If you're looking for direction, this is it.

I started reading this and was hooked in minutes, what a fantastic account of her life story and how she survived her controlling Mother. She clearly knows her guides intimately and is able to tell her story in a clear and insightful manor. I would recommend this book to anyone who has any questions about who & what their goals are in life. This is one fantastic read!!!!

RAHIMEH ANDALIBIAN was born in Tehran and moved with her family to California in 1979, at the onset of the Iranian revolution. A family riven by the Iranian Revolution

Rahimeh Andalibian tells the dramatic story of the implosion of her once secure and happy Iranian family following the 1979 Islamic revolution. The owner of a hotel in the city of Mashhad that caters to Muslim pilgrims, Rahimeh's father, her beloved Baba, becomes involved in an event that ultimately traps the family in the brutal regime of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and exacts an unimaginable price.

Rahimeh is just 5-years-old when the story begins, one of five children of Baba and Maman. She lives an idyllic life, pampered and protected by her loving parents. "The borders of my life were defined by two buildings -- home and hotel - edged by trim topiary hedges," she writes. "How often I skipped for joy along that driveway from one pleasure dome to another."

As the narrator, Ms. Andalibian doesn't let the reader know more than she knows at any given age. Growing older, she lets us in on more of her story and her understanding of it. In the aftermath of the revolution, the family escapes first to London and then to Los Angeles, where they must begin again in poverty. The family is resilient and finds its place in the Iranian community, her father starting a business that leads pilgrimages to Mecca. But the events of their last days in Iran -- and the secrets left buried -- affect each family member in different and destructive ways -- depression, resentment, drug abuse and alcoholism, broken marriages, failed businesses and bankruptcies, outbursts of rage and violence. "Because we did not mourn our losses or talk openly about what had happened, the festering wound -- the secret -- got buried deep within our family, like a land mine," she writes. "It was only a matter of time before it would explode."

It was particularly interesting to me to read of the Iranian Revolution from the point of view of an observant Muslim family who were just as horrified as the global community by the corrupt new government that abused its power in the name of religion. Here in America, the news was all about the fifty-two U.S. embassy workers held hostage in Tehran for 444 days. We didn't hear much of the suffering of the Iranian people themselves. My lasting memory of the time is the day we went into New York for the ticker tape parade honoring the returning hostages.

Ms. Andalibian's tale is a riveting one, marred for me only by the relentless foreshadowing with which she ends almost every chapter in the book. ("Just when we believed life could not get any worse, it did"; "Maman's predictions were to be proven terribly correct"; "The next crisis took an unexpected form, shapely and blonde.") And some events she retells seem incongruous; for example, she writes of her father having to employ torturers to extract stolen family money from an extortionist, yet her mother apparently collects a debt owed the family simply by asking. But these are small points, and nothing that detracts from the power of Ms. Andalibian's story.

A deeply-touching tale and a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit

Once in a while you come across a story that permeates your being as with every emotion and every word exchanged you go on a personal journey with the characters and find yourself transported thousands of miles. This is one of these books from the moment you read the first page till you get to the final paragraph, eyes gritty from the lack of sleep, voice raspy from not having talked for so long. Though this may at first glance seem like another tale of an immigrant family's struggle, it stands out as the author's indepth perception of human nature and the interplay of family drama is one that most of us can relate to. This is a book that made me laugh and made me cry, but at the end it also made me take a closer look at my own family dynamics and ask myself how can I be a better sister/daughter/aunt? If you are trying to decide what book is next on your reading list, look no further, this is it.

She takes the reader on an emotional page turning journey candidly sharing an unthinkable family tragedy, and, the impact of such tragedy on her entire family. This is a story of true courage and hope in the midst of upheaval. Ms. Andalibian gives the reader such deep insight into the human condition that every reader will walk away with a greater understanding of their own family dynamics and the hope and strength we all possess.

Today we all live in a world where many are free to express their thoughts about good, and evil, as if it were a game invented by a man over time. In this interesting apologetic work, Dr. Philip makes it totally clear that we as humans have a limited capacity to discern truth when we do not follow the instructions of our masterful creator: God. The fact that there are some who believe that once we abolish criminal laws we become free to live morally upright, and lives filled with integrity. But, nothing can be further away from the truth. In order to change the world we live in, we must first be changed. Our hearts, must be changed. And, the only power that can truly change us is the love of God. Efforts to suppress truth comes on every level of life today. The scriptures says, "And this is the condemnation that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil." (John 3:19) We are living in such times when men call 'wrong', 'right'; and, the call 'right','wrong!' They are quick to provide quick fixes to the masses of people, because they believe that people are looking for quick fixes. But the objective is that not everyone is seeking quick fixes or being silent. Righteousness is a spiritual imperative, and an essential hope each man can receive through faith in the Bible. We must speak out loud, as Dr. Martin Luther King, once said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent on the things that matter." Truth marches on!

An applied theology using reasonable advice that has produced results for centuries by Christians immemorial. These authors do not offer theory but have shown in practice by their lives amongst unreached people groups what true love and patience can accomplish.

Collection of articles on a wide range of topics

40 by 40 is a collection of articles that were originally published in Biblical Archaeology Review. These articles were organized by time period, starting with the Exodus and ending after Acts. There were 43 main articles with numerous sub-articles. They contained many full-color photographs, diagrams, and maps of the places studied and things found.

For those not familiar with the magazine, it's written so the average person can follow what's being discussed without watering down the actual technical content. Enough information is provided that readers can follow the debates about a layer or object (dating, what it is, etc.) and form their own opinions. The general attitude of the contributors is that the Bible is not a historical book but contains historical memories. But you can believe the Bible is historically accurate (like I do) and still enjoy these articles.

