I like the book and some of the things in it. I have been practicing for a long time. I don't believe that you must take ritual bath for every spell. Who did the spell check in this book. Quite a few typos.

Another Book where Neo-Wicca is equated with witchcraft...

I was hopeful when I picked up this book. The cover made it seem that this was not going to be another book filled with Neo-Wiccan teachings about love and light and was actually going to be a book on witchcraft. However, I was sorely mistaken. From the very introduction of this book, Witchcraft is defined as Wiccan and using Wiccan principles. It is defined as having one be closely connected with nature and harmony and loving the Earth. Not all witches are interested in that or even connect with nature at all. It begins with dismissing Satanism as false as well as contrasting its definition of witchcraft with the Abrahamic faiths. There are plenty of Abrahamic witches out there thank you very much. It also provides false history about Wicca, insinuating that it is an ancient religion when in fact it has only existed since the 1950s. The book also mentions the rule of three, another Wiccan only concept. The partial Wiccan Rede is also brought up. It continues as such for the rest of the book.
In short, skip this book. It is filled with historic misinformation. It is another book that equates Wicca and witchcraft and shoves the Neo-Wiccan concepts down your throat. It feels like a Silver Ravenwolf book and that should be enough to make you close the cover and never open it again.

This is an essential book on witchcraft that has all the information you will need to get started. There are spells galore and advice on how to use them along with some warnings and tips. Keep this book on you shelf to refer to when needed for health, wealth and happiness. So if you need to heal, find love or dispel darkness then this is the book for you. Recommended reading.

About the Author
George G. Ritchie, Jr., M.D. (1923 - 2007) held positions as president of the Richmond Academy of General Practice; chairman of the Department of Psychiatry of Towers Hospital; and founder and president of the Universal Youth Corps, Inc. for almost 20 years. In 1967 he entered private psychiatry practice in Charlottesville, Virginia, and in 1983 moved to Anniston, Alabama, to serve as head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center. He returned to Richmond in 1986 to continue in private practice until his retirement in 1992.

It's a good introduction to the phenomena and a good start before ...

If you're new this sort of thing then it'll be an eye opener. If you've read books about this area then this one will be no surprise to you. If you're a skeptic then you're going to remain a skeptic because that's your religion. The book does not constitute proof, but it's an uplifting book that will provide hope to those who need it and who are willing to open their eyes. It's a good introduction to the phenomena and a good start before reading other, more extensive, studies of the field.

About the Author
Born on October 22, 1920, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Timothy Leary forged a career as a noted psychology professor and researcher before becoming a major, highly controversial advocate of psychedelic drugs during the 1960s. He was imprisoned on marijuana charges, yet escaped only to be caught. He later worked in entertainment and cybernetics and published many books. He died on May 31, 1996. Timothy Leary was born on October 22, 1920, in Springfield, Massachusetts, into an Irish-Catholic household. He went on to attend several schools before graduating from the University of Alabama in 1943 and earning a psychology doctorate in 1950 from the University of California at Berkeley. Working there as an assistant professor until 1955, Leary also developed a groundbreaking monograph, published in 1957, which explored interpersonal relationships via a complex model system. Yet Leary and his two children suffered great personal loss during this time period, when his first wife committed suicide. He subsequently worked as the director of the Kaiser Foundation and then accepted a lecturing position at Harvard University in 1959. Experiments With Drugs After taking mushrooms while in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Leary conducted behavioral experiments with psilocybin, an active ingredient of the fungi that was allowed for use in research. He worked with colleagues Richard Alpert and Ralph Metzner, and Leary's team and affiliated researchers used the drug in studies with seminary students, inmates and colleagues. Leary started to use LSD in the early 1960s. After a scandal when the university discovered students were also using his supply, Leary was discharged in 1963. Becoming an advocate for the use of psychedelic drugs, Leary established the International Foundation for Internal Freedom along with Alpert. Leary later converted to Hinduism after the two established IFIF organizational headquarters in Millbrook, New York, with a rich funder's support. Criticized Media Figure Leary, known for college lecturing, became a media icon with his much-quoted line, "Turn on, tune in, drop out." He published his writings, abandoned controlled research methods, and hung out with a number of countercultural and entertainment figures. Yet he faced criticism from various avenues for his role in exhorting youth to take LSD. Richard Nixon dubbed him "the most dangerous man in America," and both other media personalities and medical professionals decried the palpable damage his message inflicted. Arrest and Escape After declaring his candidacy for governor of California in 1970, Leary was arrested on marijuana possession charges and received a decade-long jail sentence. He broke free from prison with outside help several months later and traveled abroad before being recaptured in Afghanistan in 1973. He was re-imprisoned and was ultimately released by state governmental decree in 1976. Film, TV, Tech Leary resumed lecturing and, during the '80s, worked in a number of arts and entertainment jobs, including TV and film roles and stand-up comedy. He turned to tech-oriented pursuits as well, becoming a proponent of virtual-reality programs and helming the software companies Futique, Inc. and Telelctronics. Leary learned in early 1995 that he had terminal cancer, and decided to document his progression toward death via his website, He died on May 31, 1996, in Beverly Hills, California.

