Powerful, insightful and moving.

Fabulous read. You'll be fascinated by accounts such as that of Amish young people dating (incredible!) and the emotional starvation children are subjected to under the guise of avoiding encouraging "pride" in them. Kudos to all former Amish who have had the courage to leave, and kudos to Brenda Nixon for being one of those who have reached out to former Amish in loving support. Unusual and powerful.

Uncovering the truth of the Amish communities

Unlike the homespun fictional tales that romanticize Amish life, Brenda Nixon shares the real story(ies) behind the myths. In her excellent book, Nixon tells seven different individual's experiences as they sought the courage to escape their Amish community. Readers will be riveted and honestly appalled at some of the information that Nixon describes. If you've always thought Amish = Buggies and Bonnets...then don't miss this informational and compelling read.

In Beyond Buggies and Bonnets: Seven True Stories of Former Amish (2015), author Brenda Nixon presents an inside look at the life and faith of the Amish who belong to the strict Swartzentruber Order in Ohio. As a conservative subgroup of Old Order Amish Society, coming into existence around 1913 over the concept of shunning those outside the Amish faith, the Swartzentrubers prohibit the use of technology and tightly regulate dress, worship, and education of its members. It is this strict adherence to rules and regulations which inspires some young people to leave the culture in which they have been raised and seek the “English world” that offers more freedom of choice. These are the people we meet in Nixon’s book, as she welcomes them into her home, her church, and her life and serves as both mentor and “English Mom.” According to Donald Kraybill (The Riddle of the Amish Culture, 2001), the Amish continue as an example of a thriving Anabaptist group, but rules differ from Order to Order. Most “outsiders” are familiar with the Amish tradition of “Rumspringa’, a time when Amish youth are encouraged to explore the outside English world before being baptized into the Amish way of life. But the Swartzentruber sect does not practice the custom, which—in the words of former Mennonite Joseph Miller—precludes choosing a religion based upon conviction. If you have ever wondered about the “plain and simplistic life” of the Amish, this book should be on your “must read” short list. Not only will you gain insight into the ways of the Swartzentruber sect, but you will also be reminded of the freedom of worship we of the “English world” often take for granted.
