I Will Pour Forth of My Spirit: A Brief Commentary on Acts, by Mac Deaver

This little book is an effort to see the involvement of the Holy Spirit in the initial period of the early church. We will not be going into as much verse by verse analysis as perhaps some might desire, but we will, along with some textual analysis, be analyzing what the chapters present to us with special attention being given to what Luke is telling us about the involvement of the Holy Spirit in the accounts of action that compose his book. We will try to piece together what the complete picture is and explain why some of the details as given by Luke’s treatment of the Spirit are as they are. I will be using the chapter outlines as contained in our first Acts study book in 1985, but the text and questions are new. I will not stop to give full defense of comments made regarding Holy Spirit baptism as it is recorded in the various chapters of the book of Acts. That conclusive and elaborated defense is presented in our book, Except One Be Born from Above, which the reader is encouraged to consult. This study book is based on the conclusion proven in that book that when anyone in any century enters the kingdom, it is by baptism in water and in the Holy Spirit (John 3:3-5). If any man has entered the church—or, kingdom—he has entered in the way that the apostles and all others entered in the first century. All cases of kingdom entry recorded by Luke in Acts are the same in the “essentials.”

Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard, by Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad’s thrilling history of a fictional South American country, its precious resources, and the men who will decide its fate

The fictional country of Costaguana, loosely based on Colombia, has suffered a long string of despots more interested in lining their pockets than strengthening the nation. Discontent simmers throughout the land, but in the major port city of Sulaco, industry chugs along. Keeping the silver flowing are capable men like Nostromo, a loyal and proficient longshoreman for the shipping company that transports boatloads of the precious ore. When an unexpected military coup shakes up the country, Nostromo finds himself entrusted with hiding an untold fortune from the encroaching revolution. Nostromo must balance his loyalty to Sulaco’s industrialists against the country’s financial health and the intentions of the insurgents.

In this intricate novel, Joseph Conrad combines politics, adventure, revenge, and revolution to illustrate how power and money can corrupt even the most righteous of men.

From Library Journal
This involved, philosophical novel is not for the casual listener, especially one who is supposed to be concentrating on the road ahead. Writing in 1904, Conrad invented a complex South American country with a turbulent history and a potentially explosive population, ranging from the wealthy gringo running the Sulaco silver mine to the poorest worker loading cargo on the docks. Although the story teems with lively characters, the dazzling figure of Nostromo eclipses them all. A natural leader?brave, handsome, and incorruptible?he naturally becomes the epicenter of the revolution that soon devastates Sulaco. With characteristic eloquence, Conrad has focused on the dramatic action of the revolution to explore challenging themes: capitalism, imperialism, revolution, and social justice. Unfortunately, this audio program, read by Frederick Davidson, is disappointing. Despite fine dramatic characterizations, the narrator's posh British accent is so pronounced that it often detracts from the text. Since Nostromo has also been narrated by Frank Muller (Recorded Books) and Wolfram Kandinsky (Books on TapeR), perhaps this version may not be the best choice.?Jo Carr, Sarasota, Fla.

Review
`I had always thought that there were books you read to entertain yourself and classic books to educate you, but with Nostromo I realised a book could be both.' Billy Ivory, Nottingham Evening Post

`one of the greatest, if least frequently read, of 20th-century classics ... epic in scope, with its large cast of characters and numerous political upheavals' Times Educational Supplement

Review
"Ruth Nadelhaft's new edition of Nostromo is a timely addition to the Broadview Editions series. Without neglecting the traditional critical and biographical approaches, the supplementary materials and lucid introduction place Conrad's difficult masterpiece fully and clearly within its contemporary contexts (especially the events surrounding the Panama Canal project), and in relation to our own debates about imperialism, colonials, and alleged racism in Conrad's work. Broadview's Nostromo, like its companion volumes, is truly a text for the way we teach now." (David Latane Jr. )

"Nadelhaft negotiates the impasse between existential and political responses to the book. In reaffirming that the personal is the political, she demonstrates how Nostromo represents the process whereby 'imperialism transmits the virus of alienation.' Joined with the historical apparatus so characteristic of Broadview Editions, such theorizing genuinely reopens a book that hasn't yet received its due." (Michael Coyle )