Leary's Neuro-Circuits via Tarot

Dr. Timothy Leary's book 'The Game of Life' (Part 4 of his Future-History Series) is by far one of his best and most accessible. Although, like most of his books, they are chaotic and disorganized and for the most part confusing, this book catergorizes Leary's own philosophy into the scientific-occult world of Aleister Crowley and Tarot. Leary begins with evolution and Darwin, along with Mendeleyev and his classification of chemical elements. Along with neurological thoughts of the nervous system, DNA, synaptic connections, I-Ching and Hindu Mythology. This is the first part, which may seem random and non-linear, he eventually connects all of this to the system of Tarot, which is the ancient occult divination practice in which picture symbols unconsciously give your brain suggestions in e-volving your DNA consciousness while in-volving your body/mind circuitry. Highly regarding Aleister Crowley's work in his "Book of Thoth" and his own Tarot deck, he understands that Crowley was on a similar path, only using different language. The second part is a chapter dedicated to each Tarot card alloting it its own intelligence in the chain of evolutionary process. Leary does expand the set giving it 24 major cards instead of the standard 22. An excellent book and highly reccomended to all!. At first glance this book may look like an issue of Mad Magazine, but once studied and practiced, it all comes together. Although its hard to appreciate on its own, I would suggest reading Crowley's own "Book of Thoth" along with it. Also reccomended is Leary's "Info-Psychology" in which he explains the 24 neuro-circuits more scientifically. And for an even more accessible view and understanding of Leary's 24 neuro-circuits is Robert Anton Wilson's "Prometheus Rising." These books together will give you a 3-Dimensional understanding and insight into the wisdom of the body/brain. This book also has contributiuons by R. A. Wilson.

An Evolutionary Masterpiece & Manual For Post Terrestrial Life

For a nominal fee: It Will Shock! It Will Amaze! Step right this way...

This is my favorite Timothy Leary book, and that's saying a lot when compared to the likes of The Politics Of Ecstasy, Neuropolitics, Exo-Psychology, The Intelligence Agents, Confessions Of A Hope Fiend, Flashbacks, etc. This is the one that ties it all together. Presented in sensational tabloid fashion, tongue-in-cheek, he masterfully combines and correlates the Periodic Table, chemistry, evolutionary theory, microbiology, psychology, Tarot, astrology, mysticism, religion, history, terrestrial politics, science-fiction, and so forth. An amazing bit of propaganda for progress and higher intelligence (sorely needed on this backward and primitive orb). He should have won the governorship of California and gone on to be President of these United States---not Reagan. This land would have turned out very very different (all kidding aside, man), and we might now be colonizing space (with H.O.M.E.s---that's High Orbital Mini Earths), the moon and Mars instead of talking about it. His laissez faire and mercantilist outlook would certainly have been better for the economy, to say the least, especially nowadays (argh!). More than a nod is given to such divergent luminaries, psychotics and "futants" as Aleister Crowley (whose scholarship, among others, was an inspiration for this book), Werner von Braun, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Edward Teller, Adolf Hitler, etc.

