Way of the Bushman: Spiritual Teachings and Practices of the Kalahari Ju/'hoansiFrom Bear & Company

The first comprehensive presentation of the core teachings of the Kalahari Bushmen as told by the Tribal Elders

• Reveals how the Bushmen are able to receive direct transmissions of God’s love for healing and spiritual transformation

• Explores tribal legends and teaching tales, the importance of dreams and animals, and the origins of their dances, rituals, and ceremonies

Step into the imaginative realm of one of the oldest continuous cultures on Earth, the Kalahari Ju/’hoansi Bushmen. Translated by Beesa Boo, a Bushman, and interspersed with detailed commentary from Bradford and Hillary Keeney, this book presents the core teachings of the Kalahari Bushmen as told by the tribal elders themselves. Decades in the making, it constitutes the first comprehensive work on the world’s oldest tradition of healing and spiritual experience.

Told in their own words, these teachings reveal how the Bushmen are able to receive direct transmissions of God’s love in the form of the universal life force, n/om. The individuals who are filled with this force describe it as an awakened, energized feeling of love that inspires a spontaneous and heightened ecstatic awareness that opens mystical perception. Having your heart transfixed by this force enables true healing and spiritual growth to occur. Experiencing the force in your entire being, through a vision of “God’s egg”, awakens deep spiritual wisdom and extraordinary healing gifts. Those who “own the egg” are blessed with the ability to have direct communication with the Divine, a “rope to God,” and can communicate with others for all “ropes” are connected.

Conveying the deep love that is the dominant emotion of Bushman spirituality, the book explores tribal legends and teaching tales, the importance of dreams and encounters with animals, the origins of their dances, such as the giraffe dance, and specific rituals and ceremonies, including puberty rites for boys and girls.

“As the elder teachers of the Ju’/hoan Bushman (San) people, we hold the most enduring traditional wisdom concerning healing and spiritual experience. This book is a testimony of our ecstatic ways. We happily share our basic teachings about spirituality and healing with those whose hearts are sincerely open.”

Review
“Bradford and Hillary Keeney have broken through the dusty curtain that often separates anthropologists from the people whose beliefs and practices they want to understand. Instead of writing exclusively about their own impressions, they foreground the teachings of Ju’hoan Bushman elders from northeastern Namibia. Their parallel commentary shows how a form of circular interaction and change-oriented activities have kept the ancient religion and its practitioners alive and successful despite major social upheaval in their community over the past century or more. It is a poignant reminder that the opportunity to share the experiences described with rare insight in this ‘bible’ may never arise in the same way again.” (Janette Deacon, Ph.D., archaeologist and authority on Bushman rock art)

“Way of the Bushman is a powerful spiritual testament. The Kalahari Bushman elders provide a credible and extraordinary guide for the healing journey to radical ecstasy. This book will alter your consciousness and help you dance with the divine.” (Carl Hammerschlag, M.D., faculty member at the University of Arizona Medical School and author of Th)

“Rare ancient wisdom desperately needed in today’s world.” (Robbie Holz, coauthor of Secrets of Aboriginal Healing and author of Aboriginal Secrets of Awakening)

“First and foremost, Bradford Keeney has danced with the San (Bushmen) and met them at a kinesthetic level of understanding that is unparalleled in previous anthropological research. Having met the elder healers on their own terms, Brad developed a deep relationship that brought a new voice and insight to the representation and interpretation of their healing dance. Hillary and Brad have a very special physical and academic skillset and an exceptional dedication to research. This book reveals new depths in the beliefs and practices of San (Bushman) healing that will hopefully be as valuable for the San (Bushmen) as a record and guide in a fast-changing world as it is for the wider world to appreciate these extraordinary people.” (Chris Low, anthropologist and physician, African Studies Centre, University of Oxford)

“Other anthropologists had not succeeded in pushing through to the deep experience that is the key to Bushman spirituality. With Brad Keeney’s acceptance as a healer, hithero closed doors began to open. This work describes in previously unavailable detail how the Bushmen learn the techniques of transition and transformation, how they journey to the spirit realm, and how they climb the ropes of God. As we read the words of these Bushman elders, we can almost feel what it must be like to undertake such journeys.” (David Lewis-Williams, Ph.D., founder of the Rock Art Research Institute, University of Witwatersrand)

Chapter 2
Receiving N/om

The first station of being in relationship with n/om--God’s love, the source of the universal life force--is called n!aroh-//xam. It is where an owner of n/om, a n/om-kxao, first starts learning about n/om. It’s like he or she is in the first grade of n/om school. Here there is often a lot of fear.

