Makes clear what happened to Christ's apostles and church

What I liked:
This book keeps it simple but gives an abundance of scripture and historical reference. You know a short way into this read that THIS author actually studied and didn't just take anyone's word for it. You also are able to see WHAT HAPPENED to Christianity, how it got so big and so divided. I appreciated that a lot. I also enjoyed the study into the history of Paul, Simon, and where the early apostles and church members went after Christ's death.

What I didn't like:
It is clear that a great deal of work was invested in the research behind this book. More graphs and timelines or a supporting webpage with an interactive timeline like a museum would have would have been nice additions. I'm visual, and this book makes clear to me the progress of Christ's little flock down through history but more visuals would further enrich the experience of this read.

Conclusion:
This book makes it plain that if you want Christ's faith then you have to study and find where He is working today. He lived and taught and established a very different gospel and church than what has become popular Christianity. You really have to read your bible, pray and look to find God's truth. This book is a great help in that direction.

Church History According to Armstrongite Cults

Armstrongite cults claim that there has been a parallel stream of Saturday Sabbathkeepers since the apostolic era, and that non-observers belong to a false form of Christianity characterized by Sunday observance. Gerald Flurry is part of the Armstrongite cult called Philadelphia Church of God.

Their claim is that non-observers are under the "Mark of the Beast" because of Sabbath-breaking.

Along with Sabbath-keeping, they teach errors in just about every category of theology, including claiming that they will be God in the resurrection and that they are the true church. They claim that the rest of Christianity is a false version of the true faith, and that those who belong to such organizations are "so-called believers".

The underlying mentality of Armstrongites is based, in part, on presuppositions that they obtained from Alexander Hislop's book "Two Babylons", which claims that the Roman Catholic church and Protestants are the result of the Babylonian Mystery Religion, which is the worship of Nimrod and Semiramis.

Hislop's book has been discredited soundly by scholars, as Nimrod and Semiramis are portrayed as husband and wife, and they didn't even exist in the same century. In addition, the form of reasoning used to relate all pagan religions to the worship of Nimrod and Semiramis is very poor, and scholars scoff at it.

In addition, Herbert Armstrong "borrowed" a lot of teachings from the Seventh Day Adventists and Joseph Bates, although he claimed that he restored "new truth" that had not been taught since the apostolic era.

Regarding Armstrongite views of church history, their assertions are also very poor. For instance, they claim the Waldensians were Sabbathkeepers due to the word Insabati being used in regards to them. Actually Insabati applied to their footwear, and not to keeping the Sabbath..the words only sound similar. In addition, some of the groups may have described themselves as Sabbathkeepers, but were actually talking about Sunday and not the Sabbath.

Gerald Flurry is a former disciple of Herbert Armstrong, who taught that Sabbathkeeping was the sign of a true believer, and that those who don't observe the Sabbath (Saturday) are not saved. I belonged to an Armstrongite cult for over a decade. Save yourself a lot of time if you're a seeker and find a good, solid church like Evangelical Free Church of America.

Regarding the Sabbath, I recommend Sabbath in Christ by Dale Ratzlaff. In addition, I recommend a series called Fourth Commandment by Dan Caffese on SermonAudio. About the Author
PAUL BRUNTON (1898-1981) is one of the twentieth century's most brilliant spiritual writers. Beyond the mystic Orient

The ever-present misconception prevalent in the West that Yoga is a technique of physical postures required a book of this nature to clear out-of-the-way the innumerable obstacles found in the way of seekers after truth. The book is an introduction as well to The Wisdom of the Overself, the second volume in this series about a recondite doctrine little known in Asia and completely unknown in the West. That the doctrine does produce a much desirable effect on the seeker is easily exemplified by the author as the reader may attest in comparing the author's previous works with these two volumes. Much of the author's previous efforts was spent in a direct and personal investigation of the mystic doctrines of the Orient. In this new phase of the work, the reader is asked to take one step beyond. As life on earth is not exactly heaven and is practically one step away from hell, taking a step in the direction of greater wisdom as the ancients advocate may actually be the best solution for human kind.