"Costaguana will always be run by butchers and tyrants."
By Mary Whipple
Often regarded as Conrad's masterwork, Nostromo is also Conrad's darkest novel, filled with betrayals at all levels and offering little hope for man's redemption. A novel of huge scope and political intrigue, it is also a novel in which no character actually wins. All must accept the ironies which fate has dealt them. Setting the novel in the imaginary South American country of Costaguana, the story centers around a silver mine in the mountains outside of the capital, Sulaco, vividly depicting its allure and the price each character pays for its success.
When Charles Gould, returns from England to claim and reopen the rich silver mine he has inherited from his father, he has good intentions-- to provide jobs for the peasants and contribute to the economy of the town at the same time that he also profits. Soon, however, he becomes obsessed with wealth and power, and as the political climate gets hotter, he must pay off government officials, bandits, the church, and various armed revolutionaries to be able to work. Each of these groups is vividly depicted as working for its own ends and not for the good of the people, and with their goals focused on the real world, these characters have no self-awareness, nor do they develop it during the novel.
In contrast to these "unrealized" humans, Conrad presents several characters who develop some self-awareness through their experiences. Nostromo, a local legend, is a man of principle who has always kept his word. Martin Decoud, a newspaper man, is a nihilist who has editorialized against the revolution, though he has yet to test himself. Dr. Monygham, captured during a past revolution, broke under torture, and is now seeking absolution by fighting against this revolution. And the good and long-suffering wife of Charles Gould, Dona Emilia, who has lost her husband to his silver mine, now devotes her life to helping others.
When Nostromo agrees to protect a load of silver from revolutionaries by taking it out to sea, he takes Decoud with him, leaving him on an island with the silver when they almost sink. Decoud's reaction to his isolation, and Nostromo's reaction to the treasure that is suddenly "his," provide a dark commentary on idealism and human nature. In the conclusion, which includes a love story that feels tacked on, Conrad's darkest self is revealed, offering little hope of change and even less hope for man's redemption. Rich in atmosphere, vibrant in description, filled with characters representing all walks of life and philosophy, and set in a country where revolution is a way of life, the novel is full of dark portents and bleak political outcomes. masterwork from a master writer
By Bruce Kendall
Conrad is my favorite 20th century author, so I am biased. The reviewer who compared him to Tolstoy was on the money. Both lived lives that gave them fodder for their fiction; Tolstoy as a soldier in the Crimean war, an aristocrat facing the turbulence of the political and social upheavals of fin-de-siecle Russia, and Conrad as a mariner and a Polish transplant who carved out a language and a career for himself in England. Nostromo contains some of the most vividly realized characterization, plot, and sensory detail of any novel ever written in the English language, period. Do not pay any attention to a customer whose review is based on listening to the audio tape version. It doesn't do the book justice and is indeed labored to the extreme. I would also hope that readers do not form their opinions from the BBC film. It is infinitely shallow by comparison to this rich work. While the "eponymous" character remains purposefully enigmatic, the other inhabitants of Costaguena are stereoscopically fleshed out. We are on intimate terms with the Goulds. We know Decoud's innermost thoughts. It's true that Decoud is the central character of this novel. His isolation and mental defragmentation is Conrad's arguement for and refuation of existentialism. We are all islands, yet no man is in island. Take your pick. This is a very large piece of fiction. Do not approch it as you would some best seller. It's not going to entertain you on every page. What it will do is reward you in riches that can never come cheaply. Yet it is not like Finnegan's Wake, where you have to have your Boedekker's guide to see you along your journey. It's also a great adventure story, with a larger than life hero. If I could suggest one book to represent the most finely crafted novel of its era, this would be it.