Each consecutive page is presented as a whole, that is (for one thing), they don't end with sentences that need to be completed on the next page. They are complete texts (along with whatever provocative titles and graphics that are attendant). This, as well as the fact that the book is roughly 8 1/2 X 11 inches, makes it ideal for those copy shop guerilla Intelligence Agents who like to make illicit postings in public places. I suppose that was the idea... (heh heh)

The book is not only immensely informative and inspiring---it is fun! Also, since he deals with his subject matter with patient good humour and high (sorry) spirits, it is absolutely hilarious. And though Leary treats terrestrial politics with the biting satire it so richly deserves, it is easy to see that he was quite serious about humankind's future and evolution, as symbolized in his oft referenced acronym S.M.I.L.E (Space Migration, Intelligence Increase, and Life Extension). The self-described "cheerleader for change" promoted his passion for space migration and evolution with the zeal of an evangelist and the skill of a mass media marketing wizard.

The Game Of Life is absolutely essential to any post-larval wondering what happened to the electric kool-aid 60s party.

And remember: INTELLIGENCE IS THE ULTIMATE APHRODISIAC.

The Einstein of Psychology will turn on your genius circuit.

An ultimate Trip Manual and yogic navigation guide. A Bible.
This is my favorite book and my second-most influential. It can literally turn on your genius circuit (the 7th circuit of the 8 described). It will seem ridiculous and mostly metaphorical until you realize that Timothy Leary (at least while he was 'high') was, and is, literally communicating here as DNA consciousness, aka the Word of God.
I think there are some small inaccuracies in the correspondences, but the scope of knowledge integration here is overwhelming. Your mind will blow and re-fuse relentlessly on the first and subsequent readings.
Like all scriptures, it will seed your mind with key ideas that will pop open and grow synergistically.
What other book sythesizes the key patterns in psychology, ontogeny and phylogeny, technological development, sociology, neurochemistry, physics, linguistics and yoga?
Leary himself never mastered the 8 circuits of consciousness he describes in The Game of Life, or he wouldn't have suffered from cancer or even old age. But he actualized and demonstrated the use of all 8 of these neurological systems in his lifetime and I suppose he is in the same business now in the Hyperlife.
Timothy Leary will be recognized as the Einstein of Psychology early this century. Did you know he wrote the seminal 'Interpersonal Diagnosis of Personality' in the 50's? And that was before he 'discovered' his brain and then his DNA via inter- and intra-neuronal yoga, using the biochemical keys that can be used to activate these domains of experience.
This book is real magic and is inspired by the Holy Spirit though it appears blasphemous. It is for many an initiation like the Gospel of John or Yogananda's Autobiography, and it reveals many of the same principles; though with more humor than either.

As a young apostolic man i have searched for a book that cross reference biblical characters into real life. I HAVE FOUND IT!...This book has given me insight into a new perspective and lessons on how to handle life situations. I enjoyed reading this book as much as I know a ladie would. Pastor Jacobs book has touched my life in many ways. I am not much of a reader, but I knew I just had to read this book. I literally finished the book in 3 days, that's how good it was. I couldn't put it down. I was eager to share the words Pastor Jacob had shared & blessed my life with, with some of the women in my life. Right now the book is being passed around in my family, & I cannot wait to get it back. I'm going to read it again! Absolutely love it!!

Buddhism for all kinds of people.

Buddhism is one of the few religions that I do not consider harmful to humans. This religion does not give anyone back, yet is not as well known as many others. What I liked most about this book, jumps at a glance: The information is very accurate and complete that it is not difficult to understand its basics. Beyond that, there is not a book that tries to force you to join Buddhism, but encourages you to take the aspects that can improve your lifestyle and extract the most profit of it.
From the teachings of Dukkha, to meditation techniques to achieve inner peace and Nirvana. This guide is exepcional and I enjoyed it. I recommend it.

For peace of mind and true happiness...