Some articles focused on controversial issues while others described interesting finds or gave insights into a trade. There were articles about the meaning of the word translated "Red" in "Red Sea," the Hazor excavation, tombs of certain periods and lack of tombs in certain periods, an altar on Mount Ebal, an Edomite shrine, the Sea People, iron working, bronze working, fish and fishing techniques of the lake of Galilee, crucifixion, excavations in Jerusalem (a large public building, the Pool of Siloam, a gate under the Golden Gate, tombs, the Burnt House, etc.), and more.

Overall, I'd recommend this book to those who have enjoyed BAR articles in the past or who are interested in a high level of archaeological detail.

What we have here is an outstanding collection of articles from Biblical Archaeology Review. The material is exhaustive but remains very approachable for lay readers. These works are organized chronologically by the books of the Bible from Genesis onward. I have to say that the total depth and scope of the material covered is breathtaking and I was not quite prepared for that. The decades of archaeological work documented in these two volumes adds rich context to a Bible study or any study of the Biblical era. If you are serious about learning more about Bible times this publication is for you.

A much needed book destigmatizing infertility, pregnancy and infant loss

This book is a brave look at infertility, peri and postnatal loss as told from variety of perspectives. I like that it has male as well as female voices in the narratives. It is a good mix of clergy and lay individuals who wrestle with loss and the profound effects those losses have on faith. The more we share stories like these, the more we can help the grieving process. Useful for professionals, practitioners as well as for the friends and family of the bereaved.

About the Author
Liel Leibovitz is a visiting assistant professor at NYU Steinhardt focusing primarily on video game and interactive media research and theory. Having received his PhD from Columbia University in 2007, Leibovitz continues to study the ontology of electronic game play, exploring such diverse issues as human-machine interaction, gaming and the construction of player subjectivity, and representations of death and violence in video games. He is a member of the advisory board of the New York chapter of the Digital Games Research Association, a founding member of the NYU Faculty Council on Games, and a member of the academic advisory board of the American Jewish Historical Society. He is also the author or co-author of several books, including, most recently, The Chosen Peoples: America, Israel, and the Ordeals of Divine Election, co-written with Todd Gitlin, as well as contributor to newspapers and magazines such as the Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic, Dissent, and Tablet.

Great research into the moral and spiritual value of video games

Excellent work. It clearly shows the moral dimension of video games and the value of game play in our spiritual lives. Extensively researched but very readable. Dr. Leibovitz explodes the conventional media narrative of games as immoral. I think a few heads are going to explode, too.

Gaming and God

To enter the matrix of video games is to enter an Augustinian world? So concludes Liel Leibovitz, senior writer for "Tablet Magazine" and visiting assistant professor focusing primarily on video game and interactive media research and theory at NYU-Steinhardt, in his recent work "God in the Machine: Video Games as Spiritual Pursuit." This short, 144 page hardback will intrigue gamers and religious alike. Though written more on an academic level, well educated readers will be able to fathom much or most of the author's material.

This book unfolds in four chapters where Leibovitz seeks to make the case that gaming, unlike television, literature or warfare, is more attuned to religion. Not that it is an alternative to religion, but that gaming "is a practice in rituals, ethics, morality, and metaphysics" (x). Similarly, religion is modular, rule-based, moved my metaphysical designs that are governed by earthly designs (xi). To make his case, Leibovitz draws in Descarte, Hume, Kant, Kierkegaard, Rabbi Akiva, Maimonides, Augustine, Plato, Aristotle, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and a host of other communications theorists and philosophers. The author's reason for bringing in such a vast regiment of thinkers is "not to delve deeply into abstract philosophical issues but rather to appropriate their theoretical frameworks and, in some cases, language, to address the distinct realities of video games" (115).

For my part there were two issues that made the book a bit stiff. Firstly, the second chapter was all based on the author's gaming experience, described in great detail over 39 pages. It was quite a tedious section to labor through. The second has more to do with the connections the author makes between gaming and some aspects of religion. Sometimes the logical connection Leibovitz perceives is not so clear. I found myself scratching my head on occasion, unable to see what the author saw.

On the other hand, I was delighted by some observations. For example, toward the end of the book the author brings into the discussion the old debate between Pelagius and Augustine. Leibovitz surprised me by seeing that Pelagius's "enlightened doctrine" was actually "far more rigid than it sounds; it places upon people an onus no individual could bear" (124). Whereas Augustine offered "a much more humane approach ( . . . ); while life under the shadow of the original sin might appear unjust, divine grace emerges to kindle the torch that illuminates the path to redemption" (125). This brings the author to shockingly conclude, "Video games, then, should be seen as an Augustinian simulator, a rule-based environment into which one enters, abandoning the pursuit of reason and receiving instead a chance to transcend the irresovable anxieties of modern media" (126).

"God in the Machine" shows depth as well as breadth. It would be a fitting addition to a book discussion group or theological reading circle. Whether you come to the same conclusions as the author or not, "God in the Machine" will change the way you see gaming here on out. I recommend the book.

A solid book that treats the medium with academic respect and explores some insanely interesting ideas.

I immensely enjoyed this book from cover to cover. It is the first book about video games I've read where I had to stop and think for a decent chunk of time before moving on. I spent about an hour trying to dig into about five pages of content, writing stuff down to figure out all the amazing ideas that had been packed in. It moves between explanation, exploring games, and exploring the structures/impacts of religion beautifully. I disagreed with Leibovitz's points often, but that did not at all impede my enjoyment of this book.

This book asks a lot from the reader. You have to be willing to seriously engage video games on an intellectual level, and that can be tough sometimes, but this book seriously pulls it off.