A story of the silver coast
By A.J.
Joseph Conrad is one of the most effortlessly cosmopolitan writers in the English language, and "Nostromo" finds him in a fictitious South American country called Costaguana whose mountains are a bountiful resource of silver. And Conrad is probably the only writer who can transform his novel's hero from an all-around tough guy to a heroic savior to a sneaky thief to a tragic victim of mistaken identity through plausible twists of fate without ever letting the story fall into disarray.
The main action of the novel takes place towards the end of the nineteenth century in a town called Sulaco, which is the base of operations for the San Tome silver mine up in the nearby mountains. The administrator of the mine is an Englishman named Charles Gould, whose primary challenge is to find American and European speculators to invest money to keep the mine in business. The other problem he faces is a civil war between the present government and a faction of rebels led by a general named Montero. Gould's wife Emilia is a prominent figure in town, an elegant matron with a philanthropic attitude towards the downtrodden native mine workers and townspeople.
The hero, Nostromo, is an Italian sailor who settled in Costaguana for more lucrative work and is now in charge of keeping the dockworkers -- the "cargadores" -- in line. When Montero's troops invade Sulaco, Nostromo and Martin Decoud, an aristocratic Frenchman who runs Sulaco's newspaper, escape on a boat with the town's silver treasury to protect it from the marauders. Their boat is sideswiped and damaged by a ship commanded by a rebel colonel named Sotillo, and they are forced to moor on a nearby island and bury the treasure there. This island is the future site of a lighthouse to be maintained by the Violas, an Italian family whose patriarch, Giorgio, once supported Garibaldi and still reveres the man like a deity. There is obviously much more to the plot, too much to reveal in this review, and there are many additional important characters, but these are best left for the potential reader to discover.
Narratively, Conrad keeps the story moving with plenty of action and suspense combined with the typical excellence of his prose. Structurally, though, is how Conrad's novel intrigues its reader: He frequently shifts viewpoints, in both place and time, to give the effect of different perspectives of both the immediate events and the long-term history of Sulaco. Contemporary reviewers of the novel apparently saw this technique as an artistic flaw; in retrospect, it seems well ahead of its time.
Thematically, the novel presents a debate about the benefits and problems of imperialism and colonization, using Costaguano as a model colony and the Gould Concession as model imperialists. When Sotillo accuses foreigners of robbing his country of its wealth, Gould suggests to him that a country's resources (i.e., Costaguana's silver) can be used as an asset only from the cooperation of the native workers and the capital and technical knowledge of the colonists. Such a concept seems relevant to global economic development throughout the twentieth century.

Laid The First Brick of Faith in Sun Signs for Me
By Stephanie
Nice book containing the qualities attributed to people with different sun signs. To be honest I do not believe much in sun signs and have
always believed them to be a gimmick meant to just fool people as I believe that there are lots of factors in this world which affect how a person will turn out to be in life. But I am a saggy and I was surprised to find that most of the characteristics attributed to Sagittarians aptlyst applied to me. So this book has laid the first brick in pushing me to be somewhat convinced that Sun Signs are not that irrational. The book is clearly written and easy to understand for person of any background with no prior knowledge of Astrology. Also there is some info about which Sun Signs are compatible to have a healthy love life together.

Making Disciples Across Cultures: Missional Principles for a Diverse World, by Charles A. Davis

Culture affects how we make disciples. We often unconsciously bring our own cultural assumptions into ministry and mission, not realizing that how we think and operate is not necessarily the best or only way to do things. In today's global environment, disciplemaking requires the cultural humility and flexibility to adapt between different cultural approaches. Charles Davis, former director of TEAM, provides a framework for missional disciplemaking across diverse cultural contexts. He shows how we can recalibrate our ministry efforts, like adjusting sound levels on a mixer board, to accommodate different cultural assumptions. With on-the-ground stories from a lifetime of mission experience, Davis navigates such tensions as knowledge and behavior, individualism and collectivism, and truth and works to help Christian workers minister more effectively. Ministry teams, church planters, pastors and missionaries working interculturally at home or overseas can be part of God's movement of making disciples. Discover how the body of Christ grows in the unity and diversity of the global church.

Review
"In this book, longtime mission leader Charles Davis applies a distinctively missionary analysis to the worn-out ecclesiologies of our time. But it's not all critique and analysis: built on narrative and experience, he lovingly provides the church with a very useful diagnostic tool that gives us viable pathways toward renewal of church life and mission. I am grateful for this book." (Alan Hirsch, founding director of Forge Missional Training Network and author of The Forgotten Ways)

"Discipleship is one of those terms used a lot among Christians but often with little understanding. Ask twenty believers to define it and you'll get twenty different answers. Dr. Charles Davis does the body of Christ a favor by clearly laying out universal principles for growing as disciples and in turn making true disciples. God is calling his body to return to true discipleship and disciple-making, not according to what culture dictates, but what the Bible reveals about moving toward spiritual maturity. Making Disciples Across Cultures is a helpful and provoking resource for every prospective and current message bearer. Overcoming many false assumptions about discipleship, the church and our calling in reaching others, Davis calls us back to Jesus himself and to each other. The book distinctly reminds us of the crucial component of the communal body of Christ in becoming and making true disciples. I highly commend this encouraging book to you." (Ryan Shaw, international lead facilitator, Student Volunteer Movement 2, author, Spiritual Equipping for Mission)

"Too many books are being written to promote the latest fad or method. This is not one of them. In Making Disciples Across Cultures, Charlie Davis makes a practical and compelling case for how to live and lead in the center of biblical tension. This book was written out of the wellspring of experience and is filled with real-life stories that bring the principles to life. I highly commend it to you." (Steve Moore, president, Missio Nexus)