I knew what Buddhism is by watching movies, but after reading this book it's the opposite of what I knew and saw. Buddhism after all is a religion based on spirituality and attaining mental peace. Buddhism as what the book says it is the training of the mind to identify the roots of suffering in order to attain the ultimate goal of true happiness. It takes a lot of practice but when both mind and body work together harmony or peace will attain. It's simple to read that even the beginners like me could easily understand. Thumbs up for you John!

Great Book!..

Are you looking for a spiritual healing and enlightenment?. Then this book is perfect for your needs, it has 50 Buddhist teachings for happiness, spiritual healing and enlightenment. This book will help you understand Buddhism, its history, its branches, the different traditions, and festivals. There's a quote in this book that literally speaks of my experiences in life. "No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path." - Siddhartha. This quote says a lot about my life. I recommend this book to those people who wanted to achieve inner peace, to attain that heart felt happiness, and a different kind of spiritual healing. What's great about the author is that he wrote something about his previous life experiences before he discovered Buddhism that changed his life. One thing this book is different among the rest of the book that I had read is that the author personally included his own email address for those people who wanted to contact him to gain deeper understanding and knowledge towards the subject.

Growing up, growing older...life is constantly changing

Caroline MacAffee gets an unwelcome surprise on her 56th birthday when the powers-that-be decide that she's too old to continue hosting her home improvement show. The network is looking for "younger" and they have a new host in mind: Caroline's 29 year old daughter, Jamie.

The network's decision drives a wedge between mother and daughter and the fallout serves as a catalyst for both of them to reevaluate their relationship and the directions their lives are taking.

I'm a little torn on this one. Overall I enjoyed it, but I had a few issues (but we'll get to that later). First, let's start with the good stuff:

I like Caroline; it's refreshing to have a 50+ female character take on a major role in a novel. The author brings up issues that many women of a certain age can relate to, like being marginalized professionally and learning to negotiate the tricky terrain of mid-life romance. Well done.

I thought the author did an interesting job of exploring the complexities of the mother/daughter relationship. To me, Caroline and Jamie's relationship wasn't "close" as much as stifling. It's mentioned several times that Jamie has no friends and doesn't feel the need for any as Caroline is her BFF. I actually thought their post-riff relationship was healthier - adults treating each other as equals. I'd be curious to know how others viewed it.

As for the writing itself, Barbara Delinsky has been very successful for a long time, and there's a reason for that: she's a professional and it shows! From the technical things like sentence structure, grammar and dialog to the ability to execute a well thought out storyline, there's little here to quibble about. It's always a pleasure to read smooth and professional writing.

Now to Jamie: this is a character that I liked less as the story progressed. The author throws obstacles in her path only to have a white knight swoop in and smooth the way every time. I think 29 year old Jamie acted like a teen-ager, making impulsive (even reckless) decisions and yet there are never any negative consequences. Everything just neatly falls into place almost as if Jamie has a slew of fairy godmothers hovering close by lest she feel any anguish for more than half a day. Sheesh.

Finally, the entire story takes place over approx. a two week period, and this truncated time frame made some of the plot seem stilted and unrealistic. Characters simply abandon long-held beliefs basically overnight while others are dismissed as being unable to adapt to change after being given all of 5 days to do so! I just found it odd.

In the end I enjoyed this enough to go with a 4 star rating; it was a good read, but I didn't love it. You should probably know that because of the "HGTV"-like theme there are a lot of descriptions of houses and design style. I like that type of thing but I could see where some might find it tedious. There's little (if any) swearing/strong language and some very mild, non-explicit sexual content.

Always believe in the possibility of love finding its way to you

Caroline has the ability to take the worst that comes at her, reformulate her plans, and start again with new ideas better than the ones she thought were well constructed. She survived marriage to a man who traded her in for a younger version, built a career on her own as a carpenter, became a home rebuilding show host, and raised an amazing daughter in Jamie her show co-host and best friend. But change has a cruel way of expressing itself and when the show decides that she is too old to be the face of their home renovation show, Gut It! that was enough. Especially when she feels her daughter was part of the conspiracy to force her out of the picture and conspire to take her place in front of the camera. Feeling deceived by everyone she starts a pity party that extends until a tragic turn of events with her ex-husband and his wife has everyone taking a deep breath and questioning what tomorrow will bring.