If a healer sincerely stays with n/om and remains soft with an open mind and heart, he will be wonderfully transformed. His focus on power will disappear, and if he has the courage to not run away he will be reborn into a different feeling. This is when the heart rises. At this n/om station we feel the suffering of others and feel sad for them, as we want to help them so much that our heart starts to open even more than we thought possible. When we feel this way for other people, our fear goes away. This is when our dance turns in to the stomping movement of an awakened healer. This movement helps us not fall over as n/om gets stronger and each stomp on the ground sends more vibrations into the body. When healers stomp together in a dance we say that they are all walking on the same rope, helping each other climb the rope to God.

As we go from the beginning stage of being an owner of n/om, a n!aroh-//xam, to the second station of handling n/om, g!a’aman! ausi, we no longer want power. Beginning healers typically spend a lot of time at the first station as it takes time to learn how to raise the heart. Here the contradictions and paradoxes of transition must be understood, including giving up power to receive more power, giving up control as a means of gaining more control, using our voice more while finding that words are less able to come forth as music and auditory vibration become primary, and becoming emptier in order to become more full of n/om. The strongest and most experienced healers go straight to the second station, because their hearts rise very fast. In the beginning of your development as a n/om-kxao you shout and are angry at the ancestors and trickster gods; this ceases at the next station. Our feelings change, and this alters our relationship with the ancestors. Some of them will now follow and help us. This is when it is possible to heal by pulling out the sickness. At this stage, a n/omkxao is called a !aaiha.

The third station for a n/om-kxao is where we feel that we can give a nail of n/om. Here God uses our hands to transmit nails. This is a high level of working with n/om. We call it thara n/om. This is how we help someone become a healer or empower another healer. When a n/om-kxao advances to this station, he is called a tco-kxao. Here we find that we can heal someone by transmitting a clean nail rather than solely pulling out sickness or a dirty nail. This is when healing has no pain. We have moved from power to love, effortlessly enabling us to address problems and suffering more directly with healing n/om.

The dance steps are different for each station of handling n/om. In the beginning the healer must exert effort to dance. When the dance gets hot with n/om, the singing and clapping effortlessly move the dancer. Sometimes they make our steps very fast. When there is little singing our legs get weak and we are barely able to dance. N/om cannot get hot without enthusiastic n/om singing. When the women sing for the men’s dance it can be said that the women get cooked first and transmit n/om to the men dancers who then are able to reciprocate by touching the women and giving them nails in return. N/om circulates throughout the community, and no one can say whether the singers, drummer, dancers, or healer is most responsible for waking up n/om and keeping it on the move. Everyone participates in the circulation of n/om. This is why healing must take place inside relationship and community.

Editors’ Commentary
The movement through the stations of n/om can occur during a single dance for seasoned n/om-kxaosi, transitioning through them in any order or remaining in one or several stages during most of the dance. A beginning n/om-kxao, however, will only be able to go in and out of the first sation of n/om during a given dance. It typically takes many dances to move forward into another station of handling n/om.

Many men and women become n/om-kxao, owners of the feeling for n/om (n!aroh-//xam), but only a few n/om-kxaosi learn to pull sickness (!hui) and become a pulling doctor, or !aaiha. Even fewer are able to transmit nails and arrows, a n/om-kao who is a tco-kxao. Finally, it is rare for anyone to be a fully cooked n/om-kao or “heart of the spears,” a g=aqba-nla'an.

A rare spiritual gem
By T Marsh
The editors of Way of the Bushman have put together a rare gem in the spiritual library of books. This isn't just a story but the actual words and teachings of the oldest culture we know -- a culture that is becoming extinct and one that does not ordinarily record or write their sacred teachings. From the introduction, the bushman elders give testimony of their ecstatic spiritual universe and proclaim that the strongest healers are almost gone. As I read each page the teachings came alive and I felt happy reading about the ways in which they transform suffering, love God and each other and dance to keep the relationships right with all of creation and mystery. I am intrigued at the ecstatic emotion that comes to the strongest healers by way of dreams and deep feelings of love. The Keeney's give commentary to many of the core teachings and the insight given is unique in that Bradford Keeney is recognized as a "Heart of the Spears" or one who holds the strongest medicine and knows the ways of the bushmen from personal interaction with the strongest healers for more than a decade. For anyone serious about spirituality and getting a divine connection and learning raw and untamed insight into spiritual life and healing -- I highly recommend this book.

By Robert Musikantow
This book is a rare document. It concerns the Bushman of the Kalahari desert, the oldest known culture. Rather than an interpretation from the sidelines by academic anthropologists, this is a description direct from the few living ones who continue to hold their unique spiritual wisdom, and written by Brad and Hillary who have danced with them and experienced the ecstasy of heightened emotion and sacred vibration of which they are exemplars. Read this book in order to accept the gift that they offer to the world.