"Drawing on his experience as a sojourner in Pakistan and Venezuela as well as his time with TEAM, Charlie Davis shares ten principles that will help us rebalance our understanding and praxis of being vibrant disciple-making communities with God-sized kingdom agendas. You have asked the questions, felt the frustrations and wondered why the Christian enterprise―as so many of us know it―is not working well. Charlie provides transcultural and universally applicable insights to help recalibrate authentic disciple making in your context. Don’t be surprised if you and your discipleship cohort are inadvertently re-energized as you get a fresh glimpse of the Holy Spirit at work in and through ordinary people like you and me. An essential read for every individual or group committed to genuine disciple making both in the West and around the globe." (Matthew Philip, director of global outreach, Trinity Church, Lansing, MI)

"This refreshing new look at the central mandate of missions―making disciples of the nations―masterfully weaves biblical teaching with stories and anecdotes from a veteran mission leader who is both well traveled and well informed. Over his long career in missions, Charlie has seen it all, and his creative 'slider switches' analogy helps the reader put disciplemaking in balanced perspective." (Marvin Newell, senior vice president, Missio Nexus)

"I know of no one more capable of writing a book on cross-cultural discipleship than Charles Davis. His strong desire for church renewal and his vast global experience uniquely qualify him to write this book. One wonders what the world would look like if a billion people who call themselves Christian would profoundly grow as disciples of Jesus. Not only does Davis share his passion and experience, but he also sets forth practical multicultural principles of discipleship. Leaders in the global church, including the church in the United States, need to read this book." (Jim Plueddemann, former international director of SIM, professor of missions, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School)

"Charles Davis has identified the solution to passive church members, nominal Christians and dying churches. It is a refocus on what our Lord said was priority―making disciples. This is not information from class instruction or mental indoctrination but a process of life transformation through modeling and mentoring that touches practical areas of life and impacts cultures. From a lifetime of overseas service and global leadership, Davis is well-equipped to write Making Disciples Across Cultures. The strong biblical foundation and prolific anecdotes strengthen the book's relevancy for Western churches as well as the mission field." (Jerry Rankin, president emeritus, International Mission Board, SBC)

"If one has a heart for serving God and a passion for His mission, then Making Disciples Across Cultures is certainly a recommended read. I would not hesitate to encourage pastors, theologians, missiologists, and similar scholars to include this book in their respective libraries." (Rev. Wayne A. Grätz, Haddington House Journal, 2016)

Much Needed Cross-Cultural Perspective
By Mathew Sims
Davis sets the goal high:

“What I needed, and what is needed today, is a set of universal disciple-making principles by which to evaluate the cultural and theological assumptions that in turn precipitate the methods and patterns of behavior common in churches and among church leaders” (22)

To do this he has crafted ten principles with sliding cultural values. They are:

Disciples Let God Lead from the Invisible World (Visible vs Invisible)
Disciples Hear and Obey (Knowledge vs Behavior)
Disciples Develop Relational Interdependence (Individualism vs Collectivism)
Disciples Do What Love Requires (Gospel-Truth vs Works-Justice)
Disciples Make Disciples (One-Way Delivery vs Group Interaction)
Leaders Equip Disciples for Ministry (Equippers vs Ministers)
Disciples Live an Undivided Life (Public vs Private)
Disciples Engage in Personal and Public Transformation (Personal vs Cultural)
Disciples Keep the End in Mind (Church vs Kingdom)
Disciples Organize Flexibly and Purposefully (Organizational vs Relational)
These ten principles make up the structure of Making Disciples Across Cultures. Davis has provided the church an invaluable resource birthed out of his own experience with cross-cultural disciple making. He shares his successes and failures and invites us to understand disciple making through different cultural lenses. With all that in mind, Davis succeeds in many ways.

He starts exploring discipleship principles from a solid foundation—some core definitions for understanding the disciple-making mission:

“A disciple is one who moves closer to Jesus as a learner, follower and lover, together with other disciples” (32).

“From the first conversation about Jesus with an unbeliever to the final breath, our task is to make disciples—before salvation, after salvation, and throughout life” (36).

“Following Jesus also has a unique dimension. Jesus himself only did and said what the Father told him to say or do, and he expects his followers to do the same” (39).

One minor note at this point, Davis seems more comfortable with the charismatic gifts than I would be. However, I am aware enough to know that could be partly my own cultural assumptions. I have connections with missionaries in the Middle East, for instance, who tell me that many converts from Islam do so after having a vision of Jesus. I do appreciate how Davis always ties in the use of the charisma to the authority of Scripture (that ties in with the third principle above).

