“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” and “a fountain of life” - the foundation on which all wisdom rests, as well as the source from whence it emanates. Upon a principle so vastly important, all the subtle malignity of Satan has been directed, if possible to mislead the very elect; while the ungodly and impenitent fall under his devices. To the mind enlightened by Divine truth, the difference between a filial fear of offending God and the dread of punishment is very plain. Still, by the devil’s sophistry, some of the most pious Christians have been puzzled and bewildered. Bunyan was not ignorant of Satan’s devices, and he has roused the energies of his powerful mind, guided by Divine truth, to render this important doctrine so clear and easy to be understood, that the believer may not err.
This rare volume, first published in 1679, soon became so scarce that Chandler, Wilson, Whitefield, and others, omitted it from their editions of Bunyan’s works. At length it appeared in the more complete collection by Ryland and Mason, about 1780. Since then, it has been reprinted, somewhat modernized, by the Tract Society, from an original copy, discovered by that ardent lover of Bunyan, the Rev. Joseph Belcher. Of this edition, four thousand copies have been printed.

About the Author
John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher who is best known for his allegorical novel The Pilgrim s Progress, published in 1678. Bunyan s faith was profoundly influenced by two books owned by his wife: Arthur Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety, and he turned to preaching following the death of his guide and mentor, John Gifford. The restoration of the monarchy of Charles II of England marked England s return to Anglicanism, and Bunyan s freedom to preach was curtailed. He was arrested numerous times for preaching without a licence, and was finally imprisoned for the offence in November 1660. Bunyan was released from prison in January 1672 and resumed preaching (as permitted under the Declaration of Religious Indulgence) until his death in 1688.

Understand why the greatest power in the universe loves you.
By K. McLeod
John Bunyan's book, 'The Fear of God' is an excellent study of the holiness of God and why man, even saved men, should fear him. The author, grounded in biblical truths, illustrates to the reader just how holy, powerful and awesome God is. He also shows us just how insignificant we are in comparison to God. Then, after the author has striped us of all our false pride he shows us how God sees us. From here he once again lays out the plan of salvation and why God has chosen this manner of redemption for humanity.
After reading this book you will grow to fear God not as a inconceivable power that will consume you, but as a loving father. Any loving child fear's their father. They fear the look of regret and disappointment they see in their father's eye when they disappoint. This is the fear that John Bunyan's book brings to light in such a marvelous and inspiring way.
An excellent book for anyone wrestling with the concepts of an all powerful yet forgiving God. A must read for every growing Christian in today's world.

A Pearl of a Book
By NAVY JACK
An unexpected pearl of a book. I sampled this book in preparation for teaching series on the subject of God Fearing Men, and ended up reading the whole thing in two sittings. I am blown away by the depth and orderliness of Bunyan's mind - - to think that he was a "mere" soldier and a tinker, a "commoner" who was imprisoned for his boldness in witnessing to the Gospel - - his beautiful mind is a testament to the GOD GIVEN WISDOM we Christians so desperately need. The archaic language can be a challenge, but it is worth it! I found that it actually forced me to focus more intently on the words.

A Grace That Preserves
By Joseph J.Adrian
What is a sure distinguishing mark that someone does not know the Lord? Romans 3:18 'There is no fear of God before their eyes.' If this grace is not present in an individual, that cannot be one who loves God.Bunyan rightly asserts-"no man brings this grace into the world with him."There is a mighty change which must first take place, for this grace to be seen in a person's life.It is also a certainty that where there is no fear of God,that pride and arrogance is sure to be present.
The Christian's fear of God is a filial fear-"that fear that is son-like,and that subjecteth the elect unto God." The fear of God is a grace and where it is present its effect is a willing submission to the God whom they love and fear.Where does this fear come from? What is its source?-Jeremiah 32:40b '...I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.' This is God speaking through the prophet Jeremiah,I(that is God)will put His fear in their hearts.
Where there is godly fear in good measure, then, this is an individual who excels before God and men. When Satan was throwing 'his fiery darts' of accusation, towards Job;what specific characteristic about Job did the Lord bring to light?Job 1:8 'Hast thou considered my servant Job,that there is none like him in the earth,a perfect and an upright man,one that feareth God,and escheweth evil?' Bunyan writes of this godly fear in Job-"...he was the man that abounded in the fear of the Lord...'.How can someone know the measure of this grace in their own heart?Job feared God and eschewed evil.David in Psalm 4:4a '...stand in awe and sin not...'. There is an inseparable connection with fearing God and hating and turning from evil. There is also an inseparable tie in with fruitful service to God and one's attitude towards sin,Is there a holy hatred of It? To fear God and to hate evil is to possess great wisdom, heavenly wisdom.Fools exalt folly and think sin is a light thing.
What is one of the ways an individual becomes more godly? By growing in their hatred of sin.Solomon illustrates this in Proverbs 26:20 'Where no wood is,there the fire goeth out.' -"...where there is a hatred of sin,and where men depart from it,there it loseth much of its power."
What has God given us to direct our fears? One appropriate response is to 'tremble at His Word'.Another believing response is to delight in His Word.Psalm 112:1 '...blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.' How is any man to escape the wrath and judgement of Almighty God that is surely coming? Mr.Bunyan gives us the path of safety-"the way to escape dangers foretold is to hearken to,understand, and fear the Word of God." It is great wisdom 'to heed God's Word' because His power and authority attend it.Ecclesiastes 8:4 'Where the word of a king is,there is power:and who may say unto him, what doest thou?' Whose word is more powerful and authoritative than 'The King Of Kings' and 'Lord Of Lords'?
Though Bunyan did not have the benefit of advanced and refined education,as many of his Puritan brethren did,due to his humble beginnings, yet the written legacy which he has left behind, surely places him in the front rank,of his Puritan contemporaries,as far as usefulness and value.
