Someone to Watch Over Me, ISBN: 9781512235739, Published by Liot Literary an e-book by Fran Connor is "An epic story of love and struggle".
The story follows Alicia Maria Gonzales Carter as she encounters one distressing situation after another as she is caught up in Spain's disastrous civil war of the 1930's followed by equally gut-wrenching activity and conditions in many of the same environs during World War II. Her father is an Englishman, married to a Spanish woman and a successful maker/marketer of Jerez wines in Spain. Alicia finishes University in Madrid, wins a dance competition that reveals considerable anatomy, is forced to kill Jose, an acquaintance, to keep from being raped, hides the body and returns home. Unfortunately, Jose was the son of her home town Police Chief a vicious, vindictive, man who wants her father's and others' lucrative businesses. She is confused with respect to what action she should take, confesses to a new Priest who is unsympathetic and makes the impossible suggestion she go to the police. Further trouble builds when the Priest is found to have dark secretes and she again acts precipitously forcing her to leave to join a touring pianist who she discovers is the love of her life. From this point the story burgeons into an epic tale of one calamitous situation following another as Alicia endures all manner of hardship travelling through the Pyrenees, to France, eventually England and back to Spain as a spy for England encountering a few helpful souls amid hosts of others performing acts of murder, duplicity, deceit and betrayal until a final interesting conclusion.
Discussion: Previously, I have read only one title by this author - a light romance that was pleasant. Consequently, after a somewhat innocuous beginning I discovered this story to be a surprisingly engaging tale of the Spanish revolution with its convoluted fascist/loyalist/communist/democratic struggles of the 1930 - 40 period and of WW II. Granted, inclusion of all of the harrowing situations and experiences in one person's life is a heavy burden. However, knowledge of the many stories generated by this period, make its credibility marginally acceptable if one will be less pragmatic in acceptance. The conclusion is a mitigating and somewhat unexpected plus.

Someone to Watch Over Me by Fran Connor takes the reader back in time to Madrid in June of 1936. Alicia Carter is preparing to head home after completing her degree. She has grand plans of using her degree to work with farmers to improve irrigation and solve other water problems. But, before she leaves she desires the trophy for the Lindy Hop competition. She and her partner win, but her wonderful last night in Madrid is ruined when Jose forces himself upon her. Defending herself with the pistol her father gave her, Alicia kills Jose and dumps his body in a lake. Distraught by the constant thoughts of what she has done and the tightening grasp of Jose’s father, a corrupt police chief, Alicia looks for salvation anywhere she can. While working for her father, she happens to find her savior in the form of a dreamy piano player: the same piano player who played during the Lindy Hop competition. As she falls in love with the pianist, war comes to Spain. Hiding away in the Sierra Nevada with her new lover, Alicia hopes both the police chief and the war will forget about them. But, not all hopes are meant to come to fruition.
Fran Connor has pieced together a well written work of historical fiction. While I cannot attest to how well Connor has used history in her writing, I can say that the story is very nicely put together. The characters interact in interesting ways and the reader can get a true feel for the setting and the plot. At times, Alicia seems a bit unbelievable, such as her constant thoughts of romantic intimacy when she has just committed a murder. However, this is a mild distraction in an otherwise well written book.

This book will make you have a very good time

Someone to watch over me by Fran Connor is a love story that takes place just before the Civil War in Spain that my parents live as kids, so that was one of the reasons I bought this book. I found out that is a very well written book that made me laugh plenty of times even when the character is always in trouble, due to the circumstances. The story almost starts with a women singer singing “someone to watch over me", and the main protagonists thinking: "... that sounds like being in jail, I want to be free…” and then all the plot starts very quick with her murdering the son of the chief of the police, and all the struggle and events that happened related to it, how she can survive and be happy by being in love but at the same time with a life full of troubles. I like very much the way that is written, it keeps you interested from the beginning to the end and the humor of the author, even in very difficult times really makes the book a great entertainment time. I do recommend this book to everybody, it has action, romance, mystery, and everything you want in a book.

A zany comical novel but heavy with British humor.

Snatched is a comedy-mystery by British author Bill James. This novel centers on George Lepage who has recently been appointed as the Director of the Hulliborn Museum, succeeding the highly respected Sir Eric Butler-Minton. George has designs on a knighthood for himself, but problems arise. Four famous paintings are stolen and a former employee, Neville Falldew, is bent on causing trouble. In addition a Japanese team is negotiating with Lepage to bring an exhibit to the museum. Various museum employees get in on the action as Lepage struggles to make sense of the situation. The figure of the late Sir Eric hovers over the action. The story meanders through various comical situations to its end.

