About the Author
Dan Armstrong has been a full–time pastor for the past sixteen years and has been in ministry for more than a quarter century. He and his wife, Judy, left West Virginia in 2005 when the Lord called them to Texas to begin a new ministry. Today they pastor Genesis Ministries in Canyon Lake, Texas, which began as a chance to give "at risk" teenagers a Christ–centered living environment in which they could learn to have a positive effect on their community as the community has a positive effect on them. The ministry has now expanded to include adults who are struggling with addiction and those who desire to be mentored in ministry. They have also started a small but vibrant church, Genesis Fellowship. The Armstrongs have seven children and four grandchildren.

Do you love Christ? Then obey him.

What is the importance of obedience? What is the greatest motive to obedience? -'If ye love me,keep my commandments.' (John 14:15).Stephen Tyng,an Episcopalian minister from the 19th century, writes-"obedience to the commandments of God is required of us ...as a debt of gratitude to Christ...". If love for Christ has been wrought in our hearts,by the Holy Spirit of God,we will be compelled to no longer live for ourselves,but to offer our lives,as a living sacrifice,to the one who loved us and gave his life,to rescue us from the wrath and curse of God.

Does our obedience merit our acceptance with the Lord God? A.W.Pink(who went to be with the Lord in 1952)and whose written ministry continues to have significant usefulness offers this-"...the obedience of Christ formed an essential part of his priestly sacrifice...". It is this priestly sacrifice,on behalf of his people,that fulfills the requirements of God's law and makes his sacrifice efficacious for them.If this be the case,what are some of the blessings or fruit of obedience? In the excerpt from Pink's commentary on the book of John entitled 'Our Love And Obedience' -Pink asserts that he manifests or reveals himself to his obedient people and the great benefit of of this is that-"...he himself is made a blessed and glorious reality to us." To no more of God,what greater blessing can there be? Do you hunger and thirst to know him better? It is an indication of spiritual health if you do.

If we are a friend of Jesus Christ how will that be seen?If you are 'In Christ' he will be the greatest friend you will ever have.I think of a line from that beloved hymn 'What a friend we have in Jesus' ('all our sin and grief to bear').How then should we treat this dear friend? The author of 'The Existence And Attributes Of God' Stephen Charnock insightfully notes-that the believers obedience shows this- "it is by this you show yourselves the friends of Christ;by this you maintain his honor in the world." If you seek to honor the Lord,He will honor you as well,with blessings and usefulness,that will bring you great joy and peace,both in this life and the life to come.

From these various servants of 'The Most High' one gets a nice introductory overview on different facets of obedience.

About the Author
The Rev. Joanna J. Seibert MD is a professor of pediatrics and radiology at Arkansas Children's Hospital and the University of Arkansas who has been an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church for 14 years. Full of Candor and Inspiration

Although I’m not Episcopal—and my own Orthodox calendar of saints and special days differs from Rev. Seibert's—I can appreciate the power and the candor in these sermons. Like the one she preached on All Saints Day in 2007, commemorating both the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, as well as the assassination of Martin Luther King during her senior year of medical school in Memphis. Rev. Seibert remembers:

"Memphis became a police state. Clergy in Memphis decided to respond by marching to the office of the mayor, Henry Loeb. The ministers gathered at St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. At the last moment, the Dean, William Dimmick, who later became the Bishop of Michigan, went into the cathedral and took the cross from the high altar. Holding it high above him… he led the march down Poplar Avenue to City Hall…. He taught us where Christ was that day. Christ was out walking the streets of Memphis. Today my prayer is that at the end of this service we will remember Dean Dimmick’s example and symbolically carry your processional cross outside this building and into the streets of this city and this state."

This is a must read. Dr. Seibert's sermons for funerals are very touching. I have a friend who is dealing with a grandchild who is terminal and I think these sermons will be helpful for her.

Rev. William J. Bausch is a parish priest of the diocese of Trenton, New Jersey. He is the award-winning author of numerous books on parish ministry, the sacraments, Church history, storytelling, and homiletics. His award-winning books include Storytelling: Faith and Imagination, The Total Parish Manual, Once Upon a Gospel and Brave New Church. He was awarded the President’s Award in 1996 from the National Federation of Priests’ Councils for Parish Leadership, the Catholic Library Association’s Aggiornamento Award for Notable Contribution to Parish Life in 2004 and the Walter J. Enjoyable, insightful, informative, readable!

