This is a great book to read if you want to know more social skills in a simple ways and instantly build connections with people. I also learn here how confidence could bring you to places and meet new people. He'll go on and on with stories about tree-hugging or metaphors involving raw potatoes; he'll tell you how to eat mindfully, even how to breathe and walk; he'll suggest looking closely at a flower and to see the sun as your heart. As the Zen teacher Richard Baker commented, however, Nhat Hanh is "a cross between a cloud, a snail, and piece of heavy machinery." Sooner or later, it begins to sink in that Nhat Hanh is conveying a depth of psychology and a world outlook that require nothing less than a complete paradigm shift. Peace is not external, so we do not need to chase it. Peace is already present but we have to get in touch with it. This is attained through mindfulness: living in the present moment, in the here and now. Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen master and spiritual leader teaches mindfulness through conscious breathing and smiling. Connecting the body and mind, to find peace and happiness even in the most unlikely situations. Breathing and smiling! Is that it? You may be as skeptical as I was before practicing this exercise: breathe in, while reciting " breathing in I calm my body" then breathe out while smiling and reciting "breathing out I smile" do this three times! This is a very easy yet very effective exercise, do this often enough, in any position at any time (sitting, lying, driving, walking, before you eat, before you wash the dishes, when you hear the phone ring....) and enjoy being calm, relaxed and peaceful.
The author teaches us to be mindful of the people in our life, of the food we eat and of the environment around us.... Turn off the TV and instead walk in the park, visit a good friend, sit down for a meal with family or friends or even by yourself but before you dig in, breath smile, appreciate the food on the table, then eat mindfully, be aware of the taste, the smell, the texture, even if its only a bowl of rice, be happy, be thankful. He also teaches how to transform unpleasant feelings like anger for example into something more wholesome like understanding, using a 5-step method. By practicing understanding and loving speech instead of blaming and arguing we can help each other be happy. By knowing the true nature, the essence of the people around us we can enjoy each other. Mindfulness should lead to proactivity. We must be aware of the real problems of the world and of the suffering around us, and then with mindfulness we will know what to do to be of help.
This book is written clearly and beautifully. Full of inspiring stories and parables, meditations and practices, reflecting the author's wisdom and experience. Terrific and extremely effective, will make you calm and happy just reading it, then breathe, smile and be peaceful!

Peace Now is NOT Merely a Slogan

Hanh's book is a wonderful exhortation for all of us to find deep sprirituality in the midst of what we are NOW, what we do NOW, and simply the moment we call NOW. I greatly admire this Buddhist author's humility. He does not say "follow in my footsteps," but rather invites us to walk alongside him, and discover our own paths to "mindfulness." This is a very welcome change of pace from all the "spiritual" books that attempt to sell the author's own beliefs about God, or worse yet, attempt to promote the financial well-being of the author. Hanh has the resume to prove his sincerity -- having taken great risks to urge reconciliation at a time when the U.S. and Vietnam were torn by violent conflict. He adheres to the Zen tradition of making no demands on what people choose to believe, or what religion they should practice. "Peace Is Every Step" is a well expressed invitation to join him in this sincere spiritual quest.
A word of caution though -- you are not likely to benefit from the book unless you actually *practice* the techniques Hanh so eloquently describes. However, if you do, you will find peace, because it is already there inside of you. (And his other books are very much worth reading too!)

Begin Your Journey of Awareness

This book seems very simplistic on the surface, with what appear to be standard Eastern metaphors encouraging inner peace and awareness. Some examples are stories about meditating on a falling leaf or retreating to a quite room in your house. But as you make your way through the book and think about what you're reading, you'll find that Nhat Hanh is actually using these simple stories to make very profound points about how you can embark on a journey of inner peace. And this is serious inner peace as the Buddhists continually strive for, not just the stereotypes that you hear from Western folks who only see this stuff as a fad. Nhat Hanh describes how you can find serenity in the most mundane of activities, such as washing dishes, walking, eating, and even breathing (the breathing techniques he describes are also a key component of Yoga). His techniques for managing anger, depression, and frustration are incredibly useful and should be practiced by far more Westerners. The only flaw in this book is in some sections of Part 3, in which Nhat Hanh attempts to move these techniques from your inner world to the outer world, and contends that these methods of inner awareness can help solve the world's problems or war, hunger, crime, etc. if everyone just practiced them devoutly. He may be right about that, but this is far too idealistic for the real world, even if his Eastern interpretation is far more humane and open-minded than the Western view. Other than that minor flaw, I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a way to cut down on stress or anger, and would like to improve your mental and emotional health.