People who are fond of British humor will enjoy the zany antics that occur in this novel. As an American I found it to be mostly silly.

bizarre little art crime novel

Bill Jams occasionally offers glimpse of the type of twisted humor that has made the Harpur and Illes mysteries so great. While this is a lesser effort, I found it funny and interesting. Good for Bill a James fans as we hope for more appearances of his great detective characters.

I enjoyed it a great deal

If you wanted to know just a little something about what happened in Salem, this probably isn't your book. If instead you are looking for a thorough understanding, then you won't find a more complete accounting than this! Clearly written and obviously well-researched, I enjoyed it a great deal.

A compelling tale of Puritan hysteria

For anyone interested in this fascinating subject, this is a must read. The book is meticuously researched, and the story of the witch trials is told in intricate and lively detail. You come away with a vivid sense of the hysteria that convulsed Salem in the spring and summer of 1692.

About the Author
Erich Neumann (1905-60), a psychologist and philosopher, was born in Berlin and lived in Tel Aviv from 1934 until his death. A JUNGIAN PRESENTS THE ARCHETYPE OF THE ‘DIVINE FEMININE’

Erich Neumann (1905-1960), was a Jungian psychologist, philosopher, and author; he also wrote books such as The Origins and History of Consciousness, The Fear of the Feminine, Depth Psychology and a New Ethic, Amor and Psyche, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 379-page plus 185 B&W plates paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Preface to this 1955 book, “In this book we have attempted a structural analysis of an archetype; we have striven to show its inner growth and dynamic, and its manifestation in the myths and symbols of mankind. Such an understanding is one of the central needs of analytical psychology. For, in both a theoretical and a practical sense, it is very hard for those who have not experienced the reality of the archetype by undergoing analysis to understand what depth psychology means by an archetype… Our exposition does not deal with the archetype in general, but with a specific archetype, namely, that of the Feminine or… the Great Mother… The investigation of the special character of the feminine psyche is one of the most necessary and important tasks of depth psychology in its preoccupation with the creative health and development of the individual… The experience of the archetypal world leads to an inner form of humanization that… will perhaps one day prove more reliable than the form of humanism known to us up to now, which is not grounded in depth psychology.”

He notes that the Great Mother “was worshipped and portrayed many thousands of years before the appearance of the term.” (Pg. 11) He points out that “the elementary character of the Archetypal Feminine is far from containing only positive features… the Archetypal Feminine is not only a giver and protector of life but… she is the goddess of life and death at once.” (Pg. 45)

He clarifies, “The archetypal image of the Great Mother lives in the individual as in the group, in the man as well as the woman. When therefore we say that the matriarchal world precedes the patriarchal world, we are not referring to a sequence of sociological structures, such as that set up by Bachofen [Mother Right].” (Pg. 91)

He states, “The Great Mother fills the universe and the earth with fertility and abundance, and tends to be characterized by a naturalistic, ‘sensuous’ form, while her aspect as ruler over the spirits and the dead favors forms stressing the unnatural, unreal, and ‘spiritual.’” (Pg. 108) Later, he adds, “Body-vessel and mother-child situation---the positive elementary character of the Feminine---spring from the most intimate personal experience, from an experience that is eternally human; and even when it is projected into the ends of heaven and earth, it preserves its closeness to the central personal phenomenon of feminine life.” (Pg. 147) But has also adds, “Blood sacrifice and dismemberment belong to the fertility ritual of the Great Mother. Both fecundate the womb of the earth…” (Pg. 189)

He observes, “It was [Robert] Briffault [Marriage-Past and Present, The Mothers] who discovered the fact (which is still insufficiently recognized) that early culture is in very high degree the product of the female group, and that the relative sedentariness of the matriarchal community of mothers and children was bound to provide a biological, psychological, and sociological force for the ‘ennoblement’ of the original natural state.” (Pg. 281)
He asserts, “The goddess is therefore not only the queen of the ennobled fruit of the soil but also of the spirit matter of transformation that is embodied in the wine. Thus the transformative character of the Feminine rises from the natural to the spiritual plane. The culture-bringing primordial mysteries culminate in a spiritual reality that completes the mystery character of the Feminine.” (Pg. 287)

He concludes, “The Archetypal Feminine in man unfolds like mankind itself. At the beginning stands the primeval goddess, knowing nothing but the secret of her womb; at the end is Tara, in her left hand the opening lotus blossom of psychic flowering, her right hand held out toward the world in a gesture of giving.” (Pg. 334) He continues, “The Great Goddess… the archetypal unity and multiplicity of the feminine nature---is the incarnation of the Feminine Self that unfolds in the history of mankind as in the history of every individual woman; its reality determines the individual as well as collective life. This archetypal psychical world which is encompassed in the multiple forms of the Great Goddess is the underlying power that even today… determine the psychic history of modern man and of modern woman.” (Pg. 336)

Coaching as a "force multiplier" in ministry

I had the great fortune to attend Keith's 5 day Coaching Mastery course in Singapore this year, and it was a game-changer for me. I recommend this book to anyone in ministry who is looking for greater effectiveness in their work, a 'lighter load', and less stress and frustration in their ministry.