Unveiling some of the secret practices
By Rahasya Poe
Way of the Bushman: Spiritual Teachings and Practices of the Kalahari Ju/'hoansi
By Bradford Keeney, PhD, and Hillary Keeney, PhD

There’s much more to gaining knowledge than simple dialogue; the true essence of understanding comes from a deeper connection with a person, especially people such as the Kalahari Bushmen, who have ancient tribal knowledge passed down from generation to generation through ritual and ceremony. As Western society creeps in on our world, it’s comforting to know that people such as Bradford and Hillary Keeney are taking academic standards to a whole new level. Many great truths are being unlocked by those who seek first to “Understand” and then to be “Understood.”

A comprehensive look at the UFO rumors and scares of World War I

Lieutenant R.S. Maxwell took off in his BE2C fighter but saw nothing unusual until 8:25 when according to his report: "My engine was missing irregularly and it was only by keeping the speed of the machine down to 50 mph that I was able to stay at 10,000 feet. I distinctly saw an artificial light to the north of me, and at about the same height. I followed this light northeast for nearly 20 minutes, but it seemed to go slightly higher and just as quickly as myself, and eventually I lost it completely in the clouds." Such sightings occurred frequently during the war. The reasons are fascinating in themselves: the first is that aviation is in its infancy, so light phenomena at altitude are a new experience. The second is fear: for the first time a real threat came from the skies. It wasn’t just the Western Front: on August 21, 1915, 20 New Zealand soldiers saw eight bread-loaf shaped clouds over Hill 60, Suvla Bay. "A British regiment, the First-Fourth Norfolk, of several hundred men, was then noticed marching . . . towards Hill 60." They marched into the cloud, which lifted off the ground, and were never seen again.

In the age of 'Gentlemen don't read each other's mail', I have to disagree with the author and believe that many 'unknown sighting were actually sightings of German airships gathering intelligence from Aldis lamps. There are some, 'interesting' sightings of craft and occupants made during this period.

EFT for Christians (Eft: Emotional Freedom Techniques), by Sherrie Rice Smith

While Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) has been gaining in widespread use and popularity during the past decade, most Christians are unfamiliar with this gentle and astonishingly effective self-help tool. Those who have discovered its healing potential may be unsure how it fits in with their faith. Sherrie Rice Smith, RN (Retired) has an extensive faith-based EFT practice, and has pioneered the use of this breakthrough approach (also called “tapping”) with Christians. In this book she shows how to use Scripture while tapping, and how EFT can strengthen the prayer life of the believer. Packed with compelling case histories of both physical and emotional healing drawn from her Christian EFT practice, as well as her extensive nursing background, Sherrie explains the science behind Clinical EFT, and how it works in harmony with our divinely created physiology. She shows how a combination of good science and firm faith is able to provide dramatic relief from a wide variety of suffering, whether it is spiritual, emotional, or physical, and how to integrate this self-help method with the Christian life.

An Important New Book about EFT
By Melinda Utal-Martinez
I'm a long-time EFT practitioner with a successful private practice in Los Angeles. Part of what makes EFT such a rewarding concept and healing approach to use and to ponder is that new insights about it continue to unfold. One of the most dedicated members of the professional EFT community is Sherrie Rice Smith, who brings real clarity and great exuberance to the field. With her extensive training and continuing studies in the medical field (she's a retired RN), her philosophical inquisitiveness, her personal bravery, and her devout dedication to her Christian faith, she fills a position that no one else can approach.

Her unique perspective and authentic enthusiasm for EFT and healing is evident throughout her first book, EFT for Christians. She combines scientific rigor, personal experiences, and case studies with her steady dedication to the Christian faith. This is the book that will make it easy for people who are dedicated to Christianity to learn how to comfortably integrate EFT into their lives. The use of EFT as a self-help technique has dramatically changed Sherrie's life for the better and she is a leader in helping others see how easy it is make it a vibrant and helpful part of their daily lives as Christians, both to help themselves and others.

In addition to teaching EFT and having her own private practice where she helps clients, Sherrie has been of true support to other practitioners across the country. She continually inspires us to learn more and do more with this remarkable technique and in doing so, she lives the values of her faith, serving as a very positive influence for those who are Christians and those from different backgrounds. This is an insightful book and a great introduction for new readers. Kudos to EFT Universe and Energy Psychology Press for publishing it and to Sherrie for her dedication to writing this important book. Melinda Utal-Martinez, www.EmotionalFreedomWithEFT.com

Smith Walks Over the Bridge of Science and Religion
By Digsite
Hats off to Sherrie Rice Smith for her new book, EFT for Christians. Sherrie is a person immersed in both medicine and faith and has done an admirable job of integrating science and religion when it comes to EFT. She spends lots of time on the science and physiology of EFT and she does this from a faith perspective, as one who has a foot in both worlds. As a practicing ordained pastor of thirty-five years and an EFT Practitioner myself I recommend her work without reservation to anyone who wants to explore the effectiveness of EFT and integrate it into mainstream Christian thought and practice with integrity.