Jamie thought her career was the driving force in her life along with her fiancé but the show and her job came way before a wedding which was on her to do list not a get done next list. She was the architectural brains behind McAfee Homes, a family business who produced one of a kind quality homes. Being the co-host on the show with her mom had been exciting and pushed her toward new heights but taking over was never a consideration and the fact that her mother believes she was working behind the scenes to boot her out was heartbreaking. Then everything takes a back burner to her half-brother, now orphaned as a result of the tragic death of her father and step mother. Taddy is two years old and needs someone there for him right now, and while she has always adored him mothering him is way out of her comfort zone. But there was no time for a learning curve as she walked out of her father's house as a mother to a child she was responsible for full time from that moment on. The problems became obvious with her lack of experience and a fiancé who wanted no part of this premade family. The holes in their relationship were too big to ignore especially when Jamie finds herself drawn to a single father who seems to flawlessly know how to manage life as a single parent. While Jamie was born responsible Chip had to grow in to it but the man he became over took whatever mistakes his youth had created. Showing Jamie the parenting ropes and trying to help her see the way through the chaos that is single parenting they grow close and realize that what might take other people years to establish they have united in a week.

The rift between mother and daughter finds its own balance as Caroline stokes the fires of a flame she never expected to catch fire let alone burn so strong. Dean is a man she has known at McAfee Homes for so long she felt he saw through her not quite so deeply into her soul that they were one in the same. Having carried a torch for her so years, Dean decides it is time to push the envelope and see where his heart mixed with Caroline's can take them, and take them right into an amazing relationship is exactly where he wants to be. So together they explore life as a man who loves dogs and a woman with three alpha cats not quite ready to give up their space to an interloper. Caroline is not feeling so old now!

Readers are drawn to the characters, enthralled by the romance, moved by the story, and longing for the story to never end. What a wonderful experience every Barbara Delinsky book is, and this one proves the tradition continues

Waste Of Time.

This book was just an absolute drag in terms of pacing. Also, there just was not much going on in terms of plot. It was all talk, talk, talk on every page. And the men in this book were so totally unbelievable. They were all saints and they spoke in terms that no man that I have ever known would talk. On and on and on about their feelings. In fact so did the women.

I thought I would enjoy this one since it was based on a family business that had a television show not unlike that of the PBS "This Old House" or the HGTV show "Rehab Addict". However, the book dealt with very little about the family business and was so overloaded with everybody talking about their feelings that I was just bored to tears. However, I persevered and completed it up to the very end where the last few pages dealt with one of the family members dealing with very big issues. And that issue was the making of cole slaw. Yep you got it - cole slaw.

I found one discrepancy that the editors missed and these little things bug me when reading. On one page the color and the cut of a woman's blouse was the main focus and that color was brown. A few pages later, the color was navy. It is a small thing but I hate mistakes like this.

Save your reading time for much better books. In fact, read one of Delinsky's older books, "A Woman Betrayed". Now that is a good book but not this one.

About the Author

After an idyllic Canadian childhood in Kingston, Ontario, Peter Jonker now resides in Grand Rapids Michigan where he is currently the Minister of Preaching and Worship at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church.  Before that he was pastor at Woodlawn Christian Reformed Church, also in Grand Rapids. He is married with three teenage children.

Practical and Encouraging

I read portions of this book for my classes at Calvin Theological Seminary. I was so moved by what I read that I went on to read the other chapters as well. I'm passionate about good preaching -- preaching that connects to people on a very deep level. This book details how to use a controlling image to accomplish that goal. More that theoretical, this book is intensely practical. And more than practical, this book is encouraging. It is one pastor telling another how to overcome one of the biggest challenges in the act and craft of sermon creation. I'm deeply grateful for it.

Preaching in Pictures

I really liked Preaching in Pictures. I am not a pastor or minister but a lay person who trains spiritual formation facilitators, etc. There are many, many suggestions in the book on how to put a lesson together in a more meaningful way than we have been doing. I am more excited about helping our facilitators for the coming season in how to best prepare their material for group discussions, etc., and lessons to come. A very good teaching/facilitating aide.