“When we carefully submit what we believe we have heard from God to other trusted members of the body of Christ, judging by the Spirit within us and by Scripture, they can help us discern whether what we have heard is indeed from God or if it is simply a product of our own imagination or, worse, if we have been deceived by the enemy” (49 also see 62 “the truth of God’s word”).

I also appreciated the community focus through out Making Disciples Across Cultures (29, 41 “With few exceptions I found the word [disciple] overwhelmingly used in the plural”; 49, 81, 104, 177, 191, 196, 216).

“God has the capacity to build one body out of millions of diverse individuals. Under his headship, that body has the capacity to accomplish infinitely more than any individual, even though he knows each individual personally, having given each one the gifts that he knows will best contribute to the whole” (81).

Chapter 11 offers a stand out section on the difference between organizational structure and organic growth of the body. The discussion gives fresh eyes to some issues we face in America. We have these old organizational structures (i.e., mainline denominations) but the body has essentially malnutritioned. These decaying organizations can go on for years and decades, but the life is in the body of Christ. I want to offer a pushback for his discussion on gathering informally in homes and small groups.

Discussing this one day with others on this disciple-making journey, one said, “It seems as if these cells and households are the essentials. If you can gather in large groups, such as missional communities and crowd gatherings, it’s a bonus. But if all you have are the latter, you’re probably in trouble. (196)

I would submit that it’s not an either/or. However, the gathering together as one assembly for worship is a Scripture mandate. The writer of Hebrews commands,

23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

I can’t dig into all the background of this passage, but Hebrews deals primarily in terms of the covenant people (i.e., falling away, cultic description, etc). It would be inconceivable in that context for home fellowship to be more important than the gathered cultic worship of the covenant community. I would argue and this passage also gets at this via a different road. As we are called by God to the gathered worship of the body, we are sent out to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds . . . [and encourage] one another.” Therefore, if you miss the gathered, you will have a malnourished scattered fellowship/mission.

Making Disciples Across Cultures ends on a high note and this last selection is worth quoting in its entirety:

During the twentieth century missionaries came to believe that if we gathered homogenous people together, the church would grow faster. Surely bigger churches were better than smaller ones. They reasoned pragmatically that people from one class or caste or ethnicity would not want to become Christian if doing so meant they had to join a church that consisted primarily of the other class, caste or ethnicity. Church growth became an end in itself, and the manifold wisdom of God took back seat.

The homogenous unit principle made some sense as a strategic entry point for evangelism, and in some places of the world, simple isolation or language differences might force one group to be homogenous. But when it becomes characteristic of the global body of Christ, the homogenous unit principle categorically contradicts Scripture. If Paul had believed in this principle, he would have had Jewish congregations and Gentile congregations, and the good news of the manifold wisdom of God would never have become apparent. John’s vision—of men and women from every tribe, language, people and nation gathered together as one kingdom and priests to serve our God—would be false (Rev 5:9-10). (211)

Man that strikes right to the heart of a major issue in the American church. We have turned discipleship into marketing schemes and to do so we’ve rejected the early New Testament example of diverse body of Christ. If you take nothing else away from this review, let that stick to your bones. I would encourage pastors and leaders in churches to slowly work through Making Disciples Across Cultures and have difficult and important conversations about disciple-making in our churches.

A Book that Fills the Gap in Making Disciples Across Cultures
By Dr. Robert J. Vajko
Here is a book that will make a difference in the ministry of making disciple. How I wish that I had an understanding of these principles when began a ministry of church-planting. I would have more clearly emphasized making true disciples as the church was being planted. Planting churches without making disciples will never produce truly biblically healthy churches.

Davis has had years of experience in church-planting and mission leadership as former executive director of TEAM (The Evangelical Alliance Mission). His depth of involvement enriches the ten principles of making disciples cross-culturally as developed in this book. His sharing is both honest and helpful as he explains what he would have done had he understood more clearly these values.

In the introduction the author describes candidly his own life as disciple and disciple maker. He gives a working definition of discipleship, “A disciple is one who moves closer to Jesus as a learner, follower and lover, together with other disciples” (32). He then describes ten principles using the metaphor of a sound mixer board explaining how to balance in any cultural context the process of seeing people becoming true followers of Christ (26).

When I taught cross-cultural ministry in Adelaide College of Ministries in Australia, I sought in vain for a book that described how to make disciples cross-culturally. How helpful it would have been to have this book. Even now I believe that thinking through these principles will make a difference in my own life in training true followers of Jesus.

