In other words, Mailbox just couldn't have been better for me.

Different style, interesting story collection.

Unusual, but interesting. This book wanders around, unless I missed the point, but provides insight into many human activities and ideas. It's a collection of stories and musings - charming but reflective of being a very bright pre-teen. One any parent would be proud to claim.

Well Worth the Read

This “scattershot novel” is a compilation of 76 different short takes on a variety of subjects seen from the point of view of a precocious thirteen-year-old girl, Sandy Drue. The mailbox referenced in the title is a box into which, over the previous few years, she has been putting scraps of paper with her observations about life. Now she has pulled them together into a composition of sorts.
The little stories themselves are a mix of funny, poignant, and astute interpretations of everything from religion to puberty to how unfunny haunted houses can be. She searches for the meaning of life while contemplating fireflies, loss of loved ones, and the questionable conduct of some of the adults around her. In true stream-of-consciousness behavior, she says whatever comes into her mind at the moment, punctuating her narrative of what’s happening now with an amusing aside or a quick definition of a word she thinks the reader may not know, then exuberantly popping back in to finish where she unceremoniously left off.
This novel is classified as Coming of Age rather than Young Adult, and I believe that’s wise. In true Judy Blume style, the author takes us into the thoughts of a preteen facing the physical changes of young womanhood and beginning to ponder her place in the world. Sandy’s voice is young—at times, she made me think of Junie B. Jones—and the stories she tells most likely have more nostalgic significance and appeal for mature adults than for teenagers who have recently moved out of that phase themselves.
I found this to be primarily a light read, quick, and fun. To say I loved it would be an overstatement, but it’s a very worthwhile read.

About the Author
Bob Mink served as summer youth minister and youth minister at two churches in Ohio, as minister of a small church in Philadelphia, and as pastor of a large church in Southern California. A graduate of Cincinnati Christian University, he also has graduate degrees from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Temple University. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Biblical Studies at Hope University in Fullerton, California. He is the proud father of a daughter and son and the proud grandpa of two grandsons. He also has a passion for playing golf.

Great book for future Pastors.

Pastor Bob Mink gives valuable insight in his book from 44 years of being a Pastor. He sheds some light onto areas of ministry that are often hidden from many in the church. Reading this book has allowed me to reflect on pursuing the role as a pastor and has given me great insight into what goes on when one chooses to be a pastor and how one deals with it. Pastor Bob allows himself to be transparent in the emotions of a Pastor and imparts much wisdom on how one may or may not deal with it. From a Pastor who has devoted his life to ministry work, I would highly recommend this book, not only to those who are currently in ministry but to anyone who is entering or considering this life as well. Pastor Bob shows that the only way to grow is to learn from each situation that comes our way, even when we do not agree with the comment or letter. Pastor Bob indicates in his book that with each letter he received, it was a chance for him to examine himself and see what he can learn from it in order to be a better pastor for the people and a better servant for the Lord. I appreciate Pastor Bob for writing this book for everyone who reads and benefits from it.

Insightful look at a Pastor's life!

What an insightful look into the life of a Pastor! We often don't know what goes on in the life and thoughts of a Pastor as he leads a Church. We can take for granted being 'fed' each week and leave only focusing on our own lives. These letters that Pastor Bob shared revealed the joys and sorrows, emotions and burdens of being in the position of a Pastor. I was encouraged reading this book and how I can help make a difference in the life of my Church and Pastoral staff. I loved how he shared some personal letters to his family. Being a Pastor certainly is a 'Calling' and one that I deeply respect. Other Pastors I'm sure could relate to these letters and stories shared by Pastor Bob. Church members would gain by seeing what goes on in a Pastor's work week, what he faces, decisions to make, challenges, compliments and criticisms. I highly recommend this book to see a real personal look of a Pastor, and how it could change the way you view and encourage your Pastor.

An excellent, basic, how-to manual for prayer from beginner to contemplative. I saw this book was recommended by Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange (hope I spelled that correctly) and when I purchased it, saw it came with an introduction by Augustin Poulain, S.J., both of whom are power-houses in their own right on prayer and mystical theology. Pope St. Pius X wrote a glowing letter of recommendation as well. Very old, and hence, very solid.

Angels, The Power of Prayer and Organ Donation.....Interested?

When I first started reading this book, my thoughts immediately jumped to Frank Peretti. I love his books and the way Beth Green introduces angels in her novel is very similar to what I expect to see from the master-of-spiritual-warfare-christian-fiction Frankie P.

As I progressed in the novel, Green maintained some Peretti flair, but, at the same time, she flowed into her own domain. This book is not only another fiction novel to add to your shelves. This book is a testimony that God is good. That God takes bad situations and uses them to reveal his gracious love.