Disciplines/Steps Leading to the Ultimate Philosophy/Reality

"The Hidden Teaching Beyond Yoga..." is a precursor to Paul Brunton's book "The Wisdom of the Overself" which is an in depth study of Brunton's "Ultimate Philosophy". In this book, Brunton attempts to answer the age old questions, "What is the nature of "Reality" and the relationship of mind, body and the world". Brunton adeptly shows that we can never know the "outside" world which is outside our ideas and images in our awareness. We, in effect, make our own reality. This understanding of mind as the basis of experience is called "mentalism". In other words, Brunton is suggesting that there is no outside world outside our own consciousness and independent of it.
Brunton outlines the different paths or levels leading to what he describes as the "Ultimate Philosophy". These include the various paths of yoga, religion, mysticism and science. Each one of these paths cannot answer the age old questions of the nature of reality and its relationship to the world and man because each has its own specific short comings. For example, religion can only make a direct appeal to emotional faith whereas mysticism is limited to the emotional experience of the individual and science is limited to only things that can be measured. Notwithstanding the foregoing, these paths are tools and stepping stones to the "Ultimate Philosophy" that cannot be discarded.
From a personal standpoint, this book has answered many questions that I have had for many years that other books have failed to address and, I believe, will save any perspective reader much time in his study of philosophy, mysticism and other related areas. Although this is not an easy book, it also is not an impossible one beyond the scope of most readers. I would highly recommend it along with most books written by Paul Brunton.

About the Author
Sidney D. Kirkpatrick is an award-winning filmmaker and international best-selling author. His critically acclaimed non-fiction books include A Cast of Killers, Turning the Tide, and Edgar Cayce: An American Prophet (978-1573228961). Biographical profiles of Kirkpatrick have appeared in The New York Times, Time Magazine, and The New Yorker. He is a graduate of Hampshire College and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He lives with his wife Nancy, with whom he has often collaborated on ghost-written projects. Nancy Kirkpatrick is a writer, editor, and ghost writer. As a student of the Edgar Cayce readings since her teens, she has long sought to introduce the Cayce material to others and worked with the Cayce approach to help students and their families while administrator of a Waldorf School. In partnership with her husband, she worked for five years researching and writing the book Edgar Cayce: An American Prophet, before partnering again with Sidney on their latest title True Tales from the Edgar Cayce Archives.

Once again Sidney and Nancy Kirkpatrick have plumbed the life of Edgar Cayce and his psychic readings, and found new insights. "True Tales..." looks at the stories of individuals receiving readings and brings new life to a story that many may believe they were already (from previous biographies) familiar with.

From Faith Harding, the "Little Prophetess," who had psychic gifts rivaling Cayce's, to progressive politician Burton Wheeler, who might have prevented World War II, the challenges, pitfalls, and possibilities of psychic guidance are explored. The stories of these near misses, are countered by the stories of those whose lives were changed and enriched by their experiences with Cayce, and "the work."

To name a few covered in these tales, Mitchell Hastings, a pioneer in the development of FM radio, Eileen Garrett, the Irish psychic, who exchanged readings with Cayce, George Conjar, who as a young man was cured of tuberculosis, by following a regimen prescribed by his readings.
The story of the Cayces' own experiences from the young Edgars meetings with evangelist Dwight Moody to the challenging relationship and past life karma of Edgar, wife Gertrude, and secretary Gladys Davis, is covered with sensitivity and thoroughness.

The main "takeaways" for me from this book are 1) the importance of the people surrounding Cayce to the quality of his readings, cooperation, and shared vision and purpose were essential. many of the people mentioned in the book had struggled and fought in other lifetimes, and were now given the opportunity to work together for a higher purpose. Not all succeeded.

2) Related to the previous point: nothing is predetermined. In each experience we are given opportunities to grow--but we are not forced. It is up to us how we use those opportunities for weal or woe.

The Kirkpatricks have advanced the Cayce story from nostalgia to currency. I recommend it highly for all. New readers of the Cayce story should consider also reading one of the previously written biographies.

A joy that can't be adequately expressed

Of all the books I've read on the life of Edgar Cayce and all his glorious work this has been the most uplifting, insightful, and healing for me for all the people he helped. The sacrifices he made and his struggles within even with the Master of masters by his side. Tears fill my eyes thinking how favor is found in us all despite our shortcomings and there's always an opportunity to do good and wonderful things in the simplest of acts of love and kindness. Thank you to the Kirkpatrick's for writing this book. I feel blessed to have also met you at the 84th Annual ARE Conference, book signing, and luncheon with the Faith Harding.

I happened to come across this one and it is the perfect introductory and summary for those who don't know where ...

I know of Edgar Cayce but the amount of books written about him and by him were overwhelming and I didn't know where to begin, to get to know this man and his life's work. I happened to come across this one and it is the perfect introductory and summary for those who don't know where to begin. The writing was simple and concise, merging together a reading and its direct interpretation, and told as a narrative of his life. Powerful and inspiring, very well written, I completely recommend this book even to those that have read all the other books. This compilation is excellent and I know Cayce fans can never get enough of his work, this is a great addtition.