(Government forces attacked her car when she and others were leaving the university.) Then there is the doctor who died. John of God intervened, bringing him back to life. These and other stories describe people that have traveled to the Casa as they deal with physical conditions that restrict one's functioning and are life threatening. However, "John of God and The Casa of Love" goes beyond these shared personal experiences as it looks at healing, whether it's spiritual or through traditional methodologies. We learn that one's attitude and outlook on life relate to a positive outcome, with forgiveness being an important component. No matter what it is that someone may have done to us, we need to forgive them. Part of this is also to forgive ourselves for whatever it is that we may have done to others. About the Author
Dick Selby has traveled to Brazil and John of God nine times. When he is with John of God, Dick is classified both as a tour guide and as a son of the Casa. As a son of the Casa he is expected to sit close to John of God during healing process. Dick's spiritual presence and meditations help in the overall healing that goes on at the Casa. Dick is both a Licensed Marriage, Family Therapist and a Licensed Educational Psychologist. Dick was a school psychologist for the Los Angeles Unified School District and twice received the prestigious "School Psychologist of the Year Award." He spent 17 years at Garfield High School, a school made famous by the movie "Stand and Deliver. Dick has written a variety of books about his experiences at Garfield, beginning with "A School Psychologist in East L.A." There are two other books: "Garfield High School, Home of the Bulldogs," and "Garfield High School, 1995." Dick has also written a book about his high school and what happens 50 years after graduation, "1963, Oceanside High School."

A must read for anyone desiring to know the impact John of God is making

I loved "John of God and the Casa of Love." So much so that my wife and I read this book in a weekend. Dick is a master at interviewing people to capture their deepest thoughts and feelings. The book gave me a good sense of the impact John of God is having on people's lives. It has inspired me and my wife to visit this special man and this special place some day soon.

John of God and the Casa of Love is a book written with love. One feels love oozing out of every page. Each person interviewed by Dick Selby speaks from actual experience of the healing and love expressed by John of God and the spiritual entities that work with him. Dick is not only an excellent writer but an official tour guide for group visits to the Casa for those in hopes of receiving healing from John of God and all the Casa has to offer. John of God, himself, says that only God does the healing. Miraculous cures and recoveries from life threatening illness are described in great detail in the interviews lovingly conducted by the author, Dick Selby. He also explains why some people receive physical healing and some do not, He also says that the healing at the Casa occurs on three levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual.
One unique aspect of this book among many others about John of God, is the quote at the beginning of each chapter. These are quotes from the book, "Letters from J, the Expanded Life of a Coma Patient," by Bernice Mead. The spiritual wisdom and sage philosophical truths of these quotes are the perfect touch to begin each chapter.
Another added bonus is found in Chapter 7, "Jon (Ron) Paris, Living Compassion and Love." This chapter outlines the teachings by which Jon lives his life and it describes an amazing visualization to aid in healing relationships. I know from my own personal experience and that of a friend that this visualization has marvelous healing powers.
Whether you're simply curious about John of God or you're contemplating a visit to the Casa in Brazil, I highly recommend reading this book. "John of God and the Casa of Love" is one of the best, most inspiring and enjoyable books I've ever read!

This book is worth 5 stars for its in depth inspirational account of different peoples journey for healing to john of God
I feel many people will enjoy reading about not just the incredible healing that takes place but the every day life and truth that we are all connected one to each other brothers and sister travelling this world together helping each other through the difficult times that we have to go through to reach a better understand of who we are
letting go of the old ways to make way for the new
The more people that realisation that love is the key
knowing one self and sharing that blessings with many others
for it is love that will bring us home and bring us into full awareness & awakening of our divine self enjoy every moment namaste

Listening with the Heart

"Want to know the best advice I ever heard?" asked Larry King, in an interview published today in Canada's National Post newspaper: "I never learned ANYTHING while I was talking." 50 years experience at the interviewer's microphone and Larry's best advice comes down to one word. "Listen!"