I believe this story could be a salve for the soul to those who have lost someone dear to them. It communicates grief, regret, anger at God, and the good that can come out of choosing to donate your loved ones organs. It shows that everyone is different and it takes time to heal from those wounds. Green uses the perspective of angels to show that God is here for the grieving, something I believe those in pain need to hold on to.

A quick side note, I couldn't help but pick up on an overwhelming amount of imagery. For the purpose of avoiding spoilers in this review, I will not disclose details here. If you want to know my thoughts or have a book chat, feel free to contact me! I will say, however, that this realization pushed me from wavering between three and four stars to a strong four.

Why the wavering you ask? Ah, time for the constructive critiquing part of this review. Although this is a very well put together story, I got my hopes up when I made the connection to Frank Peretti. I expected more action than I received. I also think more could have been done with the demon named Bune. I felt like he kind of left me hanging.

A Wakeup Call

Since I was a little girl I have been enamored by stories. My best memories involve books: being read to by my mom who also loved stories, waiting beside the roadside for the book mobile to stop, reading Alice in Wonderland while buried under the covers when my mom didn’t know how to work the thermostat our first day in our first home with central air conditioning, and making it through those dreaded camping trips with the help of a stack of books. As an adult I discovered Christian fiction, stories that enlighten as well as entertain. I have always believed that God has a way of putting the right book in my hand at the right time. At times it is a book that has been on my shelf for years, and at others it is a book recently acquired. Some books are like the parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin (Luke Chapter 15), with a fairly easy theme to recognize. Others cause me to ponder at a deeper level and seek God’s wisdom, like the disciples in Luke Chapter 8, asking the meaning of the story. Others spark a longing to dig deeper into God’s Word looking for truth. A Rose for Jonathan is just such a book.
I belong to a closed Facebook group where Christian authors link up with reviewers. I saw a post from Beth Green; while her book looked interesting, it was the fact that she was located in Baker, Florida that caught my attention. I messaged her and asked to be considered for receiving a copy of the book to review, and asked whether or not she knew relatives that had lived in Baker. As it turned out she and her husband were vacationing there, but I believe God used this to place Beth’s book in my hand.
As I am reading a book for review, I’m always thinking about wording my review. As I got into A Rose for Jonathan, I was considering connecting with fans of Frank Peretti, Ted Dekker and maybe Randy Alcorn as the story is occurring in the earthly and spiritual planes. I was thinking about incorporating the underlying theme of the importance of organ donation. Then I was increasingly convicted that I was reading this book not as a way to promote Christian fiction, but because I needed a wakeup call in my prayer life. When I first retired I felt God’s call to spend significant amounts of time in prayer, and to pray utilizing Scripture. He gave me tools to assist me in this, one of the greatest being the book Prayers That Avail Much from Word Ministries, Inc. Over time I allowed a new kind of business to enter my life, and my prayer life changed. I continued to pray quite often, but my prayers lacked the intensity that they’d had early in my retirement, and they included less Scripture. To be honest they were less effectual, but as all things that happen gradually, it went unnoticed. That is until God, through Beth Green, gave me A Rose for Jonathan.
Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12 that we struggle against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. He instructs us in verses 13 through 17 to put on the full armor of God. Beth Green points out that some of the armor is defensive in nature: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, and the helmet of salvation. Our offensive weapons are the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God and prayer. Paul reminds us in verse 18 to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests, and that with this in mind to be alert and to always keep on praying for all the saints.
I most highly recommend A Rose for Jonathan. The story of Pastor John, his wife Lindsey, his daughter Rosie, and all those whose lives they touch will grip your heart. Indeed fans of Peretti, Dekker and Alcorn will be blessed to meet a storyteller who is their equal. Who knows, there may be a reason that God is bringing this book to your attention at this time, or it may simply be your time to enjoy a great read. Either way, I couldn’t recommend a better book.

I was asked to write a review of the book "A Rose for Jonathan" by Beth Strange Green. If you are a Christian and like to read AT ALL, you will enjoy this book. It reminded me of the first book I read about spiritual warfare (Frank Peretti's "This Present Darkness"). The infinite power of prayer was presented so well and inspired me to get even more serious about prayer in my life.
The book deals with a young family who face various life-changing difficulties. There is a strong thread of faith throughout that sustains them in their grief and in joy as well. The characters are people you might know, they are so well developed. The story is told with a range of humor, suspense, drama, and faith all rolled in together.
The author, Beth Green "The Green Author", is a pediatric physical therapist and brings her special affinity for children to the forefront as she discusses the subject of organ donation and transplantation. The story is woven in a masterful way and I highly recommend it for your next read.

