Beneath a surface appearance of obedience to Islamic authority, however, he detects reflections of Arabia's heritage of diversity (where Shi’ite and Sufi tendencies predating the Saudi era survive in the face of discrimination) and the effects of its exposure to Western mores.

SAUDI ARABIA IS THE WORLDS LARGEST OIL PRODUCER SO THIS BOOK SHOWS YOU ON THE ONE HAND HOW THERE ARE LAVISH DISPLAYS OF WEALTH IN AIR CONDITIONED SHOPPING MALLS, DESIGNER BOUTIQUES ON THE ONE HAND YET IT IS A COUNTRY WHERE WOMEN ARE FORBIDDEN TO DRIVE BY LAW. ROOTED IN PREJUDICES ITS MISSION TO WIPE OUT IDOLATRY, WOMEN HAVE TO ADOPT FULL FACIAL VEIL IN PLACE OF HEADSCARVES, THEY HAVE 5,000 STRONG RELIGIOUS POLICE FORCE WHO TRAVEL AROUND VILLAGES IN 4 X 4 VEHICLES ENFORCING PRAYERS, SEXUAL SEGREGATION, FEMALE DRESS CODES. ITS HAD A STRONG ISLAMIC ARMY INSPIRED BY THE CALL OF JIHAD WITH INCREASED SOCIAL SPENDING.