I found it fascinating to learn about the Christian aspects of this wonderful healing tool
By GrapeJams
"EFT for Christians" is a very informative, uplifting and interesting book! I found it fascinating to learn about the Christian aspects of this wonderful healing tool. The EFT mini-manual is included in the book, which is great to learn all the basics about the technique. Something I didn't know before was the psychological techniques of the set-up phrase. "Measure the intensity of your emotion associated with a traumatic memory, then pair your memory with a statement of self acceptance. This pairing utilizes two psychological techniques called exposure (remembering the trauma) and cognitive restructuring (self-acceptance). " I'm so glad I read this book and I recommend it to everyone.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Especially since the 14th Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, the Tibetan tradition has gained center stage in the West. This book is a simple and well-written introduction to the Tibetan variant of Buddhism, a global religion that has garnered increasing interest in the United States since Zen textbooks became available in the 1950s. In folksy English, the book explains the basics of the belief system, including the concepts of impermanence, attachment, suffering, and "emptiness suffused with compassion." Emphasizing that the Buddhist idea of "empty mind" and compassion are essentially innate and indistinguishable, the book offers simple meditation practices and visualizations (mostly having to do with concentrating on breathing) as a direct way to cultivate "nonconceptual compassion." Even though the book does not specifically target health care providers (meditation and compassion seem to be good for everyone), there are plenty of insights that will be worthwhile for caregivers. We are told that even if we are saddened because we cannot cure everyone, we can find some joy if we make our effort to help 100 percent. We are told that treatment includes gestures and nonverbal communication of reassurance, caring, calmness, and help in removing fear. We are asked to remember that we are all "waiting in line to die." Medicine and Compassion is most interesting when it touches on Tibet's unique cultural traditions. For example, it provides a dramatic glimpse into another conceptual world in its descriptions of the process of dying, during which, according to Tibetan beliefs, the spirit moves through various bardo realms, where mind-consciousness is reincarnated. Originally developed as a radical rejection of Hinduism 2500 years ago, Buddhism has always had an intense and rigorous dialogue with other religions on such issues as non-self, non-theism, and immanence. Unfortunately, this dialogue has not often taken place in the West, where Buddhism often finds itself in the environs of New Age spiritual consumerism. Although the book's introduction claims that "this is not New Age stuff," the book merges into New Age unrestrained "dispensations" as it emphasizes Buddhism as a religion of unlimited abundance that accesses the unrestricted Buddha within. This Westernized Buddhism has little to do with demand, limitation, obligation, and responsibility. Reaching enlightenment -- the arduous effort of making no effort -- is watered down to being unafraid to take a "vacation" from our hectic lives with 15 minutes of daily meditation while working toward "relaxation" (a word rarely found in any Buddhist canon). Buddhism becomes indistinguishable from what, in 1902, William James called the emerging American "Gospel of Relaxation." The weakness of this book is most evident in its discussion of Tibetan medicine itself. In fact, recognizable Tibetan medicine is not 2500 years old, as the book claims. Rather, Tibetan medicine is an amalgam of Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Hippocratic thought, synthesized with indigenous shamanism in a series of conferences inaugurated during the consolidation of the Tibetan Empire between 634 and 755 A.D. This broad-minded acceptance of diverse traditions is a rare historical example of active medical pluralism. Scholars accept that translations of some Hippocratic texts are embedded in canonical Tibetan medical books. In reading Medicine and Compassion, one easily recognizes ideas from Hippocrates's On Decorum, which states that the physician should "bear in mind his manner of sitting, [maintain] . . . decisive utterance, brevity of speech, composure, diligence, care, replies to objections, calm self-control, concentration, readiness to do what has to be done. . . . Perform all this calmly." In a curious way, the journey to the East in this book brings the reader back to Western medicine's point of departure. Medicine and Compassion is a delightful book, but for accounts that are more intellectually challenging, I would recommend Edward Conze's classic Buddhism (1951); for Tibetan Buddhism, Chogyam Trungpa's Cutting through Spiritual Materialism (1974); and for Buddhist health care perspectives, Lawrence Sullivan's Healing and Restoring (1989). "A simple and well-written introduction to the Tibetan variant of Buddhism. For example, it provides a dramatic glimpse into another conceptual world in its descriptions of the process of dying, during which, according to Tibetan beliefs, the spirit moves through various bardo realms, where mind-consciousness is reincarnated. [...] A delightful book." (Ted Kaptchuk, in the New England Journal of Medicine)

