About the Author
Maggie La Tourelle has worked in the field of holistic healthcare for 30 years as a practitioner, teacher and writer integrating psychotherapy, NLP, kinesiology and healing. She has written and contributed to a number of books and articles and has lectured at some of the UK's leading universities. Her book Principles of Kinesiology continues to be a worldwide classic. Maggie remains close to her Scottish roots and, having originally trained as an art teacher, enjoys art and design work.

Scottish author Maggie La Tourelle is now based in London as a writer, therapist and teacher. She has worked in the field of holistic healthcare for thirty years integrating psychotherapy, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), kinesiology, and healing. At a personal level she has ten years hands-on experience helping to care for both her parents at the end of their lives. Her book PRINCIPLES OF KINESIOLOGY is a global classic an now THE GIFT OF ALZHEIMER'S promises to rise to the same level of importance.
Though the only way to truly understand the process or journey Maggie discovered in living with her mother with Alzheimer's is to read this book slowly and with considerable time for reflection, there are aspects that should be brought to the attention of potential readers. Maggie outlines the Seven Stages of Alzheimer's very well indeed: Stage 1: Normal, Stage 2: Normal aged forgetfulness, Stage 3: Mild cognitive impairment, Stage 4: Mild Alzheimer's disease, Stage 5: Moderate Alzheimer's disease, Stage 6: Moderately severe Alzheimer's disease, and Stage 7: Severe Alzheimer's disease - and each of these stages she details the subtle to obvious forms of degeneration of cognizance, neurological impairment, loss of muscle control, speech, and increasing rigidity. This chapter alone makes this book an important one for everyone's library.
But the beauty of the book is Maggie's and her mother's discovery that Alzheimer's disease may just be a bridge to the other world. "When her physical and mental faculties atrophied due to Alzheimer's, she started to experience intermittent altered states of consciousness in which her inner senses awakened. This open a channel to the Other World in which she had many extraordinary experiences. She frequently left her body and returned, she had contact with deceased relatives, she received instructions about the dying process and she previewed her own death and her life after death. These phenomena could so easily have been dismissed out of hand as delusional perceptions or hallucinations as experienced in mental illness. During this time she also developed the gifts of extrasensory perception: telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, mediumship and channeling, which she demonstrated quite naturally and unselfconsciously. She described seeing pictures and hearing sounds through her inner `television' - her portal to the Other World....The last few year of hr life were, without doubt, very positive and this was the direct result of her having Alzheimer's. The disease enabled her to give and receive love as she had not done before and to have wonderful Other World experiences that prepared her for a good death and for her next journey.'

Thank you Maggie so much. You came to me just when I needed you. I was so down, and the information out there is so clynical and confusing. I was looking for something that would help me to understand how to make sense of the strange and sometimes hurtful language of Alzheimers. This book "came to me" at exactly the right time. My Mother moved in with me in March, and oh my goodness it's been hard for both of us to settle to the change. Early days I know, but just when I thought it was all a terrible mistake I found The Gift of Alzheimers and this book was exactly what we both needed. Maggie has taught me to really listen and not just "listen". And by doing that I've learnt so much about my mother,myself,our past,present and our futures.
Maggie has opened my heart,my mind and my inner psyche. Although Mum has no idea that I've read the book, I'm sure she can see a difference in me. She's settling much better, and we "communite" much better since Maggie has unlocked me. Now, together we are allowing time to pass in each others company in a calm,fun,deeply enlightening and nurturing way. I understand now that in her own way Mum is teaching me the lessons I will need for when it's my turn, and at the same time I'm privlidged to watch her as the layers unfold. Without Maggie helping to unlock my mind I don't think I would have been able to see what was right in front of me all the time. Thank you for sharing your life with us Maggie, you are an amazing woman and a real Mother to everyone who needs your help. I can't praise this book highly enough, the journey is just starting, I don't know when it will end, but I'm not frightened and together we'll dance all the way.

Breaking the taboo around death and dying

This book continues relatively new, but wonderful tradition of breaking the taboo around the issue of death. Personally, I have greatly benefited from the work of authors such as Raymond Moody or Elisabeth Kuebler-Ross, who began to openly discuss near-death experiences and the psychological phases of dying. Ms La Tourelle's book gives the topic an even broader view: she discusses how an illness effecting brain and memory can actually open up bridges to the world beyond the physical. Hers is a deeply personal account, written in a very warm and loving style, which will greatly encourage and inspire those who are going through a similar experience. It is inspiring to see how dramatically things can shift: something devastating from a physical point of view, can actually be educational and life-changing from a spiritual point of view,