I cannot recommend too highly both the content and the experience found in this book. Anyone launching into ministry (especially cross-cultural church planters) will find the help needed in this book. What a difference this would make to effective ministry to get the insights given here as well as avoiding some of the traps the author speaks about. Read it and learn from the experiences of others.

The only thing I might add to his working definition given above is that a “disciple is not only one who moves closer to Jesus as a learner, follower and lover, together with other disciples” (34) but that a true disciple also leads others to Christ who then wins others thus continuing the process. This is no doubt understood as a part of discipleship in Davis’s thinking but it is important to make it a definite part of being a disciple lest we forget the multiplication process spoken about by Jesus in what is called the “Great Commission.”

Good Read!
By JP
Quite well written. Helpful in understanding insidious cultural interpretations that influence all of our perceptions, often unknowingly. Helpful discussion of unseen, yet powerful, influences on those perceptions. Lots of suggested resources for additional exploration of topic.

I love this deck so much!! I collect many decks and have well over 50 but this one is seriously my favorite. It is really beautiful and has such an intense energy. I usually see my cards as tool that connect with my intuition but these cards almost seem if they are alive! lol They are so interactive and the messages come through so easily. I have now a new found connection with crystals and their Devas. So much to learn with this deck and will really help you for reading for others or yourself. This deck is absolutely...
By EdieBlount
...BEAU-TI-FUL! The crystals depicted on each card are substantially sized, and are as energetically bright and bold as the real thing. The companion book concisely explains the attributes of each crystal, for easy reference. It is obvious that great effort went into creating this deck. Loved it so much that I purchased a set for my daughter. It has also prompted me to acquire a few crystals that I probably would not of thought of adding to my collection, otherwise.

God indeed does smile
By Beth Avery
This is a very good devotional book because it is written from the heart of someone who knows what it means to suffer. She has been and is going through the crucible of affliction. Through years of fighting the illness of lupus and accompanying illnesses, she has shown remarkable courage and enduring faith. This book is a testimony of her love for God and how He continues to teach her about Himself and His love for her and all His children. I would recommend this book to everyone who needs to be encouraged, especially those who are suffering affliction.

Ms. Dugi's transparency in her writings enables one to see both the challenges and the victories that can arise when one's desire to emulate Deuteronomy 6:5 - "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." - is challenged by the cold, hard realities of living with debilitating illness. This book will be an encouragement to those who neither wish to be stoics nor sink low into despair, but who simply wish to stay in the game of life, growing and moving forward, one step at a time.

This is a great book and a real page turner
By John Jenkins
I don't write a lot of reviews - but this book is amazing! Not only is it one of the best books I have read in the memoir genre of "overcoming ones personal demons" it is one of the best books I have ever read.

I intended to read this book after hearing about it on the radio as just another politician/addiction story but I was completely blown away. I was up until 3am the first night and finished it the next day. The author, Mr. DeRoche tells a very authentic story and puts the reader smack dab in the middle of some very intense and gritty scenes. The family side of the book is heart wrenching, and I won't spoil it here.

On top of the drama and tension on about every page, I found myself laughing at different points in the book and cheering for not only Craig DeRoche - but the work he is doing today as a result of this "peculiarly perfect solution he found." He now works for Prison Fellowship, and reading this reminded me of the first time I read "Born Again" by Chuck Colson who founded the organization.

A book that I learned a lot from for my own spiritual growth
By M. Bienert
This is a wonderful book! It's Mr. DeRoche's personal story of his growth and deliverance from alcohol addiction into a life of honesty to himself, others, and God, and of service to God. If you are skeptical of what I just wrote, and if your impulse is to dismiss it, please give this detailed narrative close scrutiny. There are many beautiful and personal details that will explain to you what it's like when you allow God to transform your life, and how one could connect with the Lord to start this process in the first place. And may you be sweetly blessed!

Although I am already a Christian of many years' journey, Mr. DeRoche's book taught me some things I needed to know in order to practice my faith-walk better. The part that helped me the most was when he explained how he applied the 2nd step of AA to his life. (My own addictions run to things like potato chips and other people's praise, small-time addictions, but the dynamics are basically the same and the book helped me examine myself anyway.) The 2nd step asks us to pray for help in getting out from under our own ego, and to stop trying to control circumstances and thinking of things to do so that things come out a certain way. He explained that there is another way to approach circumstances, which is to just be present honestly and say the truth with love and do your best, and then instead of trying to come up with a "plan B" or keep hacking away at it, just allow what you can do honestly and humbly to be enough, and then pray and leave the rest to the Lord. I can't tell you how often, since I read this book, that stopping my own struggle and listening to others and to God instead has made life much simpler and better. The Lord has His own time and way to work things out, and as Mr. DeRoche says, God's plans are always so much better than mine!