This book is unique in several ways:

1. It describes how a coaching approach is a massive "force multiplier" in ministry: when I was a nuclear submarine officer in the US Navy, we looked for force multipliers that could increase the effectiveness of our boat as a warfighting machine: tactics and strategies that would allow a nuclear submarine to do its mission with greater power and effect, without simply increasing the number of weapons or men on the boat. I have found that the coaching approach described in this book: other-centered and non-directive, is a massive force multiplier in my own ministry as a cross-cultural missionary in Africa. My own effectiveness in my work and my personal sense of carrying the 'light and easy yoke of Jesus' has deepened profoundly.
2. It is written by a practitioner: Keith has the 'street cred' of a cross-cultural Christian worker and ministry leader, having served overseas for years in ministry. He's not writing, as many do, from a position of small experience and much theory/opinion, he writes from a position of much experience and an appropriate amount of theory.
3. It is evidence-based: A coaching approach provides greater effectiveness in ministry and greater results than other more directive, 'telling' approaches in leadership. The evidence shows this, and Keith's rigorous approach to research and conclusions greatly deepens this book.

Clear Introduction and Call to Coaching in Ministry

There is no question that the ministry landscape is undergoing significant change. If you went to seminary more than 10 years ago the nuts-and-bolts ministry training you received is becoming less relevant and less effective with each passing year. People's engagement with the local church in terms of attendance, serving, and giving no longer resembles the "twice on Sunday and once on Wednesday," tithing-multiple-committee-member model from just a decade or two ago. Churches seem to be universally challenged with how to guide people toward greater ministry engagement. For many of those churches they need look no further than how they equip and empower their volunteers and ministry leaders toward meaningful ministry. In Coaching In Ministry, coaching pioneer Keith Webb charts a course that will help ministry leaders navigate this changing landscape.

Keith begins this short book with a concise working definition of coaching:

"an ongoing intentional conversation that empowers a person or group to fully live out God's calling." (p. 21)

He further explains:

"Coaching focuses on people's learning rather than us teaching. Coachees (those who are coached) are in the driver's seat. They choose their own goals, reflect deeply on their current situation, think through their options, and decide their next steps. Later Keith describes coaching as,

"a non-directive conversation in which the coach asks a person questions to prompt reflection into what God is saying to that person. The coaching process empowers that person to develop custom solutions for his or her problems or goals." (p. 37)

One of the primary strengths of Coaching In Ministry is that it can serve as an introduction and call-to-action for the importance of coaching in ministry. I will order several copies to share with my staff colleagues and board members. I will also use this book when inviting ministry leaders to consider my coaching services. If you are unfamiliar with coaching (or think you already know what coaching is) reading Coaching in Ministry will bring further clarity to the immense value of coaching.

Unfortunately, many leaders still operate under the disingenuous definition of management as 'the art of getting people to do what you want them to do while thinking it was their idea!' Many of those same leaders leaders think that coaching is 'asking questions until you get the coachee to give you the answer you want!' The lack of authenticity in both of these approaches destroys any potential for long-lasting growth and effective leadership development.

It is so much more fulfilling to hear a coachee formulate a solution to a challenge they are facing that they thought of themselves rather than reluctantly agreeing to try the solution you gave them! Coaching has enabled me to equip more people for effective ministry than any training program, class, or leadership development program I have ever used. Keith clearly and concisely establishes a solid foundation for biblical coaching that honors God, equips and empowers the coachee, and strengthens the church.

Finally, Coaching In Ministry will introduce you to: The Question That Moves People to Action. Keith claims this one question will,

"help get people into action that is non-threatening and open enough to work in just about any situation." (p.78)

But you will have to read the book yourself to find out what that question is. I think it's well worth the modest price of the book!

I am quite the fan of Tony Evans! I heard him preach on the radio and God's Word was so moving! I highly recommend this book! I forgive because God's forgiven me! There are days I struggle when a past situation comes back into memory and I can get angry or bitter. This book helps with that! Whatever spectrum on forgiveness that you're on. Whether it's really hard for you or you struggle only sometimes. Short read. Powerful read. Clarity. Great perspectives that you need to hear! It will really help!
