Review
"Miller's book does not just advocate a 'role' for women in the Church. As the title indicates, she explains what authority women already have. This is not a polemical or apologetic work but one that engages feminist theology with a wonderfully creative, deeply theological and biblically-based explanation of what authority means and how female authority differs from yet is in relation to male authority." —Janet E. Smith, Professor of moral theology and the Fr. Michael J. McGivney Chair of Life Issues at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit
"This book is not what you expect. It is not what you've read before. It is an eye-opener for the importance of the question; for defining a clear alternative to androcentrism (male chauvinism), feminist fundamentalism, and a lukewarm compromise between them; and for a profoundly scriptural view of authority— one of the most disastrously misunderstood concepts in our culture." —Peter Kreeft, Author and Professor of philosophy at Boston College
"A full-throated 'thank you' to Monica Miller for this sublime response to Pope Francis' call for further development of our theology of woman. It would be a mistake to pigeonhole this work as a mere rejoinder to the demand for women priests. No, Miller has done her homework, gathering from Scripture, Tradition, Liturgy, the saints, Church Fathers, and even radical feminist leaders the fullest and clearest explanation—and redemption—of authority that I have ever read. Once Miller rescues authority from the banal distortion of the wielding of power and returns it to its true context of covenant and nuptial communion, it is not only the ministerial priesthood that is better understood but the entire Christian faith." —Damon Owens, Executive Director of Theology of the Body Institute
"Miller cuts through the angry façade of the women' s rights movement to define true femininity, designed by God, as revealed through the Catholic Church. After four decades in the often-brutal pro-life trenches and as a college professor, Miller can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any activist. She is perfectly suited to write about the authentic empowerment of women and provides a theology here that can heal a generation that has lost its way." —Patti Armstrong, Catholic author and speaker
"Perhaps at no other time in the history of the Church has there been a greater need for a clear, cogent understanding of the authority of the female person and from whence it derives. In her work, Dr. Monica Migliorino Miller cuts through the chimera put forth by the culture of the day and reveals the source of woman' s influence, effect, and power and why woman can 'aid humanity in not falling' and 'save the peace of the world. ' A challenging, hard-hitting, and completely liberating study of the authority of woman!" —Johnnette S. Benkovic, Founder of Women of Grace and EWTN host

She's Got it Right

This is a very good book that helps the reader sort out the thorny issue of why women cannot be priests in the Catholic Church. Miller provides a theology of authority that is really insightful and a refreshing look at the sacramental nature of male and female authority. Anyone who wants to understand the role of women in the Church should read her book. Thank you, Dr. Miller.

A treatise on the true nature of God
By A Customer
Thank you, Ms. Miller for blowing through the politically correct rhetoric that is debasing the foundation of the Church and our society.
In a very fair, well-informed book, Miller does an excellent job of debunking the misguided arguments of feminist theology. She sincerely (not vehemently) lays out her argument on the divine nature of God and his loving relationship to the Church (men and women).
It is not a justification for a horrific patriarchal system, but a loving commentary on the divine union of men and women and their relationship to God.

he also says that husbands must love their wives to the point of giving themselves up ...
By JP Nunez
Everybody knows that women have very little official, hierarchical authority in the Catholic Church, but Monica Migliorino Miller argues that there's more to authority than just being part of the hierarchy. Rather, women have a very special authority in the day-to-day lives of ordinary Catholics. For example, even though St. Paul talks about wives being subject to their husbands, he also says that husbands must love their wives to the point of giving themselves up for them. And this, Miller argues, is a form of submission, which implies that wives do in fact have a kind of authority over their husbands. Thus, men can't simply lord it over their wives as totalitarian despots. At the end of the book, Miller gives numerous examples of women who exerted great authority both in ancient Israel and in the Church. These women didn't have official, hierarchical authority, but they were able to exert great influence over many people and achieve many great things.
Miller also argues against the belief that because masculinity represents God in relation to the Church (which is feminine), then femininity must be seen as inferior. Against this, Miller shows the importance of femininity within Catholicism, particularly the importance of the Church as our mother.
This book isn't without its flaws, though. For example, when explaining the all-male priesthood, I never reached an "Aha!" moment where it all clicked. Throughout the book, there are a few places where I felt like Miller made some really good and interesting points but where she didn't bring it all together and make her point as strongly as she could. Nevertheless, I still highly recommend this book. Even though it may not have all the answers, it still provides a lot of valuable information about the dignity and role of women in the Catholic Church.