I love love loved this book! I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it straight through, cover to cover, and only took a break to sleep. The world the author creates is rich and imaginative, beautiful and terrible. This is definitely one I'll be rereading!

An Excellent Read

Hamilton combines a fascinating look at Paul's life and his shaping of early Christian teaching with detailed maps, timelines and a surprising number of photographs. It has always been hard for me to follow the journeys of Paul and to imagine where he taught and what the places were like - this helped tremendously. As always, this author brings each chapter to a close with a connection to our lives and faith today. It would be meaningful for people new to the Bible and is challenging enough for more seasoned readers.

Good overview of Paul, especially for book clubs and small groups.

First off, if you're looking for a complete understanding of Paul, his life and world, this book is too short for that. And a bunch of you are probably thinking "thank goodness for that".

If you're looking for a "popular" account, and especially if you want a great book to do a small-group study, you probably can't do better.

Hamilton fills his book with photos and stories to shed light on the man who some say founded Christianity. The book is a quick and easy read, but still gives enough depth and background to give the average Christian a firm grounding in who this man was and why he means so much to us today.

Highly recommended, especially if you can get a group to do it together.

Paul & Jesus; Paul & The Church

I always enjoy Pastor Hamilton's practical scholarship and his attention to contextualizing scripture into our own life and mission! The Call rollicks and frolics along with the energy and excitement of the NT book of Acts, and that's fitting, since a lot of the information we have about Saul (Jewish name) / Paul (Roman name) of Tarsus comes from the narrative in Luke's Acts.

Pastor Adam knows the texts extremely well; he's also getting to know the terrain and layout of the biblical Holy Land. As we journey with Paul and his companions, Hamilton observes what was going on in politics, in Jewish circles, in Christian hangouts, "among the" Greek and Roman gods and culture back at that time and suggests real-life present day applications for each of us in our churches and in the surrounding communities. The book places Paul's life, ministry, and letters in the times and places when and where he grew up, learned, taught, talked, and walked; this New Covenant of grace is not entirely different from the Old one, but it's about Trusting Jesus rather than Trusting Torah.

In the Protestant world in which many of us live (and move, and have our being), Paul is our most prominent theologian; we think we know him mostly for his Christology (on pages 72-74 we get a very shorthand version of the saving person and work of Jesus the Christ), yet in The Call Hamilton reminds us it is the work and reign of the Pentecostal Spirit of Life that inspired and enabled Paul /Saul; the Spirit of Life that raised Jesus from the dead in turn brings us to living faith in Jesus. As Martin Luther famously said in his Small Catechism: "I cannot by my own effort or understanding know Jesus my Lord or come to him, but the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith, just as the HS calls, gathers, enlightens and sanctifies the whole Church..." In his Acts of the Apostles the gospel-writer Luke brings us most of what we know about the chronology and events in Paul's life; in fact, the Spirit is prominent throughout Luke and Acts. (Pneumatology is the branch of theology that emphasizes the person and work of the HS.)

The six chapters of The Call describe God's call to the Apostle Paul along with a parallel call to each of us: 1.to Follow Christ; 2.to Go; 3.to Suffer; 4.to Love; 5.to Give, and 6.to be Faithful. Adam Hamilton includes a few anecdotes and incidents from his own life, mostly in ways that encourage us to discover similarities in our own. The hardbound book is a comfortable size to hold and heft, printed in easily readable type, and includes B&W maps and photographs. However, I seriously wish the book had been edited to omit and change at least most - if not all - of the too many sentences written in the passive voice.

About the Author

Binu Edathumparambil, MSFS, is a Catholic priest and psychotherapist who holds a doctorate in family therapy from Saint Louis University and an advanced training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy from St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute. A native of India, he brings an integration of the Eastern and Western thought into his clinical work and pastoral ministry. He currently lives in Manchester, Missouri.

A Fresh Look at Spirituality

A fine creative introduction to Christian spirituality. Thoroughly orthodox yet admirably global in respectful and helpful perspectives on other religions. Quite valuable for someone who appreciates relating the spiritual journey to one's psychological development. Uses excellent theological and scientific sources and applies them in an eminently readable manner.

A beautiful synthesis of the human experience

The Accent is a beautifully written book that spans many times and traditions. It provides a sociological, psychological, and spiritual perspective on the most important aspects of humanity. In striving to meet people in the mundane and the extraordinary, it provides the reader with a rich body of theory, research, and reflection for their own journey of life.