"I was dumbfounded by how much Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche comprehends the emotional challenges facing doctors in relationship to their patients. He nails it time and time again. Magnificent! I shall continue to reread it just for the pleasure of the teachings, for the clarity of his mind, and the purity of his heart. This is a very worthy project." (Jon Kabat-Zinn, M.D., author of Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are)

"Medicine and Compassion is a wonderful guide for caregivers to develop compassion and skill in helping others from their deepest heart. A very practical, easy to read, and much needed book." (Judith Orloff, M.D., author of Positive Energy)

"Among recent Buddhist publications, Medicine and Compassion is unique in being directed at medical professionals. In it, Chokyi Nyima pairs homespun advice for providing the best possible care for patients with expositions on Buddhist understandings on suffering and embodiment. In the introduction, David Shlim, MD, discusses a common problem among doctors and health care workers, namely that they often erect an emotional barrier between themselves and their patients. Chokyi Nyima offers an alternative approach, one that applies the Buddhist training in compassion to establish bonds of trust in the doctor-patient relationship. Interesting adaptations of Buddhist principles are offered [on such subjects as] the art of healing and how to assist patients through the dying process. The book concludes with chapters that introduce the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of the death process and a brief overview of Tibetan medicine." (Buddhadharma)

"It would be a mistake to think that only an adherent of Buddhism could gain from reading, reflecting, and acting on this book's ideas. Medicine and Compassion provides practical guidance to anyone who seeks to become more compassionate." (from the foreword)

"This book will be of value to any health worker who has a sincere wish to help his or her patients and who wants to nuture that wish without burning out. It will also be of value to any health worker who once had this wish and would like to recover a deep sense of caring and compassion. There is also much of value here for those who care for the terminally ill. [The book should also be read by] anyone involved in the teaching of health workers, especially those who provide clinical care." (Journal of Travel Medicine)

"Like most doctors, I sometimes lack compassion. Once, as an intern, exhausted beyond caring, I discharged a favorite patient from the hospital despite his obvious downward spiral. My so-called excuse? I needed to lower my inpatient census! Today, almost 30 years later, I am still pained when I remember the baleful looks that he and his wife cast my way when he was readmitted the following morning. They knew that I had abandoned him, and so did I. That I can clearly recall such a moment is telling. Medicine and Compassion: A Tibetan Lama's Advice for Caregivers is full of wisdom for any doctor whose well of medical empathy has at some time run dry. It represents the collaboration of a Tibetan Buddhist monk from Nepal and a Western-trained doctor, David Shlim, who first crossed paths when Shlim was director of the largest Western medical clinic in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Shlim now lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and has recently led several courses with his longtime friend and teacher. In writing this book, the two have tapped a genuine need in contemporary American medicine. The first section of the book touches on universal truths, as well as classic Buddhist teachings. However, a central theme of this section that is beyond debating is the profound influence of emotions and mental attitude on the experience of aging, sickness, and death. The second section of the book examines our potential for and various means of achieving a greater level of compassion. In the third section, come simple but profound thoughts on how to render the best possible care to all patients-including the aged, irritable, aggressive, or uncooperative- as well as how to nurture lifelong attitudes that ease the process of dying. The book ends with an overview of the 2500-year-old tradition of Tibetan medicine, in some ways a surprisingly modern "science" in its broad application to physical illness, bad energy or evil influence, and emotional disorders. Medicine and Compassion is easy to recommend, because it squarely confronts one of medicine's perennial challenges- namely, how to grow in wisdom and kindness, as well as in knowledge, and how to care for patients with all of the above. In my view, these matters are not given sufficient attention in many modern clinical purviews. In this data-driven, technologic era of doctoring, the spiritual focus is easily lost. Medicine and Compassion is a good reminder of the lessons that ancient teachings and contemporary religion can offer to our collective 21st century profession and to our individual humanity as healers." (Clinical Infectious Diseases)

Timeless Wisdom
By Charles R. Atkins
Medicine & Compassion is an important book. It should be required reading for physicians, medical students, nurses, caregivers, and hospice staff. Every family should have it on their bookshelf. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and even non-religious people will benefit from this book because the ideas are about the human condition which transcends all differences of faith. In a word, this book is a treasure.

We all grow old, get sick, and die. Impermanence, uncertainty, and sorrow permeate our very existence. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David R. Shlim, M.D., answer the important questions of why we get sick and to how to respond with compassion and mercy, when illness or impending death are at hand. One could say that it is a manual to understanding our own nature and mortality.

The narrative tone of the book is intelligent and merciful - never sugary or overdone. I could really feel the subtle, yet vibrant life energy of the book as it conjured forgotten images and feelings. It caused me to reflect on the end of life care that I administered for my parents and brother. I was able to see what was good and what was lacking in my care for them, without feeling a sense of regret. In fact, I gained a sense of optimism for the future.