The most intriguing idea - a must read for anyone interested in natural health

I've recently begun meditating, and while I'm still very much a novice, it has helped to calm and focus my mind quite a bit. Any natural way to boost mental and physical health is exciting to me, and though I've never heard of Mudras before reading this book, I was intrigued. What a fascinating concept! What a powerful idea! When explaining the practice, Clarke points out that "Our hands stimulate and influence out thought patterns," and from there, I was hooked. The descriptions of the Mudras poses are step-by-step, and she has great pictures for each one, so you really get it. She breaks them down into general mudras, mudras for physical health, to prevent and treat disease, for mental health, and for spiritual well-being. Her writing is clear and well-organized. Somemof the poses are complicated, and I can tell I'm going to need to work into sustaining the gestures for a beneficial time period, but just practicing each pose as I read along gave me a hint of the power behind the gestures. I'm eager to incorporate these into my budding meditation practice.

This is an awesome book. It takes practice but it really works. A great way to start your day. Loved the easy to read and follow format. The text and photos were "artfully" done and pleasing to the eye. This book is a wonderful tool for dealing with emotions. It gives lots of quick and easy techniques for helping the body, mind, and more. There are mudras for overcoming addictions, having patience, happiness, healing a broken heart, right speech, and many more. Great information! Highly recommended.

Great Guide on Mudras!

This book has taught me a lot about mudras! I have been wanting to learn more about spiritual healing and this book is perfect. There are many hand gestures listed inside on how to help you with pretty much anything in your life. I got this book to help with quitting smoking and stomach cramps and I followed the techniques listed inside of this book and it really helps! This book is amazing and I have learned so much. I highly recommend this book, it is helpful for everyone!

Mockingbird offers us gospel news for our weary souls, yet again. My favorite quote:

"While modern day Christian conservatives believe in original sin and the penalty of death and generally have all their doctrinal ducks in a row, they will quickly self-select our of the depraved category through 'sanctification' and out of the hell category through strong assurance of (their) salvation. And modern-day Christian liberals simply don't talk much about sin and death, viewing evil as less of a personal force and more of a justice problem. It is both: Our sin makes us guilty, and others' sin makes us victims. Sin is write though our entire world, from fights with your spouse and resentment of your boss to bigotry and systematic oppression. The problem of sin is a problem of self-elevation: Behind individual sins like adultery or greed lies the need to be more-than, to transcend the limits of the flawed, aging, finite people that we are."

If you find yourself (like I do) pulled in both directions, then join the club. This short book is a super accessible way to wrap your brain around the Gospel of Grace. I loved it.

This message is life changing

On February 20, 2010 a major shift occurred in my life. The pastor of my church read Galatians 5:20-21 which says “Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, jgrace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” I sat in the front of the church and wept. I think that was the day that I began to understand the difference between Law and Gospel.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, a new book, Law and Gospel: A Theology for Sinners and Saints, by William McDavid, Ethan Richardson, and David Zahl will provide a great introduction to the distinction. Briefly, God gave us both the law and the gospel but they have different roles. The law was never given as a means of salvation, the law was given to show each of us our absolute inability to live up to God’s perfect standard. It is the gospel, the good news that Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a sinless life, was crucified on the cross, and was raised again to new life on my behalf that provides the power to save. It is Jesus who did the saving.

The first half of the book is dedicated to exploring the role of the law and how it has overtaken many churches. From pulpits all over America, we hear messages of do more/try harder/pull yourself up by your bootstraps. But we fail, again and again. The law tells us what to do, but it is impossible for us to do it and so we stand accused. When people recognize their utter inability, lots of people give up.

But, like good sermons should do, the book begins with the crushing power of the law, but finishes with the life giving power of the gospel. The authors show us that because of Christ’s love for us, he alone accomplished our salvation as a free gift. Then, in my favorite part of the book, they looked at the fruits of the gospel, of what Jesus did. The fruits they listed include: humility, receptivity, gratitude, spontaneity, humor, and freedom.

If you have struggled to understand what Paul was talking about when he said that we are free in Christ, or what I mean when I saw the law/gospel distinction, please get this book.

I needed to know more about the Law and Gospel in a way that I could understand

I've had a chance to follow Mockingbird for a few years now. I love everything they have ever put out or written. They have a way of making the book or post very approachable to the everyday man.

Law and Gospel: A Theology For Sinners (and Saints) is one I would recommend to anyone who is dipping their foot into the well of grace. While the title of the book has the word Theology in it that should not Deter you from reading it. This book was written for in a way that everyone can get the concepts that are presented in the book.. You do not need a college degree in religion to understand anything in this book. I never had to pull out a dictionary or research hey word concept on Wikipedia to understand what the authors we're talking about.

If you are ready to try to understand Grace and how the law works I would recommend starting here.