Another quick note--I'm a liberal, grassroots, 'it's gotta work for the lady in the laundromat'-type person, while Mr. DeRoche is a noted and accomplished Republic politician. He didn't gross me out with political sidetalk at all! And now that he's heading Justice Fellowship, I can honestly say that both our oars are in the water and we're both rowing in the same direction. I am so grateful for this book, and for the Lord's work in Mr. DeRoche's life, and His love and deliverance for us all.

Annoyed but glad
By Yogamom
Having lost a son, brother and niece to the disease of addiction I have invested my energies in helping those who suffer the disease and those who love them. When receiving an invitation to read Craig's book I was tired, busy and simply out of sorts. I did not need one more book to read! And yet...sigh...I ordered it.

The one piece of my work and education missing recently is the mess of our criminal justice system. Yet books have been landing in my lap to expand my thinking. Sigh.

As a memoir the author now feels like a colleague though we have never talked. It would be easy to write this off to some form of grandiosity except key issues are laid out well in the narrative of Craig's experiences and others portrayed within the pages of this well written book.

Maybe you or a loved one have to have traveled somewhere near this path to appreciate the important issues within. Or maybe you should just read and then talk to others who will affirm the greater truth that change must happen...Not for Craig or my loved ones but for the greater good of our country.

Cycle of Fear: Syria's Alawites in War and Peace, by Leon Goldsmith

In early 2011 an elderly Alawite shaykh lamented the long history of oppression and aggression against his people. Against such collective memories the Syrian uprising was viewed by many Alawites, and observers, as a revanchist Sunni Muslim movement and the gravest threat yet to the unorthodox Shi'a sub-sect. This explained why the Alawites largely remained loyal to the Ba'athist regime of Bashar al-Asad.

But was Alawite history really a constant tale of oppression and was the Syrian uprising of 2011 really an existential threat to the Alawites? This book surveys Alawite history from the sect's inception in Abbasid Iraq up to the start of the uprising in 2011. The book shows how Alawite identity and political behaviour have been shaped by a cycle of insecurity that has prevented the group from achieving either genuine social integration or long term security. Rather than being the gravest threat yet to the sect, the Syrian uprising, in the context of the Arab Spring, was quite possibly a historic opportunity for the Alawites to finally break free from their cycle of fear.

Review

"Cycle of Fear is based on an impressive amount of field research as well as interviews with hard-to-reach leading Alawite figures inside Syria and elsewhere. Goldsmith does a good job of unmasking much of the mystery surrounding this sect and places within its historical context the twentieth century rise of the Alawites and the decision by most Alawites in the current conflict to stick with the Assad regime. I highly recommend it." -- David W. Lesch, Ewing Halsell Distinguished Professor of Middle East History at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and author of Syria: The Fall of the House of Assad

"Leon Goldsmith makes a timely argument about the Alawite community that has provided the main pillar of support for Assad's rule in Syria. He explains how the minority complex of this small but powerful sect has been shaped by centuries of persecution. Their internal solidarity and fear of the Sunni majority, Goldsmith argues, has convinced them that their present struggle is a matter of life and death. This brief and engaging interpretive essay helps us to understand the cycle of fear that grips all religious communities in Syria today and makes the civil war so intractable." -- Joshua Landis, Director, Center for Middle East Studies, University of Oklahoma, and author of SyriaComment.com

"This valuable study usefully combines Ibn Khaldun's theory of cycles of rule, dependent on the changing assabiyeh of the ruling group, with the impact of the security dilemma to explain the causes and consequences of the Alawite community's association with the Assad regime. It benefits from the author's exceptional access to the Alawite heartland to provide a convincing and sympathetic portrait of this community." -- Raymond Hinnebusch, Professor of International Relations and Director of the Centre for Syrian Studies, University of St. Andrews

"A splendid, multi-faceted, and scrupulously fair survey of the Alawite community of Syria -- easily the best available in English. Based on courageous, thoroughly professional field work immediately before and amid the outbreak of the street uprising against Bashar al-Assad, Cycle of Fear not only provides an excellent historical background, but also gives a wonderful portrayal of the Alawites at a critical turning point in their modern affairs. The present Syrian crisis cannot be comprehended without understanding the Alawites, who are at once the lifeblood and the prisoners of the Assad regime, which has increasingly taken them for granted." -- William Harris, Professor in the Department of Politics, University of Otago and author of Lebanon: A History, 600-2011