As a writer on Buddhist healing, I found this to be a perfectly cut gem. Its words and inferences reflected the light of wisdom. I found it an invaluable tool for encouraging the sick and suffering. I was especially impressed with the author's end of life guidance in the chapter "Easing the Process of Dying." As a Buddhist for more than 30 years, I've read many works on death, dying, and the bardos. Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and Dr. Shlim explain this subject in a way that can satisfy the average person or the spiritually advanced. Most of all, the reader will be inspired to improve their own life and mind.

I highly recommend this book. Just as an outdoorsman needs a compass, so too can this book guide one in challenging times.

Providing "medicine" that can't be purchased.
By Stephen Bezruchka
I've been practicing medicine for over 30 years and been a patient as well. What is it that you want in a 'healer.' Compassion. But it doesn't come in a pill bottle, nor at the end of an endoscope, nor between the scalpel and the skin. Compassion is the critical part of caring that helps people get better. For those of you who take care of patients, this book provides a perspective you won't find in print anywhere else. Would that this book was required reading in medical school, residency, and at all continuing medical education courses! Then the US might become a little healthier than the sorry state it is in now.

A remarkable book
By Nancy Piper Jenks
Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and David Shlim have articulated beautifully an invaluable lesson in learning how to encompass compassion into our encounters with patients. As nurses and physicians we work with great dedication and energy to help our patients move toward a healthier state of being. The process sometimes seems very easy and gratifying however, sometimes we are stuck and not sure why. This book offers practical advice to the reader of how to more effectively approach each patient with kindness, wisdom and care. Since reading the book, I have noticed subtle changes in my own approach to patients and have felt a new energy and insight.

The Works of John Newton (4 Volume Set), by John Newton

When John Newton, ex-sea captain and, as yet, unsuccessful candidate for the Church of England ministry, finished his first book (an autobiography) in 1762 there was no ready publisher. Any thought that he was destined to become one of the best known authors of his age would have been as fantastic as the last 37 years of his life. But in both cases the improbable came about. Becoming curate of Olney, a small village in the south of England, in 1764, Newton there laid his reputation as an evangelical writer, pre-eminently by his published letters and by the Olney Hymns (including 'How Great the Name of Jesus Sounds', 'Glorious things of Thee are spoken' and 'Amazing grace'). Before the end of his subsequent pastorate at St. Mary Woolnoth, London (1780-1807), his writings were prized around the world from America to Australia.

Newton has a firm place in the classics of Christian literature. While his style is strong and clear, it is the spiritual attractiveness and importance of his main themes which secure the permanent value of his writings. Most of his books came, unpremeditated, out of a need to help his congregation or individual hearers, and it is in practical helpfulness towards Christian living that he excels. If he is loved rather than admired, it is for this reason. Conformity to Christ is the one subject upon which his themes finally focus ('It will not be a burden to me at the hour of death that I have thought too highly of Jesus, expected too much from Him myself, or laboured too much in commending and setting Him forth to others'). Not surprisingly, Alexander Whyte could write, 'For myself, I keep John Newton on my selectest shelf of spiritual books: by far the best kind of books in the whole world of books.'

The text of this new four-volume edition of The Works of John Newton has been entirely reformatted, producing a clear and easily navigable set of documents for today's reader.

Review
'In few writers are Christian doctrine, experience and practice more happily balanced than in the author of these letters, and few write with more simplicity, piety and force.' --Charles H. Spurgeon

'What thousands have derived repeated profit and pleasure from the perusal of these utterances of the heart! Nor ever will they cease to be found means of grace whilst God has a church on earth.' --William Jay

'It was Newton's goodness rather than his greatness that rendered him so especially attractive the abundance of the grace of God that was in him. In this respect he was preeminent, justifying the eulogy of William Jay who speaks of him as one of the most perfect instances of the spirit and temper of Christianity he ever knew. Some men excel in one virtue more than another. But Newton's character was beautiful in its entireness. It rested on a solid foundation the initial Christian grace of humility, and of this grace he was a most striking example. He never for a moment forgot that by the grace of God he was what he was.' --Josiah Bull

About the Author
Born in London in 1725, deprived of the godly influence of his mother before he was seven years old, John Newton was but two years at school before he went, at the age of eleven, on his first voyage with his father, a sea captain. From that time till the age of thirty, when his health was broken by a stroke, Newton endured the wild rigours of a life before the mast, including being press-ganged aboard a naval vessel and flogged when captured after desertion. Only his love for the youthful Mary Catlett preserved him from suicide. He was released from the navy only to join in the slave traffic across the Atlantic, and was reduced almost to death on the Guinea coast before being delivered by a friend of his father's.