I recently stumbled upon this book from an earlier printing, and have enjoyed it so much, I have ordered a new copy from the 2015 printing. The author, William J. Bausch, a Catholic parish priest, demonstrates the importance and power of stories and storytelling. Exploring the Jewish and Christian traditions of storytelling, he also shares countless stories and anecdotes, both religious and secular. Throughout this insightful, enjoyable book, the author points us to the Larger Story found in sacred scripture, showing us how the gospel in story form can be applied to the smaller story of our personal lives.

Balanced, clear, calm defense of atheism

This book is aimed at readers without any formal background in philosophy. Its tone is thoughtful and calm. The author anticipates and addresses potential objections and counterpoints to the main arguments in a balanced way. Most accounts of atheism treat religious belief as unreasonable or unjustified, but this is not the strategy here -- the existence of a God is presented as a logical impossibility.

This book may be interesting to both theists and atheists as a starting point for conversation. The writing is clear and the underlying ideas will probably be accessible to a wide variety of readers, whether they agree or not with the the author's conclusions. I had an enjoyable experience reading this book.

A good cumulative case and the correct conclusion!

Franz Kiekeben studied (University of South Florida) and taught (Ohio State University) philosophy, having written for the SKEPTIC magazine and published academic articles on determinism and time travel. He recently sent me a book he has written called The Truth About God to review.

The book acts as a cumulative case against the existence of God which concludes by hoping to show that God is impossible, a stronger sort of claim than the usual probability claims we often see and use. Kiekeben romps through the usual arguments both for and against (the Christian) God, as we can see from the table of contents:

I must start out by saying that this book isn’t aimed at someone like me who has written books and pieces on these subjects, and who public speaks on them to various groups. No, this is aimed at the wobbly Christian in the middle, the person just getting into philosophy of religion, or the newfound atheist who needs some common ammunition to fight the fight.

So why buy this book? Well, for me, though I knew most everything in it, I enjoyed it, and it reminded me of so many things I wanted to write about. Indeed, it prompted three blog posts on the trot. In having the target audience as it does, Kiekeben makes a concerted effort not to trouble the reader with jargon. In fact, the extent of the philosophical jargon can probably be seen in the chapter titles of the morality sections seen above. This means it is a light and breezy read whilst still packing a philosophical punch. There is a lot in this book, covered concisely, and hinting at things which will pique the reader’s interest. Ideas of a perfect being and all the problems therein (which I have concentrated on in my recent ebook The Problem with "God": Classical Theism under the Spotlight) are not covered in huge tome-inducing manners, but are almost conversationally talked about with ease of effort. This is a good thing and will serve the audience really well. Indeed, as mentioned, for me it acted as a great reminder for loads of topics. The fact that I read this in totality is testament to this since my reading list is so long, and I am currently in the middle of eight books; that if it wasn’t worth my while, I wouldn’t have bothered. But it was, and I enjoyed it.

In the same way, if you want a book to sail through the gamut of arguments against, and criticisms of the arguments for, God, then this serves those purposes well. It will lead the newcomer on to new and rich pastures whilst reminding the old timer of great arguments and forgotten battlefields.

Kiekeben does make strong claims:

"It is a fairly simple matter to argue for the nonexistence of the biblical deity, or of the all-powerful, all-knowing, perfectly good being that most people believe in. But most atheists would say that where the general concept of God is concerned, nothing conclusive can be said. The great majority are willing to allow that God in this sense is at best highly improbable; they do not believe in him, but neither do they think his existence can be ruled out entirely. The central chapter in Dawkins’s The God Delusion is titled “Why there almost certainly is no God,” not why there definitely isn’t one, while the ads in the recent Atheist Bus Campaign in Britain merely stated that “there’s probably no God.” The view of just about every atheist, in other words, is that the existence of God is not, strictly speaking, impossible, and thus that no definitive demonstration of atheism is available.

I want to challenge this view. It seems to me that we can conclude with approximately the same level of certainty that no deity whatsoever exists… And the reason is that no such beings can exist, period. I admit this is a surprising claim. Even if it is possible to disprove the existence of certain gods, getting rid of all of them at once may appear to be completely out of the question. But in fact the argument I make is relatively short and simple, and can be understood even without any background in this topic." [p.5]

This is the crux of the book, then. The cumulative case leads towards the deductive conclusion that there is certainly no God.