Coincidentally (or maybe not!) I picked up this just-received book, sent to me by a dear friend who recalled my reviewing an earlier published edition of this same "Ronald Knox translation." And it literally fell open to these words,

"By all means ask questions, but LISTEN to what holy writers have to tell you . . . often enough, (when we hear) Holy Scripture, we are distracted by mere curiosity; we want to seize upon some point and argue about it, when we ought to (listen) and move on."

I flipped open "The Imitation" just now and my eyes (lately fixated on my newest pride and joy were these: (p 32 under the heading, "ABOUT SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND HOW TO GET RID OF SELF-CONCEIT")

"It is nonsense to depend for your happiness on created things (and) why all this self-importance? Do not boast of riches, if you happen to possess them . . . nor about the important friends you have; boast rather of God's friendship.

"Do not give yourself airs, if you have physical strength or beauty; it only takes a spell of illness to waste the one, or mar the other. Do not be self-satisfied about your own skill or cleverness; God is hard to satisfy, and it is from him that they come, all these gifts of nature.

"He reads our thoughts, and will only think the worse of you, if you think yourself better than other people. Even your good actions must not be a source of pride to you: If you have any good qualities to show for yourself, credit your neighbor with even better qualities: that is the way to be humble.

"To be humble is to enjoy undisturbed peace of mind, while the proud heart is swept with gusts of envy and resentment."

Seven years ago (on my birthday actually) I wrote my very first review for Amazon.com -- for an earlier re-print of this same translation. This latest version, from Ignatius Press of San Francisco, is far-and-away the most beautiful and features cover art by Andrea Solario (1480-1540) from the "Galleria Borghese, Rome" -- painted about a century after Thomas a Kempis produced his "Imitation." Inside artwork includes some marvelous, same-period woodcuts by Albrecht Durer.

In his (2005) FOREWARD to this new edition, psychologist and priest Benedict Groeschel (seen by millions on his "Sunday Night Live" TV show on EWTN) recalls stealing his first copy of the "Imitation" from the public library in his Caldwell NJ hometown - slipping it into his schoolbag intending to return it "to its rightful place on the shelf, in two weeks time, the ordinary period for a book loan in those days."

"The title suggested to my 12-year-old mind that this must be a story about someone who pretended to be Jesus. I went and sat by a window . . . the spring sun (shining) on the oak table, I can still see my blue-sweatered arm around the book as I began to read:

"'Vanity of Vanities - all is vanity except to love God and serve him alone.' At that moment I was electrified, and I sat there reading page after page . . . . for two hours, mesmerized by the book!"

As for the translation? Is it really the best-ever? I stand by my thoughts of seven years ago:

"I have several translations of the Imitation but I keep coming back to this one. I believe many readers will find this translation 'flows' better than the others, written as it is in a warm, gentle and accessible style by a master translator and communicator, Monsignor Ronald Knox. A convert to Catholicism who produced an acclaimed Latin-to-English translation of the Bible, Knox completed the first 30 or so chapters of the Imitation before his death in 1957. He wrote to Michael Oakley, two months before his passing: "If I die without finishing my translation, please tell my executors that you are to finish it." The younger Latin scholar did a splendid, seamless job of completing Knox's superb translation of what was--until this century--the second most widely read book in the world. What a delight that this version is once again available, [50 years] after its first publication. If you purchase only one copy of the Imitation in your lifetime, make it this one."

The way to happiness and peace

As a pastor I see so many people who are miserable. They are depressed, filled with worry and have so little joy in their lives. This book speaks specifically to those problems.
In a nutshell this book says that we are miserable because we are trying to find joy in other people and in other things and everything out there will fail us and let us down. The only thing that provides true happiness, peace and contentment is God. The Imitation of Christ goes through exercises on how we can detach ourselves from worldly things to focus on God. Once we are focused solely on God and have the faith that God will provide everything we need, then we can really enjoy the world around us. Enjoy it because once we receive true happiness from God we can see how beautiful the world is and enjoy it as the gift God created it to be, instead of something that we grab onto in the hopes that it will provide us our happiness and security.