Throughout these sad events there ran a divine purpose; and while Newton forgot the Saviour whom his mother had so often commended to him in childhood, and while he became, like one of old, a 'blasphemer and injurious,' it was all leading to a day in the midst of a tremendous storm at sea when he was brought to say: 'I stood in need of an Almighty Saviour, and such a one I found described in the New Testament. The Lord had wrought a marvellous thing.'

Best Collection of Newton's Writings in Print
By Michael Davenport
To really understand any person from the past (before voice recordings) you must read what they actually wrote. While eyewitness accounts and researcher's writings may help they can never take the place of the person's actual account written by himself. This is the strength of reading a man such as Newton in his own words. The Banner of Truth set is the most accessible publication of the majority of Newton's writings which are in print. It is foundational for a correct understanding of Newton.
The set consists of:

Vol.1--Memoirs of Newton (With Remarks by Richard Cecil). Forty-one letters on religious subjects by Omicron and Vigil (Newton). Cardiphonia (Letters by Newton).
Vol.2--Cardiphonia (continued). Six Discourses (sermons) as Intended for the Pulpit. Twenty Sermons Preached in the Parish Church of Onley.
Vol.3--A Review of Ecclesiatical History. Olney Hymns.
Vol.4--Fifty Sermons (abridged by Newton).
Vol.5--Tracts (3). Sermons (7). Letters to a Wife (1750-1754). Letters to a Wife (1754-1785).
Vol.6--Letters Intended as a Sequel to Cardiphonia. Misscellaneous Papers Extracted from Periodical Publications.

By all means purchase this set if you can. Newton is simple and practical. A real treasure of rich spiritual wisdom that will reward anyone who takes the time to mine its nearly 4000 pages.

A Treasure of Christian Wisdom and Grace!
By Shane Lems
I agree with the earlier two reviewers: this six-volume set of Newton's works is an outstanding collection to own. On almost every page Newton highlights the sovereign grace of God in Christ. As a pastor, this set has brought me conviction, refreshment, and encouragement, as well as motivation to press on in the ministry.

In case you were wondering, the font is quite large and easy to read (it is not a microfilm or copy). Of course the punctuation and syntax are a bit dated, but the set is edited and laid out well. There's even a decent Scripture index and topical index at the end of volume six.

I realize that a used set might go for over one hundred dollars, but I do believe it is worth that. The letters themselves are perfect for reading one or two per day (meaning this set makes for great devotional reading). And, above all, Newton constantly directs the reader's attention to our loving Savior who abounds in grace towards sinners.

Excellent and enjoyable
By Andrew Flanagan
I must admit, I'm still on Volume 1 as of right now but I thought I'd share my thoughts so far.

I think I was expecting a much more difficult book to read. I was pleasantly surprised with the accessibility of the writing despite the depth of the content. This is great stuff. It's easy to get caught up in the spiritual "weasel-words" of the day. There are many contemporary authors right now that are writing many excellent things, but it really is refreshing to get a different perspective on spiritual matters. Metaphors and analogies that are unfamiliar but quite striking are riddled through this work.

I'll have to provide a follow-up review when I finish this work (hopefully before 2010!) but as of now, I heartily recommend to anyone interested.

90 Days to Wholeness is highly recommended to any one who struggles with p&m addiction or other sins. This devotional is best read in the safety of a small group or trusted community for transparency, encouragement, and more importantly, accountability. Each devotional ties into a scripture verse and there are discussion questions to follow. The discussion questions were my favorite part about this devotional because it opened dialogue with the group & I that would have never happened had we not read through 90 Days to Wholeness together. I highly recommend this devotional if you are a woman who currently struggles with p&m or other strongholds. Scripture tells us to confess our sins to each other so we can be healed and healing can only begin when we're open with our struggles. 90 Days to Wholeness is a good place to start in the recovery process. Definitely worth a read!

By Anne.
I have spent over a decade alongside Crystal-from her first confession of her addiction to pornography, to her recovery, and finally seeing God's mighty hand over her as she leads other women in their battles to sobriety and health. This devotional is strong enough to stand alone as a jumping-off place to your recovery, and it pairs well with her book Dirty Girls Come Clean. There is no other resource like this out there...written by a professional...and written by a friend. It's Biblical, it's well written, and it's practical. Crystal equips you with all the tools you need and all the encouragement you desire as you pursue freedom.

I wouldn't recommend the Kindle edition. hopefully it comes out in print.
By kdf
I wouldn't recommend the Kindle edition. so much of it was hyperlinks. i have many devotionals, christian growth books, and self help books with worksheets and such. many of the ebook versions do have hyperlinks but they are extras. content you can skip if you like. when you are trying to limit your internet use, this seems counterproductive. plus it's really annoying having to go back and forth. Since you have to write stuff down plus read and then skip to the internet.. i'll wait on this until the print comes out. i did like Dirty Girls very much which is why i purchased this so i could kick my habits and deal with my hurts.