Helps a Westerner Understand Sectarianism
By CP
Back in 2013, I had a memorable conversation with a Middle Eastern compadre about the Syrian Civil War. As a Westerner, I was especially baffled by the adoption of sectarian-based terrorism by some rebel groups that targeted Syrian religious minorities. I’ve always wondered, why would anyone turn away potential allies based on religious or sectarian differences or intentionally foment sectarian hatred that gives the Assad regime an opportunity to divide-and-conquer? My friend’s answers was candor, “they [certain rebels groups] are trying to turn the war into a sectarian one so they could rally the Sunnis to their side.” I did not quite understand it back then, and still have trouble today in grasping this concept since my Western mindset would rather opt for a united front of all religious groups when facing an opponent as powerful and intransigent as Assad. Lessons from that conversation continue to serve as a reminder of the difference in thought process between Westerners and Middle Easterners. Fast-forward to 2015, Syria is sinking deeper and deeper into the swamp of perpetual war, while the sectarian fault lines are more visible than ever, which makes the question of “why sectarianism instead of united front” more evident than ever.

This is not a book that solely focuses on the Alawite faith; we have books like The Nusayri-Alawi Religion: An Enquiry into Its Theology and Liturgy by Bar-Asher and Kofsky for that purpose. Instead, Goldsmith succeeds in presenting a quality documentation of the Alawite’s history that constitutes the main portion of the book. The long history of persecution endured by the Alawites since the 9th century at the hands of their Sunni overlords simply because of deviance from state-sanctioned orthodox Islam is a harrowing tale that made one understand why despite dissatisfaction with the Assad government the Alawites continue to firmly support the regime. The gut-wrenching images propagated by ISIS and other fundamentalist Sunni groups celebrating beheadings, enslavement and mass murder based on sectarian identities must have reminded the Alawites of centuries of suffering at the hands of the Abbasids, Mamluks, Seljuks and Ottomans where entire communities of Alawites were slaughtered, beheaded, and their women carried away as slaves. The surprise of Goldsmith’s book came when it was revealed that dissent aimed at the Assad family is quite prevalent among Alawites of the western Syrian mountains where the Assad clan hails from. But with the ongoing Civil War and the possibility of a return to the status of an underclass, or worse, genocide, forced the Alawites to rally in defense of Assad, a man who is the last line of defense against Sunni extremists that have made clear that gory episodes of history will be repeated once the Alawites allow themselves to be vanquished.

Although the chronicle of Alawite history is impressive, Goldsmith’s conclusion, where he believes ethnic and religious integration under a pluralist democratic framework is the future path for the Alawites of Syria is perhaps a far stretch given the present situation in the country, i.e. the “Afghanistanization” of Syria. Ironically, in Islamic theology, the land governed by “infidels” is labeled as dar-al-harb or “abode of war,” while Muslim states are referred to as dar-al-Islam or “abode of peace.” But in reality this is almost the exact opposite. One take-away from this book is that wars over religious and sectarian identity are an inseparable part of Islamic history, and conflicts of similar nature will likely continue into the future. Nevertheless, for anyone who might be interested in the story of the Alawites as well as sectarianism and politics in the Middle East, this is a fine book to peruse over.

Excellent book for anyone who's interested in minorities or Syria
By MENA analyst
Excellent book that focuses of the geo-political history of the Alawite community in Syria (as opposed to the elements of the faith, which received more attention in past scholarship). The book clearly shows how sectarianism was instrumentalized by the Assad regime (father and son) to remain in power. The chapter that covers the economic hardship of the Alawite community prior to the popular uprising in Syria in 2011 is crucial - it clearly demonstrates how the drought, neo-liberalism and corruption negatively affected this community, and yet the community chose not to join the uprising due to its fears, which were amplified and utilized by the Assad regime to remain in power.
This book allows readers to view the Alawite community as victims of the regime, to an extent, and not just as a sect implicated in systematic mass murder. I hope many Syrians read it.

I think the book would have benefited from a deeper examination of group psychology of minorities or of communities in conflict. Also, some of the points made in the book about the inner machinations of the Assad regimes prior to 2011 aren't backed by solid proof. This is understandable considering the secrecy that characterizes the Baath dictatorship, but I think the book would have benefited if those sections were simply not included.
