Reformed Dogmatics: Christology, by Geerhardus Vos

Like books, people can become 'classics.' Great in their day, but richer and more fulfilling with time. Not yet a classic, Vos's never-before-published Reformed Dogmatics is more like a lost Shakespeare play recently discovered. --Michael Horton

Until recently, Reformed Dogmatics was only available in its original Dutch. But now you too can access Geerhardus Vos' monumental work of systematic theology. This brand-new English translation was edited by biblical theologian and Vos expert, Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.

Review
Like books, people can become 'classics.' Great in their day, but richer and more fulfilling with time. Not yet a classic, Vos's never-before-published Reformed Dogmatics is more like a lost Shakespeare play recently discovered. There seems to have been a flurry in recent years of systematic theologians writing with an eye for biblical theology. With this series we now have a biblical theologian writing a systematic theology. Thanks to Lexham Press for giving us such a long-awaited but impressive access to this much-discussed gem.
--Michael Horton, Prof. of Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

The state of access to deep, historic, orthodox Reformed theology has progressed exponentially in the last decade or so. Resources previously inaccessible to many have now become available to a vastly wider audience. In my view, the capstone of this accessibility is in this masterful work of Geerhardus Vos. Vos has the singularly unique accumen and ability to summarize and state concisely some of the deepest truths of Reformed theology. These volumes will now be my first recommendation to anyone who wants to understand the riches of the Bibles' teaching in a compressed and clear way. Thanks to Richard B. Gaffin Jr., to the translators, and to Lexham Press for putting this work into our hands.
--K. Scott Oliphint, Prof. of Apologetics and Systematic Theology, Westminster Seminary California

This translation of Vos' Dogmatiek is the last link in access to his magnificent oeuvre. English readers will now be able to match the Princetonian's commitment to historic Reformed doctrinal orthodoxy with his pioneering work in redemptive-historical biblical theology. The interaction is refreshing as well as pace-setting. Kudos to publisher and translator alike for undertaking this project.
--James T. Dennison, Jr., Academic Dean and Prof. of Church History and Biblical Theology, Northwest Theological Seminary

Excellent Resource
By Joey Parker
A few years ago I was introduced to Geerhardus Vos. I was studying some introductory works on Biblical Theology and kept noticing a title being referenced. That book was Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments which I subsequently purchased and which still has a prominent place on my bookshelf today. I have found Vos' writing to be both theologically rich and accessible. Originally published in 1896 Reformed Dogmatics: Volume Three: Christology was a titled that was previously unavailable to English readers. Thankfully Lexham Press and Richard Gaffin Jr. (Translator and Editor) have now made available this systematic work from the gifted Biblical Theologian Vos.

Volume Three:Christology follows Volume One:Theology Proper which covered the being attributes and work of God and Volume Two:Anthropology which covered the nature of man, sin and the covenant of grace. In any systematic theology the work of Christ should find a central role. As Gaffin states, "the heart of any sound systematic theology or dogmatics is its treatments of Christology. Christ as the center of the entire saving self-revelation of the triune God finds full and rich expression in this present volume. There is much here to be read and reflected upon with great profit." I wholeheartedly agree with Gaffin's statement about the importance of Christology as well as the rich treatment that it gets in this volume by Vos.

Vos' work on Christology is divided into 5 chapters. They are: 1) Introduction 2) Names 3) Person and Natures 4) Offices and 5) States. The introduction begins with 3 short questions, the last of which provides the topics for the following chapters. In the chapter on names Vos explores the significance of the names: Jesus, Christ, Lord, Son of God and Son of Man. In answering the question "What is the specific meaning of the name Christ?" Vos first shows the significance of being anointed, namely, that "it is a declarative, explanatory act that occurs both for the person himself as well as for others and is the proof that he is authorized to exercise a certain office." An secondly, "it is at the same time an equipping act whereby the gifts of the office are granted to the anointed person." Building on this thought Vos explores several "elements" that are now understood in the name Christ. First, "the Mediator is an office-bearer who has received an appointment and appears in the world on behalf of the Father...Christ has received a mission from the Father. He has not set Himself up as covenant Surety, but He has become Mediator in completer subjection to the will of the Father." Secondly, "Sovereignty attaches to every office....Christ as anointed comes to us in each of His offices with authority, and demands submission." Thirdly, "also belonging to the anointing is an equipping of the human nature of Christ by the Holy Spirit for the exercise of His offices as Mediator....this occurred especially on two solemn occasions: at the baptism in the Jordan and at the transfiguration on the mountain." And Fourthly, "as the Mediator, Christ stand in a relationship to the members of the covenant of grace in which He cannot stand to them as Jesus. Being anointed is something that He has not only for His members or for the benefit of His members but also in fellowship with His members. Saving, in contrast belongs exclusively to Him and takes place entirely outside of them." This short treatment on the names of Christ will surely be a blessing to all who dig in and dwell on what is written.

Next, Vos answers 62 questions on the Person and Natures of Christ. As in previous volumes Vos not only lays out sound doctrinal thinking but refutes false teaching about Christ. An example of this can be seen in his examination of the Modalists/Sabellians and Arian heresies. Chapter 4 covers The Offices of Christ. Here there are 98 questions related to His offices of prophet, priest and king. The final chapter focuses on the States of Christ. Here Vos explores 71 questions concerning Christ's humiliation and exaltation. As I am now finishing the third volume in the set I continue to be impressed with the words of Vos in these works. This volume on Christ is one that will be a blessing to all who read it. Excellent work!

The editing of this book is simply outstanding. The dust jacket is very nicely designed and looks good on a bookshelf. The book itself has a high quality binding on it. The text itself is very crisp and clear. I read a lot and have come to notice that not all paper and ink are alike and the quality of the print in this book makes it very easy on the eyes during extended reading. Overall, I am very pleased with this work and am thankful for the publishers, editors and translation work. This is an excellent resource for the church and I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book from Lexham Press in exchange for an honest review.