A great read, and a very uplifting story.
By Reasonable Reviewer
This is a heart warming story of true love, acceptance, and forgiveness.

Emmalyn finds herself in the northern reaches of Minnesota and Wisconsin far away from the man she loves, because he committed a crime and is doing the time.

This is a wonderful, wonderful story told with skill and will a lot of heart.

** Spoilers Follow **

The story takes place in the last two years of Greg's sentence. While Emmalyn makes the best of things, she has some adventures with local characters that both challenge and expand her compassion.

When the book begins, the reader is most uncertain about the future of Emmalyn's and Greg's marriage, but by the time we reach Chapter 30, we both know, accept, and are gladdened by the fact that they do get together.

Thomas Aquinas said that someone who has never doubted the existence of God doesn't believe in God. If Emmalyn had never questioned her marriage to Greg while he was in prison then I'm not sure the reader could have accepted that their love was real.

Ms. Ruchti, the author, did a skillful job of weaving the realities of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota into the book. She used local flavor with foods, sayings, and insightful descriptions of the countryside to make you feel as though you were there.

While she not pummel anyone with it, it is clear that Ms. Ruchti comes from a religious background in a very positive way. That positive aspect shines through as a ray of hope and love in the book.

All in all, a great read, and a very uplifting story.

Another winner from Abingdon Press
By Trudie Barreras
Cynthia Ruchti is another author whose work I consider myself blessed to have encountered via the “Vine for All” category of “Christian Books”. Her deeply insightful and beautifully written novel “As Waters Gone By”, published by Abingdon Press, is another winner from that amazing publishing house. Although it is my policy NOT to check on reviews by others before writing my own, I will not be surprised to discover that this one has received so many accolades mine will be merely icing on the cake.

Of the numerous things that made this an extremely meaningful read for me, perhaps the most significant is the description of the conflict resulting from Max’s incarceration and Emmalyn’s ambivalent response to it. As it happens, over the past 30 years or so, my husband Ray has had a ministry of ongoing correspondence with a large number of inmates. He has visited several of them during their time of imprisonment; had telephone communication with some of them; and in several circumstances maintained contact after their release to various parole or probation situations. Therefore I am absolutely able to verify the authenticity of Ruchti’s description of the difficulty in communicating under those conditions, which forms such an important plot element in this novel.

Although this book is deeply imbued with a genuine spirit of love, faith and hope, it is at no point saccharine or cliché. All of the characters are vibrant and realistic, in a decisively off-beat sort of way. The discussion of Emmalyn’s own resentment of her mother's and sisters’ attitudes as they impact her own feelings and actions offers a powerful counterbalance and additional infusion of realism. In all, I’m very glad that the paucity of meaningful offerings on my Vine Queue led me to seek out this book.

As Waters Gone By -- Something to Savor and Not to Rush Through
By Pamela S Meyers
Have you ever read a book you didn't want to end because you knew when you read the last page you'd have to say "goodbye" to characters you'd come to see as friends and the setting you'd come to wish you could live in or, at the very least ,visit? That's how As Waters Gone By affected me. I could have read the story faster, I suppose, but I took my time, wanting to savor every moment.

Ever since I first learned of Madeline Island, the only island in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore that is inhabited, I've wanted to visit there and write my own story set in that wonderful unique place. Seeing the island through Cynthia Ruchti's beautiful descriptions hasn't changed that feeling one bit. Located across a wide channel from Bayfield, Wisconsin in the western end of Lake Superior, the island is the northernmost point of Wisconsin and just about the furthest point from my hometown located in the southeastern point of the state.

Ruchti's characterizations are top notch and so much on point that even if a character doesn't have their own Point of View, you feel like you know them deeply. I fell in love with all of them. As the story carries the reader through the emotional and spiritual arc of the main character, Emmalyn, you come to know her and what has formed her to be the woman she is at the first page and what she's become on the last page.

The author's descriptive style makes this writer's heart dance with joy. Like one of the book's endorsers, I found myself highlighting some of the phrases that grabbed me. Phrases like "An ooze of light woke her" or "Tears she repressed scalded her eyes on their way out." A very small sample what's in store for you when you open the book for the first time.

I highly recommend this book. But don't try to rush through it. Enjoy it like a tasting the world's finest chocolate and let it linger awhile on the tongue before swallowing. I've no doubt I will one day read this book again. It's that good.

I was gifted with this book by a friend and did not purchase it. But if I hadn't received it that way, I would have bought it.
