About the Author
Wilhelmus à Brakel was born on January 2, 1635 in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. He studied theology at the universities in Franeker and Utrecht and was particularly influenced by his mentor, Gisbertus Voetius. He served four congregations in his native province of Friesland: Exmorra (1662-1665), Stavoren (1665-1670), Harlingen (1670-1673), and his birthplace, Friesland s capital, Leeuwarden (1673-1683). His Friesland period, however, proved to be a preparation for the great task the Lord had laid away for him in Rotterdam his final and longest pastorate (1683 1711). After a fruitful ministry of forty-nine years, it pleased the Lord to take this eminent divine affectionately referred to by the godly as Father Brakel home to Himself in 1711 at the age of seventy-six, to receive the reward of a faithful servant.

A master systematic theology

Wilhelmus systematic theology is pure gold. Theologians, pastors, laymen and all can benefit enormously of the quality of theological reflexion of a Brakel. Not only that, a Brakel combines pure theology with practical applications. You will find as Martyn Lloyd Jones said, "light and warm". This is theology on fire. The kindle edition is a work of art. You can navegate not only through the chapters but also to each particular section of every chapter. And also the editors wisely included the original page numbers making it excellent for study assignment.The price is high, but the question is how much are you willing to pay for one of the best systematic theology of all times with 3,000 pages? This edition has the complete 4 volumes.

Wilhelmus A Brakel was the flowering of 17th century Holland's 2nd Reformation, something akin to the Puritan revival in the British Isles. A Brakel is different than you might think for though he was a careful and as attentive to detail as any 'Reformed scholastic' he was also immensely practical, pastoral and experiential. He takes the reader by the hand and shows him/her the riches to be found in Christ and 18th century Reformed theology. He was a pastor, theologian, author and deeply engaged Christian. His praise is in all the churches!