So what is this argument from which Kiekeben can conclude this? Well, free will of course. Yes, my old favourite friend. As he states:

"This argument against the existence of gods is likely to be doubly controversial. Not only does it claim that God cannot exist – a stronger claim than is usually made by atheists – it in addition bases this conclusion on a rejection of something else people find difficult to abandon, our supposed freedom. The difficulties for the concept of freedom on which the argument depends, however, have been pointed out by numerous philosophers, and I for one do not see any way around them. Philosophers who continue to maintain that there is such a thing as free will (in our sense of the term) have never been able to present a plausible or even clear account of the concept they have in mind. The conclusion, then, appears to be inescapable. If, as I maintain, a being must have the kind of metaphysical freedom described in order to qualify as a deity, and if such a freedom is impossible, then there cannot be any deities, period.. The truth about God is that he does not and cannot exist. Atheism isn’t merely true; it is necessarily true." [p. 231]

What I love about this quote is that it sums up my approach to free will and theism so concisely; it is spot on. Theism, in all its forms which revolve around a judgemental God (unless you are a Calvinist or similar) supervenes on free will. If libertarian free will fails, then so does God. Libertarian free will is logically (and empirically) false; therefore, God is logically (and empirically?) false.

Now, there are some premises to properly validate here. And my criticism of Kiekeben is that he doesn’t necessarily do the robust spadework to do this. But that is not possible in the scope of this book as it would require an academic tome, perhaps, just to do that.

That said, the basic argument is there, and is, to me, incontrovertible: You want to believe in God, you’ve got to establish s sound version of free will. As I have mentioned elsewhere, this would be my tack in a debate on theism/atheism and I would start my stall out with William Lane Craig on exactly that point.

In sum, Kiekeben has taken on a big task here, and he both succeeds and doesn’t quite, because in some sense he can’t, with the nature of the book being a swift journey through the many arguments to move towards the one key argument: free will. Since the time and space and remit doesn’t allow him to go to town on the philosophy of free will and establishing that God must have it in order to exist in the way described by believers, then we must to some degree grant him his premises and thus his conclusion. I grant him them because he is right, but whether he conclusively shows that in the book is open to debate.

I would love for this to be the first of many books looking to do this. I attempted with my first book (Free Will? An investigation into whether we have free will or whether I was always going to write this book.) to show that free will does not makes sense, and so therefore neither does God. Kiekeben has done it. Let’ see the conversation continue.

So, good and enjoyable book; quick and jargon free; covers many arguments for and against God; concludes that God cannot exist because libertarian free will does not exist.

Excellent summary

...of the basic arguments that have long conclusively demonstrated the fundamental problems with Christianity . What this author asserts that is new is that he can conclusivly establishes that God (any god) does not and cannot exist. He does that using the logical issues with the argument that humans have free will. I think he will have problems here convincing believers who have never been persuaded by logical arguments anyway.

Still a good, well-written summary worth your time and money.

EASY TO READ AND THOROUGH

I had 4 books about the Blood of Jesus that I had been trying to slug through... This book caught my eye (thank you Holy Spirit!) And it is Easy! Easy! AND FUNNY!!! It is full of verses and very short examples. The author gives you revelation about the Blood of Jesus that will PUMPED UP your spiritual life! Jesus paid a HIGH price for us, UNDERSTANDING all the facets of the BLOOD, will make it ALLLLLLL worth it!!!!

I now have a better understanding of the Blood of Jesus after reading this book. It is written in a plain, simple style so that anyone should be able to understand it. I found it a pleasure to read, and I have often wondered about what all it means when someone talks (or writes) about His Blood. The best thing is knowing that when He died on that cross, He died for us and His Blood covered a multitude of sins.

About the Author
A Yi is a Chinese author born in 1976. After spending five years as a police officer, he quit to become the editor-in-chief of the bi-monthly literary magazine Chutzpah. He has written two collections of short stories, Grey Stories and The Bird Saw Me, some of which have been published in Granta and The Guardian, and he was nominated for the People’s Literature Short Stories prestigious award for Top Twenty Literary Giants of the Future in 2010. A Perfect Crime was published in China in 2011. He lives in Beijing.

Anna Holmwood translates literature from Chinese and Swedish to English. She was awarded one of the first British Centre for Literary Translation mentorship awards in 2010 and has since translated two novels, countless short stories for publication and samples for agents and rights sellers. She is currently working on a major series of Chinese martial arts novels by Jin Yong for MacLehose Press. In 2011 she cofounded the Emerging Translators’ Network to support early career translators, and was elected to the UK Translators Association committee in 2012. She lives in China.

excellent and perceptive work

The book's flap correctly points out some similarities with Kafka, Camus, and Dostoeyvsky; readers of these authors will be able to recognize the similarities. The translation does seem to be a bit awkward in places, but I cannot be sure of this, since I cannot read the book in the original language. The story is tight, and puzzling in parts. And the author creates many interesting metaphors. The story expresses a deeply and astutely perceived philosophy. The end explains what you did not understand earlier . . . "and when all that will be left is dancing dust."

A Perfect Crime by A Yi delves into the troubled mind ...

A Perfect Crime by A Yi delves into the troubled mind of a psychopath attempting to find meaning in a society he considers dehumanizing. The story begins as he concludes his only course of action is to commit the perfect murder. The existential crisis presented is similar to Crime and Punishment, and the like, but darker. It is a genuinely creepy and disturbing book. Despite that creepiness, it is hard to put down.

The book occasionally suffers from being a translation from the original Chinese, but Yi’s voice still comes through. He writes about a world of where technology is a “whore” that lures us to believe that meaningfulness is defined by the time spent on the news cycle. His wry observations of the absurd recall Vonnegut.

The young protagonist kills his classmate. The murder has no apparent motive but when the story reaches its ending the reason for the killing becomes clear. The story begins with a crime and then a hunt by the police for the killer; the tension and suspense are not immense but sufficiently tight to captivate the reader. The end of the tale, which is the best part of the book, takes on a deep philosophical and sociological examination of life and death. The protagonist’s senseless and wanton killing of Kong Jie is intended to demonstrate the meaninglessness of life. He emphasises this point by the careless disregard for his own life. Kong Jie is dead, so what? He is going to be executed, so what? The ultimate point, is, what about the rest of us? What about life itself? In the context of the overall picture of the vast and timeless universe, what is life? What is life when even the most magnificent stars also burn themselves out? It is only a matter of time. That is also the same point Camus was making in his version of a similar theme in ‘The Stranger’.

This English translation conveys the story and meaning well but there are pockets in which the translator seemed to have taken the Chinese text literally rendering the translation a little awkward. For example, it is not clear whether the line 'She was probably out of battery or spending time with her friends' was spoken by the victim's mother or the killer. The phrase 'out of battery' might have been a reference to Kong Jie’s cell-phone but the sentence as produced is too colloquial (when the context does not suggest that it was a colloquial statement). At various other places, the use of the word 'they' is not clear who it was meant to refer to.

There is also a misspelling of 'my butt' as 'by butt'. "Ma paid her back a long [time] ago' had the word 'time' missing. These are faults of the editorial team rather than the author or translator and mar what would have been a perfectly enchanting book.

and I absolutely love this manual

I have read this several times since June last year, and I absolutely love this manual! It has helped me tremendously in the process of reality creating, and connecting with my truth/authentic self. For me this is one the best out there on this subject, it resonates with me deeply, and connects with my process, in other words it works with me, not against me in any way. It is very precise, and concise. Non-judgmental, easy to read. and easy to understand. Well written, and channeled. I enjoy the format 30 chapters for 30 days, reading a chapter a day to absorb the information. Actually I highly recommend anyone who is interested enough on this subject, to read it many times, as reading it more then once, will truly ferment it internally, every time I read it over, I understand it more profoundly, as it becomes more natural to be a conscious creator. Practice is essential. Hope everyone who reads it gains something special as I did. :)

Life Changing Manual to a Joyful Life

I bought this in hard cover from a local book store and it has been life changing! It describes a process that will change your life, help you live with joy and freedom and teach you how to live at an unimagined level of peace and purpose.

But be warned: it is a manual. A textbook in fact for creating the life you desire. As I read, I knew I had to highlight and underline. Then I realized almost every line was colored. And many pages had flags to remind me to read them again. As I closed the book on that first read, I knew that it held many of the pieces I was missing to live a complete life, so I began again, this time making notes. And I filled a scribbler.

Too much to remember. So I started again, working my way through the information in the manual and again making notes. But this time, they were more personal - directions and methods of application of the teachings of the Family of Light that apply to me. I mentioned it to my friends and we've spent hours discussing the teachings, all of us applying them to the unique circumstances of our lives. They always work.

Amazing.

You can read this book casually and lightly - as just another book. Or you can study it, read and re-read, and allow it to change your life. The choice is yours.
